First few weeks in the pen
shovel leaner replied to topdraw2006's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Unless your pen is netted on top , even if they are clipped some will get out . How will they get back in ? Unless you regularly walk them back in through your gate . I always have mine open. Listen to your boss , he sounds like he knows what he’s talking about . Trouble with some young keepers.... they start thinking !!!! Don’t do it , it’s a dangerous path , listen to the boss , do “exactly” what he says and you will go far in the job . Good luck , don’t mean to sound sarcastic , hope you have a good season. ATB -
I have heard that they have improved. They had to ! The ones I remember trying didn’t kill well at all, duck are hard enough to kill with lead , let alone steel .
-
With a combined population of nearly 400 million people. They are the ones we have leading us ? Still I rather them than Hilary Clinton and Jeremy Corbyn .
-
The whole nontoxic thing is perverse. There is no science or credible reason to have banned lead in the first place . Our representative body (BASC) rolled over and did nothing to help us keep lead . At the time of the ban I was a member of my local wildflowers and I tried all alternatives. Nothing kills like lead , but Tungsten is the best IMO . Maybe steel shot a has improved in the years since but I won’t use it now .

For the amount you are likely to use doing a bit of rough shooting I would have just got a box of bismuth or tungsten matrix. Better performance and will not damage your gun . But too late now . ?? I don’t rate steel, it’s ok as long as you don’t stretch the range too much , but I’ve found tungsten and bismuth really good alternatives to lead .

Well done FD , he certainly did have a problem. Bet the farmer was happy. If he’s anything like the guy who has an free range egg farm I shoot on he will be pissed off . I shot 7 over a couple of nights and he moaned that he had to pay to get the bodies taken away , and could I take them away . No pleasing some people. ?

I’d like to see some pine nut crunching vegan anti try and sneak up on me and mince me up . I’m not a tough talking macho man , but it would never happen, and for that reason sausage...... “I’m out “. -

Like Stavross said Sako are a decent factory load . I always swore by them . But factory ammo is expensive and not as good as home loads. The initial expenditure on all the kit is a lot , and it will probably take me years to reap any financial benefit. I got second hand bits and bobs off eBay . RCBS is a good name to look out for . I watched a load of videos on YouTube and went over to a friends house and went through the process on his kit as well . It’s not the dark art some would have you believe, it’s actually easy , and if I can do it , anybody can do it . I have had excellent results, w

I wasn’t sure what the thread was . All I knew was that my old mod wouldn’t fit it . I’m getting it sent via the RFD service to a gunsmith friend. I’m just going to get the supplier to send it with one that suits it , I’m going for the Atec .

I’m getting a Tikka T3 varmint stainless in .243 and also a moderator. I disposed of my old rifle and Sound mod with a RFD and asked for space to buy new . It was basically like for like . I was a bit annoyed really because my moderator was a pes T10 and relatively new . But it’s the wrong thread for a varmint , which I believe is 14mm the old was 12mm .

I applied for a variation on my firearms certificate. I sent the application along with my cert on Monday morning recorded delivery, just first class with a signature not the guarantee next day that costs £6 just the £1.90 job . Wednesday morning it’s back . Well done Gloucestershire firearms department. ?

Lobster and crab feast!!
shovel leaner replied to The Fishlocker's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Absolutely fantastic!! You are living the dream. Keep up the videos, at least land lubbers like me can experience your kind of life vicariously , if not in reality. Watching them only makes me more determined to retire and get a boat .....and hopefully not end up a drowning/ lost at sea statistic. ? -
I’ve had working bred cockers and springers in the past and to be honest they do your nut in around the house . I always kept mine in the house / kitchen as pups to socialise them and house train them ( they stay clean in the kennels then ) . But I like a dog that is more relaxed when it’s in the house . Cockers , at least the ones I’ve owned want to be in your pocket , by that I mean they are constantly following you around , and when you look at them they are there “staring at you “ . It’s like having a really needy bird , great for a bit ..... then you want to dump them !!!

The spacers or shims will help if it’s too much or too little rib you are seeing, other than that get browning Maxus stock spacer for not much money on eBay , they come in various lengths . ATB -

I’m not sure about this on that model , but I believe that spacers can be fitted between the action and the stock to increase the length . Other than that a competent gunsmith can do you a butt extension . I really hate those rubber jobs they tend to catch on your clothing. I am 6.2” and sometimes have this problem but I find I can shoot most standard stock lengths . -

Seems a shame to put that ugly rubber thing on the butt . Is it too short in the stock ? -
Sauer barrels and Mauser are made I believe in the same place as Blaser barrels . I can only go on what I’ve seen , and experienced . A mates under keeper has not long ago got a Sauer 100 keeper package in 223 , it was cloverleafing at 100 meters straight out of the box . Ianm brought up some very good points about the Sako which I didn’t know . I would have said that the counter jockey who was selling the Sako would say that it was better because it is more expensive and better finished , but not more accurate than the Tikka . I don’t know anyone who has had a Sako and or a Tikka and not got

Nice one Stavross . Before I was keepering . I Had a plastering / outside rendering business and have worked for myself for years . But ultimately your customers are your “boss” while you work for them . Its only happened to me twice but I literally have left jobs before I’ve even got the tools out of the van . One customer didn’t want her flower beds ruined, that were next to her house , “we had to hack off the old render and re- render” what did she think was going to happen? Another guy when I arrived with the team to start work on his house appeared at the door in a high vis vest hard hat

This is how it played out last night . After checking the pens and walking the last of the poults in and waiting for them to settle , I drove to where we had seen the fox and mistakenly thought it was a deer . I set up the fox caller and tucked myself up next to the empty holiday let , just inside the barn . I figured I would stand out less by the building , also the breeze was in my favour. I put the caller on to field mouse for a bit and then on to pheasant distress, I thought , “ yes you b@stard , you know that sound “. I was getting fed up and made a deal with myself to give it till 11.00
