That’s my CZ 527 in 223 with a Schmidt 6x42 sausage.

Cheers Ian , i thought they were a step up from the pulsar but I can’t see me upgrading just yet . I think when I do it will be to a thermal scope . A friend has one and I like that you don’t get “glare back “ from the ir if you are near foliage or something in front . I also think when you swap over from thermal spotter to digisight it can take a second or two to find your target, with thermal , it’s a lot easier. Anyway, I finished my jobs and I am having a couple of hours in the high seat , you never know when they will turn up !

Well , I scrapped my old . 243 . Variation sent off and Tikka T3 varmint stainless ordered . Take maybe two weeks and I should have it . All I’ve got to do now is make my mind up on what moderator to get .

I don’t doubt it , I’ve had buzzards that kill like goss hawks . Some are benign carrion eaters/ take a poorly poult . And others , well you’d think a fox had been in your pen , until you strip the skin and see it’s a B of P kill . I had the first kite turn up here last year , their range is spreading. They haven’t so far caused any problems.? -
No luck last night , I stayed there until 11.00pm and nothing showed. I will have a couple of hours there this afternoon. Then I’ve got a mate coming to sit in a high seat I’ve set up . That way he can cover one side and I can cover the other . Like they say I’ve only got to be lucky once , he has to keep on being lucky , but his luck will run out . I’ve had the Pulsar N970 digisight for a while , I think this is my third season using it , coupled with a thermal spotter, the set up works well . With a decent IR it gives you a great picture, also it works well without IR when there is just amb

Nice work Ianm . And an interesting read . That is a long one , bit like myself, long and lean . ? As I read this I’m waiting by one of my pens for a fox that has been showing up , our paths have crossed on more than one occasion, but I’ve not managed to get a shot off yet . It’s getting to that time when he might pop out . ?

None Hunting Clothing You Use In The Field?
shovel leaner replied to Bosun11's topic in Hunting Boots & Clothing
Yes I have , when the weather is dry and warm , I wear a pair of Nike trainers. Light , breathable, and comfortable and surprisingly hard wearing. This is this pairs second summer. Nike are the best trainers I’ve worn in the field . I also swear by Carharrt double front logger jeans in moss colour.... indestructible. -
The thing is with the Maxus , you can feed it with any shell and it recycles faultlessly, it is smooth shooting and parts are easily available if something should go wrong , although this is rare , something which can’t be said for cheaper guns .

Browning Maxus , all day long ?

Hi Sam , I was a keen wild Fowler for years . On the Severn estuary. My gun was exposed to saltwater and rain . There is no mystery or magic cure , just give your gun a good clean with any gun oil , I think I used WD40 a lot of the time . Don’t leave it in your slip , and it will be fine . Edited to say , don’t go taking grandads Holland and Holland either . ?

A keeper pal of mine has had fox problems overnight. He rears his own birds and is having to spend a lot of time catching in the mornings. He is feeling the pressure as he can’t devote the time needed to sort Charlie out . He reckons to have picked up 90 or so and that’s just the ones he found . He Wasaped me this picture this morning at 5.45 , I phoned him up and he sounded gutted . You need a shoulder to cry on sometimes, and only someone who has been there can understand that horrible feeling you get when you turn up in the morning and you see a couple of crows and a buzzard lift off the gr -

Got a few fine days forecast , rain coming Wednesday/Thursday maybe. The cover crops could do with a soaking , they are looking dry now . I always find it a bit nerve wracking putting the birds to wood , is there something nasty in the pen we missed when we ran the mutts through ? Am I going to have cubs spooking them over the fence and nabbing them ? Are Buzzards going to play havoc with them ? Is the weather going to change for the worse ? You name it , I worry about it ! ? But I wouldn’t want to do anything else , I must be mad !? -
I’m sure he was rude and ignorant and horrible to women and all of those things .. but he didn’t give a f@ck what anyone thought of him !!! He was his own person and a character, and I admire that . Too few English eccentrics around now . The media is now run by politically correct Homosexuals, and he didn’t fit in to what they wanted us to watch ... sad .

We had the first birds arrive on Tuesday, I didn’t take any photos or do a write up . But I took some today . The birds I got today are 6 weeks old they are common ring necks from overwintered hens . They all look good so far and well feathered . It’s been quiet around the first pen so far , but I don’t like to speak too soon . I’m on watch tonight as I’m sure there is a fox about , by this pen . The first birds I put to wood have settled in well and they have spread out well with no bunching up on the wire and a lot are getting up to roost on low branches. I get my birds clipped, I think it -
I do nearly all my shooting from a vehicle. I wouldn’t dream of shooting off hand . I’ve got quad sticks for when I have to go on foot . I still manage to miss them now and then . I’m not bad at shooting off hand and do take the odd squirrel or rabbit with my 22lr but I can’t risk missing foxes and try to maximise my success with taking the greatest care to ensure a successful shot . Fair play to you though , that’s impressive .

Thanks for the feedback . The shoot I work on is very undulating with lots of bushes and hedges and brambles. The opportunities I get on foxes are fleeting and very often you haven’t got long before they disappear. It seems the more effective I am with Thermal and night vision , the foxes I’ve got left are “super sharp” and alert to your presence and anything they see as danger . I also find that I am now wanting to take my shooting up a gear and am taking more of an interest in rifles and reloading. I have in The past just used them as a tool , got it out of the cabinet, shot foxes and put i

Thanks sausage, that rules that out . So for a lighter bullet I would be better off with a 1:10 . I bet I end up with another Tikka . ?

I’ve been looking on Guntrader I’ve been looking at an RPA interceptor and it’s a 1:8 . I know a lot of .243 shoot 1:10 , I fancy the RPA and just wondered the logic of a 1:8 twist? What bullet weight does that twist stabilise? I’ve no doubt it’s a good accurate rifle . I want to shoot as far and as flat as I can without having to dial in . In my experience and on this ground , I won’t have time to take windage or check distance too often .

Wow. That's a lot of foxes.

That is a lot off 200acres , having said that the chicken farm I visit is only a 60 acre site and I reckon I’ve been going there for the last 8 years and I’ve shot about 40 a year . They just keep on turning up . I only really need to control them in the summer. Free range is a bit of a misnomer, they are only free range when the weather is good , if they get bad weather “most of the time “ they don’t let them out . The farm is very close to a large housing development and industrial units , and as far as I know nobody else is shooting around that area .The best I’ve done there is 7 over two n -
Hi all , I’m looking for a new .243 . My intention is to try and develop a load that will let me shoot light bullets at longer ranges than I do now . I know there are better rounds out there for long range shooting but I’ve got the .243 on my ticket and I can’t be arsed to change it . I’m looking at a custom job with a 1:8 twist . What are your opinions on this . All feedback is greatly appreciated. I am not much of one for reading data and experimenting.

I’ve got something similar by D E Homden . I sent off for them from the countryman’s weekly in the 80’s . My Mrs hates them ....

Always nice to get a bit of permission with a problem like that . I seem to be on top of the areas I look after and am now waiting for for silage and the wheat harvest. Having said that they cut some fields for hay at a chicken farm and I was rubbing my hands together, thinking I would shoot two or three and only saw one , which i couldn’t get a safe shot on . Went back the next night and changed where I was waiting and shot it . That’s another couple of trays of eggs. -
I call them “having a wild one “. And I’m afraid it’s a regular occurrence for yours truly. I’m a creature of habit and when I get up in the morning it’s the first thing I attend to . But at this time of year I’m out at 5.0am checking my birds, well I don’t want one before I leave ....too early. But very often, before I finish my checking the pens and before I can make it back to “civilisation “ , it’s “touching cloth” , the “tortoise is sticking his head out of the shell” .. you get the idea . Well this once I got all hot and bothered and had to have a “wild one “ , I found a fallen tree that
