  1. I forgot to get a free ticket a few weeks ago when I nipped to the shops. I wrote to the address given on the ticket admitting I had simply forgotten and enclosing the bills for my purchases. I apologised and hoped they would let me off. They did! Good luck, it is worth trying.
  2. Did you forget the cream cake? Shame! Lovely as usual. What a great little bitch.
  3. Now we know why you have such a great little bitch. I think I will try giving mine some cream cakes as well!
  4. Agree totally with bosun and desert bred. You can also hide from a too independent young dog so he thinks he has lost you when he returns, it usually makes them keener to keep tabs on you and means you do not need to call them as much. Providing of course you have a really good bond with the dog and you have made him believe the best place in the world to be is with you.
  5. You could tell them you will give them the normal excess an owner has to pay if an insured animal needs treatment. My excess is around £75.00. And mention it is usual to have insurance particularly for "valuable" animals. They took the risk of not having insurance which is not your fault. But I would also ask them first which vet treated the cat and check the cat was really given treatment.
  6. I did manage to teach a four year old greyhound bitch just out of training to be friends with the old cat we had at the time but I would not try it again. I had to muzzle the bitch in the house for the first week and the penny only dropped the day I managed to grab her as she went flying by me behind the cat in the entrance hall. She got told off in no uncertain terms and I still recall the astonished look she gave me at the time but she got the point and never chased the cat again. They ended up sleeping together while we were out at work. Outside the house she was still a fiend if she sa
  7. Yes. I always fasten the line to a padded harness plus a shock absorbing lead extension if the dog is not a puppy. I find them mainly useful for the older dogs who have had no training and are old enough to be self-confident and leg it. Pups usually are only too happy to stick close and soon learn to come for a treat or a game without the faff of a long line (it is a royal pain to handle).
  8. Safer to attach a long line to a harness, you can also put a shock absorbing lead extension between the harness and the line http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EZYDOG-MONGREL-LEAD-EXTENSION-24-61cm-FREE-POSTAGE-VARIOUS-COLOURS-shock-absorb-/360542407459
  9. I think there is a chap advertises fox and rabbit control in the Lymington Times. Might be worth getting in touch. Look in the Livestock column.
  10. Having had different breeds of dogs, I have found that some seem to thrive on just meat, others on mainly carbohydrates (dry complete is mainly carbs really), yet others on a mixture of both. Perhaps not all breeds of dogs are equally well-adapted to a diet rich in carbs or to one of meat only? Different dogs have very different metabolic rates which might mean they thrive on different diets? Also a breed with a prevalence of fast-twitch muscle fibres might need a different diet from a dog with mostly slow-twitch muscle fibres? Feel free to shoot me down if I am talking rubbish!
  11. If I wanted to get an adult dog nowadays I would only buy a microchipped one and I would check the chip is registered to the guy selling the dog. I would be too worried about buying a possibly stolen dog. Not saying this is the case here. Just my suspicious nature.
  12. All good advice. On top of that try and drive as if you were carrying a crate of eggs for a bit. The back of a van and of some cars can give a very rough ride. My dog went through a bad patch when he was scared of getting in the car. We have now taught ourselves not to pull away or brake sharply and to corner without letting the car pull to the outside. No more problems but it was some time before the dog relaxed.
  13. Fantastic collection of pictures. Thanks for sharing.
  14. I think some collies are sensitive but not all of them. Something to do with their particular genetic make-up: Ivermectin toxicity in Collies The phenomenon of ivermectin toxicity in Collies was first described in 1983. Ivermectin causes neurologic toxicity in some, but not all Collies, at doses that are 1/200th of the dose required to cause toxicity in other dogs. Neurologic manifestations of ivermectin in susceptible dogs include, hypersalivation, ataxia, blindness, coma, respiratory compromise, and death. A test is now available for drug sensitivity. Despite numerous investigat
  15. I have a bad shoulder (not as bad as you but I am only a titch as well). I wear a strong leather belt and put the dogs leads through that. Just do not let them pull you over. All the best for a speedy recovery.
  16. Karen. If you want to breed pets, please forget it. There are literally thousands of 'pets' in rescues and being put down all the time. The odds are your pups will not find a home and/or will end up like that. You might find two or three friends or relatives to take one but your bitch might have up to twelve pups. Also, rearing a litter properly can be extremely expensive, that is without vet expenses if something goes wrong with your bitch at any point. If you want to breed workers, serious dog men will not even come and see your pups because the only bitches worth breeding from have a
  17. Essex Poultry http://www.theyloveit.co.uk/ deliver in the south, chicken only but good quality.
  18. I have had success with wounds that would not heal using manuka honey (rating 15+). My vet was happy for me to use it, worth mentioning it to the dog's vet?
  19. Put her on Doglost. The site will enable you to make posters as well. Hope you find her safe and sound.
  20. It could be a symptom of hypothyroidism. Very easily corrected with thyroxin tablets after test by vet, my Border terrier suffered from it all his life. I hope you can get it sorted easily whatever is causing it.
  21. Thanks. Googled him and found him on several websites. All comments very complimentary about him as well. I was also recommended Daniel Doherty but he is a vet and I do not think she needs a vet as it is probably an old injury that has left her using herself not quite right.
  22. Thanks Davey. Will give him a ring after the week-end.
