I've just asked my friend about it now as I'm on same job. He was in the UDR when this all happened after he'd served his time with the Green Howards....

The bomb story is definitely true, he had some sort of detector fitted at that time on his car. The same as the blokes outside waiting for him. And yes the blokes were out waiting for him and they will have known he had guns in his house so kicking the door in would be a bit risky.

So he had an ied detector fitted to his car ... this just gets better .....
I told him about you, he just laughed when I said you was over for 4 years....
Really ask him what he thought was funny ......
He asked me where abouts you were posted and what regiment?????
1RRW 2 1/2 years residential tour 6 month tour of Armagh and a 6 month tour of Fermanagh a few 3 and 4 month tours skipping back and fore over the water

No wonder you didn't see anything he said, he told me you'd be shitting in your pants in Crossmaglen....

He said you sound more like Johnny Bravo than Johnny Rambo....

Not very educated that old fella is he as anybody in the military knows that when you do a residential tour you cover ALL of NI including crossmaglen ... yhea I shit my pants there ... and in Bosnia and in Kosovo and in Iraq and in Afghanistan ... lucky I've got plenty of pants .......

I find this amusing ??

I mention a guy in a harrier getting colindered in Belfast (true story btw) no-one bats an eyelid. Some guy comes on with a story bout two 47's and a bomb in Belfast and gets crucified ????

I've been doing a lot of reading on the troubles and one thing I can agree with socks on, is that they didn't wait outside the gaff if they were going to slot someone. As for a bomb on the car roof well that's just plain silly. If they wanted him dead he would be and if they wanted him scared he wouldn't be fuucking living there ??

Ya mates chatting shite, no Irishman could hit a harrier with a bullet....

Well he has a huge scar from the .50cal (I believe it was) round that hit him, I guess it could've been a tourist ?

I wasn't saying you or he is lying I was saying I agree with socks's thinking as to why ;)

I've been working with him today so he's been telling me bits and bobs when I ask him. He doesn't go into deep detail giving me events in chronological order so I'm explaining the best I can. The major points are true that two men were waiting outside for him with guns and on another occasion there was an explosive attached underneath his car.
