  1. Dr. M. Dawson,Paleontologist ♀ 1977, June 28 Prey-testing agonistic charge Ellesmere Island,Nunavut, Canada Doing field work when they were approached by a pack of six wolves. They tried to drive them off by shouting, waving, and throwing clods of frozen dirt. The wolves were not deterred, and began to circle. The lead wolf leaped at Dawson's face, but Dawson pushed back with her arms and leaned backwards, pushing the wolf to the ground before it could bite her, and the wolves departed, but the strike was close enough for saliva from the wolf's flews to be

  3. consider two points, both of which i have touched upon. first, are the prey species running to very low numbers, thus causing the wolves to explore different food sources? secondly, have the wolves been food- habituated to humans, in other words have they been finding human-related food supplies such as livestock or garbage dumps or pets, which cause them to associate humans with food?
  4. when wolves find the wild game running outor excessive numbers of livestock (usually due to humans growing in number) they start on the sheep, then the cattle and horses, then the garbage dumps, then the pet dogs and cats then the big strong dogs then the people. these steps are well documented, read "wolves in russia" or any of hundreds of accounts of wolf predation on humans in india in recent tines. so wolves which are hunting livestock and get chased by guardian dogs are going to act VERY DIFFERENT when they are hunting the guardian dogs................................... wolves have n
  5. yes, captive well fed wolves, with no motivation to eat people, and if those wolves have been taught from a young age that humans with brooms are best avoided. you won't keep a determined wolf away with a brush if it has decided to eat you. http://graywolfnews.com/pdf/dr_valarius_geist_re_carnegie.pdf this should be required reading by anyone with an interest in wild wolves. wolves only fear people when they have been hunted, essentially.

  10. yep, one of the other herds shoot will be about 20% more than this group, i am expecting 40kg+ from prickets, and as you say they get on the crops. i have found that those on winter rape in particular tend to do very well, same with chinese water deer
  11. very nice. what weight are you averaging for prickets? the prickets i have been culling for the past month are around 35kg, whilst the 2 year olds are about 45kg. these are in one of the herds i manage, i havent started on the others yet

  14. i wanted to be a vet, and up to the age of 16 i was heading in the right direction, got straight A's at o level and started doing well at a levels. then we ran into some serious trouble at home and i had to leave school and earn some money to help out the family. worked as a labourer for a few years on various sites, then did a variety of different jobs before i ended up managing livestock on an estate, which i have been doing for some years now. great job but no money in it. i would love to do something like cabinet making, or thatching, a real craft along those lines.
  15. my brother in law is a stone mason, earns very good money and is crying out for apprentices. stick at it, two or three years sounds like forever when you are 18 but bekieve me it is no time at all, you can be earning a decent wedge by the time you are in your mid 20s. just get ssome certificates whilst you are working on day release or such good luck
  16. yeah he was a bit "special" wasnt he
  17. reckon mcmalky might be a good guess

  22. Francis you have my best wishes for your mother, it's sad that people have Togo through this stuff. Icahn understand how committed Christians like yourself can be torn between your beliefs and your emotions We watched my grandmother fade Way with cancer, absolutely horrendous, and other family members, and after Anna's passing my mother said to me, if I ever get like that will you help me to go? I told her I would, and I meant it. If she or anybody else I know should ever be in the situation where they are really suffering and have had enough, then I will help them if they want me to.
  23. That's an interesting link, thanks for putting it up. I will be £ per year better off apparently !!
  24. Pesky, yes it did happen, I don't appreciate being called a liar thank you. Why would I make up something like that ? BGD what would be the point of starting a row with a group of blokes, are you that tough that you would take them on, because I am not. And I certainly would not rely on strangers to get involved to help me out, that is a ridiculous statement. Oh, and do you think that would be a good example to show my four year old? Whatever I think of the respect issue, my kids are a lot more important. I wouldn't say I was bitching about it, just telling people about an incident which u
  25. Make sure his diet is right as has been said calcium and vitamin D and give him another 6 months of growing he is still a baby. cow hocks aren't that much of a problem, I think throug may lack a little initial acceleration as a result, but the best all round hunting dog I ever saw was cow hocked and it didn't affect her.
