  1. Hubby just said you can eat the roots if you are starving. (he should know he is a botanist!)
  2. Can anybody recommend a good bone person near Southampton? My new bitch paces at times and throws a hind leg out. She is a rescue and was doing it when I got her. The vet does not think it is important as she is not going lame but she is not building up muscle in the right places (lots on the loins, nothing much between hip and stifle) and I am worried she will get arthritis when still young if not sorted out.
  3. I have added one thing to my first aid kit this year: Piriton tablets, Chlorphenamine malleate, not the hayfever ones. The terrier got bitten by a snake earlier in the year and even though rushed to the vet straight away nearly did not make it. A couple of Piriton tablets administered straightaway for a medium sized lurcher would definitely help according to the vet. But be prepared to carry or drag the dog back to the car on a coat or similar.
  4. I use NAF Off Extra on the horses ears. I rub some of the cream on the inside of the ears morning and night.
  5. Just find a responsible person who does not have kids, will not tie him outside shops, will put him in a different room or in a crate or a kennel if kids visit and will muzzle him if walking where kids may be. Not difficult, just needs somebody who uses his/her brain to think about the problem and act accordingly. Lots of dogs are uncertain and nervy around kids, some have even been teased beyond endurance by them. Some very well-trained working collies will not tolerate close contact with free range kids or will nip them same as they do sheep if they think they need sorting out. As for ad
  6. I just paid £10.50 for a vet prescription for six months worth of Prac-tic for a bitch who is allergic to tick bites. Saved about £10.00 buying from Viovet.
  7. Love your pics but that last one is going to give me nightmares . Nothing to show it is not six foot high!
  8. Wonderful to see her looking so happy after what she has been through. I guess she can be forgiven a bit of over enthusiasm!
  9. The dogs are a credit to you, but I am seriously in awe of your lawn. How do you manage it? Mine has all but disappeared!
  10. Exactly what I have now (and I would have to be a bit younger too!)
  11. Because adopters are told if things do not work out, Lurcher Link wants the dogs back. The dogs are microchipped and registered to the charity and remain their property throughout their lives. I know it is not foolproof but it is better than most. Also as a fosterer I like to check up on my adopted dogs from time to time. You do not have to take my word for it. Go on their site and read up on what they do and how they do it, talk to them, then make up your mind.
  12. I foster rescue lurchers. It is no more difficult to house train an older dog than it is a pup. You just need to be able to watch the dog or crate him when you can't. As to putting him down because he is not ferret broke or cat broke, any decent pet home with previous experience of lurchers will take that in their stride and take the necessary precautions to avoid accidents. Try getting in touch with Lurcher Link. They are sympathetic to working lurchers and their owners unlike many others. And they own the dog for the rest of his life so he will be assured of a decent forever home no m
  13. My terrier who is fed on dry food will eat other dogs' stools if they are fed raw meat.
  14. Bumping this up. Saw two of your posters today, I hope he is spotted soon.
  15. I live near Totton and walk the dogs in the Forest every day. Will keep an eye out for him, hope you get him back soon.
  16. This b..d rain is giving me an expensive Christmas. My fields are under water and I am having to move my two horses into full livery stables after lunch as impossible to find grass livery with this weather. Ouch!
  17. If Dylan starts walking slowly with his nose up into the wind, it is time to pop him back on the lead pronto, otherwise he'll be running up into the wind towards deer in the next few seconds even if they are nowhere in sight. He used to stop and point when he was younger but he now seems to think that is a waste of time! On the other hand, if the wind is blowing towards a group of deer in full sight and they do not move he will be easy to call to heel.
  18. RFY, I do not know the rights and wrongs of your complaint but I love your writing style, wonderful!
  19. Thanks, Paulus. Mind you, I have just found out that as a 'senior citizen' I only pay £22 anyway ! But did not know about any of it before this thread so very useful.
  20. I am not sure how much of the stomach's contents get eaten if any, ( <http://jn.nutrition....36/7/1923S.full > ) From my own experience I would say that the biggest value of the vegetable matter we add to a raw diet may well be in replacing the roughage (hair, hide or small feathers) the wolf would swallow with the meat.
  21. I have this funny idea in my head that a dog living wild would be more likely to find and eat fruit than vegetables. After all raspberries, strawberries and blackberries grow wild and are pretty palatable to dogs (mine love them, even bananas!), but vegetables as we know them would not exist in the wild? My ideal dog diet would be meat, bone and some fruit. Or am I barking?
