  1. As i hide shoot a lot i find a range finder a very useful tool.I range the sitty tree once only and i know exactly my distance. Many a time when walking my GSP gun dog i take my range finder only and guess an objects distance then laze it. This practice has made me very good at predicting ranges, when walking with my rifle only. As Kenyon says,- a few test shots before settling down to wait, ensures your zero is correct and i must agree with Simon that you are losing your shot time and making movements with a rangefinder, ranging first before taking the shot.
  2. Hi Matty, good post. I am a "reformed" calibre air gunner from 22 for 40 years to 177 for 3 years and i own two HW 100`s one in .22 and one in .177, both, i`m sure most will agree, are "top, top, quality" rifles. The .177 is "never out of my hands", the .22 is constantly in the gun cabinets. So "why" ? Two spots only rule - heart / lungs and head shot - the shot placement (trajectory) of the 177 from a HW 100 is so precise it never fails to hit the money, period , and whatever calibre hits that money it is dead ! The .22 calibre is every bit as accu
  3. Excellent shot placement Toby. atb
  4. Shooting Mac. Is the rifle on the left yours ? atb
  5. The best night vision i`ve ever used , coupled with a good dvd and beer is snares Tshhht ! good luck Mac
  6. I had one when i was 11 yrs old - everything lived after i shot it with that bag of crap. My mate had a gat which was much better. atb
  7. Shooting ftm , Will they go into the pot ? atb
  8. What a great debate this is, and great points by all . The best and quickest way for me to describe my 40 + years as an air gun hunter on the calibre question is this- Heart / lung shot - .22 full power to the chest area through those tree branches, twigs, etc if the trajectory allows. .177 full power directly to the heart "only" through those tree branches, twigs, etc AS the trajectory allows Head shot - 22 full power to the "head area" through those tree branches, twigs, etc if the trajectory allows
  9. Ever try snaring Craig ? Can be much more rewarding than shooting atb
  10. Hi John, Great choice ! You will not be disappointed atb.
  11. Hi Z, I`ve shot most air rifles and calibres over the last 40 + years and i find that the HW 100 allows me to shoot just as well in both calibres . I have found that either calibre will do the job with ease if your shot placement is correct. (My) Preferred calibre is 177 and have found improvement in vermin /game bags taken. atb
  12. Now that is "old school" Mac but still a damn good school. Good luck mate.
  13. Hi guys, VM, Looking back to VM`s photo of the rabbits, look at the very evident , all important , "shot placement" - all headshot it seems, so my hat is off to your marksmanship VM . Back to 22 or 177 "does it matter ? - No ! Shot placement is so, so important. The only issue i have amongst air rifle calibers is trajectory through trees and branches, - i have never had an issue over accuracy between calibers. So for my humble 2 pence worth, 22, or 177 open ground, 177 through trees, branches or gaps etc, etc.
  14. Hi Mac, If it helps any - go to your permission during the day "without the rifle" but take a range finder with you and range your usual spots. After an hour or two of this mate you should have a good idea at night using a .177 (for me ) on your ranges. atb
  15. No Torchey rats learn very quickly indeed. When they see another rat trapped on the first attempt of trapping you wont get another. When they see a rat trapped after say two weeks of taking food from these traps without consequences they get caught in decent numbers before they realise. Then you go onto snaring them. atb
  16. Hi Dragon, One of the best ways of catching nervous rats was to bait the ordinary " snap trap" with peanut butter and leave the trap " UN- cocked" and allow the rats to feed off them until they become used to them. When the rats are used to them - set them cocked and ready. Snap traps are lethal. (Make sure you take your rifle with you to inspect your traps) Also have a look at rat snares and traps - top right of this page and type whip snares into the search engine, its all there mate. atb
  17. Hi H Lad, I would suggest the BSA Ultra by a "country mile" to you. Reg`d . The "dogs", you know what, "for me" is the HW 100 range pcp. - Simply untouchable. atb
  18. As much as possible i like to go out and create a natural hide, then leave the site to settle and grow back with occasional visits to keep on top of the "development". This type of hide is so, so effective.(and a wonderful learning of field craft). Once you have built/ developed your natural hides on your permissions, keep them in check and they will repay your efforts far more than the pop up hides. As i say "as much as possible" - pop up hides can be "very useful" too, - i use a jack pyke screen if i`m struggling for natural camo`. For me - your concealment
