Let My Inexperience Be A Warning To Others.
planete replied to Justin Glover's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Working dog plus rescue dog, maybe straight out of pound equals slightly bonkers dog. That is normal I am afraid and to be expected. I have had quite a few rescue fosters like that. The solution is giving them a routine to settle them, having the time to watch them when they are awake and active to make sure they do not indulge in unwanted behaviours and plenty of fun activities to bond with them and give them an outlet. It can be totally exhausting for the first few weeks and I always crate train them carefully so that I can keep them and the house safe while I have a break from the mayhem -
Hi Kate. Have you looked at the Lurcher and Racing Club or the Sussex Longdogs sites? I reckon you might more easily make the kind of contacts you are looking for there. ATB.

Loved your posts. Glad you are back.

Beautiful picture.

I think this is probably true for the relationship with some competition horses but my experience with my horses is different. I have only ever had one at a time, bought them as youngsters, did all he training myself and ended up with horses I could trust with my life. Not one of them ever left me if I came off, or tried to get me off. I would go so far as to say they looked after me on occasion. I even went camping, shopping and to work with them and they never let me down.

Love her. I hope you have some great times with her.

I feel uncomfortable just looking at her! Good luck.

In the worst scenario, an operation by a top (as in specialist at vet hospital) vet will give a very good chance of recovery for a long life as a pet. I hope you have insurance if this is needed though. For lesser injuries the outlook is brighter. All the best today, I hope you have good news.
-
Where is this? It looks cruel, pointless and downright moronic!
-
She may need anti-inflammatories. Only the vet can give you that. I hope it is nothing serious and she mends quickly.

Don' t let him drink from any puddles (risk of leptospirosis).

I am not a muslim. I am also fully aware that this man would very likely not have dared approach an unknown man in the street and asked him such a question. As a woman I find this despicable and I would have told him so in no uncertain terms. As a five foot midget of a certain age I am not about to start a bout of fisticuffs. I agree that arresting him is plain daft though. It is giving him far too much importance.
-
The man is a cowardly imbecile and he is lucky he did not approach somebody like me but a reasonable woman with good self-control (yes, I know what that is saying about me, Lol!) Freedom of speech is way over-rated and is responsible for a lot of abuse. There are quite a few people for whom freedom of speech is a license to harm others.

There is obviously more to the man than the lipstick and nail varnish. Respect from me even if I find him odd.

Liver ok. Onions not ok, they can cause hemolytic anemia in dogs if eaten regularly. Probably safe enough to have a bit once in a blue moon.

I have now switched from antlers to buffalo horns for the dogs to chew on. They do not seem to develop sharp edges or splinter up.

If you take on a really skinny dog, it is best to feed him little and often. Four times a day for an adult. And make sure it has been properly wormed for roundworms AND tapeworm (not with Bob Martins stuff).

If you see any suspect lesions on legs, belly or even in mouth/tongue, get the vet to check kidney function ASAP as the dogs who survive seem to be the ones diagnosed early. Having said that, most lesions are caused by something else. I am in the New Forest where we have had quite a few cases now, so I am on the lookout for any signs of the dogs spending time licking themselves repeatedly in the same place as well as checking them. Anderson Moores vets are doing the research and have information on their website.

I have taken on two rescue lurchers after spending some time fostering pound dogs for a rescue and I really wish there were no lurchers around that need to be rescued. I am too old and decrepit to work the dogs so I spend a hell of a lot of time trying to keep them happy! And I believe they are. They are fit and very switched on, they race each other like loons, play hard and are very civilised around the house. The main problems do not come from the dogs' instinct but from the crap starts they have had. They were not socialised (one was a fear biter when I got her and had already bitten

Also keep the dog warm. They burn fat keeping warm this time of year. You can add some sardines in oil ( not in brine, salt is not good for dogs) to the diet and any fatty meat. If you are feeding dry food, make sure the oil content is quite high, at least 15% or more.

Put her on Doglost. Print the posters and put them EVERYWHERE. Make her too to to handle. Usually this results in the animal being dumped and found. I really hope you get her back.

As we have four dogs, I find it cheaper to pay for vet's prescriptions and buy it over the internet. I get a year' s supply at a time.

I rarely bother to disagree with anybody but I have to put in a word of warning about the woman' s "cures". I read the book years ago and tried some of her remedies but soon gave up. It is no substitute for proper vet care. It is full of"somebody said" and old wives' tales which she repeats without any hard evidence. Sure some of the old remedies are useful and I will use herbal medicine for some minor ailments but her book went to a charity shop I am afraid.
