My Saluki x lurcher stalks to get as close as possible before rushing at his target. He has never seen another dog doing it, just started doing it at around 11 months. He even does it to other dogs when he is trying to get them to run. He will also try to round up stray family members if one of us is going out and I know there is no coliie at all in him, I think he figures the whole family should go out hunting together! Sorry, forgot to say that's a great looking pup!

The reputable rescue centres neuter the dogs before rehoming them. -
when you see them eating something.................

Try going blackberry picking with one pony, two goats and a GSD as I did many years ago. the competition was too fierce, I gave up! -
I would be a bit worried such a light colour would get stained easily. Would quite fancy it though as a smart collar and lead set on a dark coloured dog.

I love some of your replies! I am now trying to work out what I would do. Choking and grabbing the hind legs sounds like the way to go. And I like the idea of the Bite Back spray. Does anybody know if it will work when the dogs have already started fighting or is it just a deterrent?

I paid with Paypal, I will try and get my money back if I get nowhere soon. Thanks for the info.

I have just been reading the thread where a staffie attacked a spaniel in a pub. Several posters wrote the attack could have been stopped quicker and more efficiently than by putting a foot on his neck. Ok, how? This is a serious question. How do I stop a dog attack on one of my dogs quickly without being torn to shreds? I am often out and about alone with my dogs and would really like to know what to do, just in case. The terrier would definitely try to give as good as he gets but would not be a match for a large dog, and the lurcher has not got an aggressive thought in his head for

I unfortunately did not come across this until I did a search on the firm! My order has not turned up of course. Any updates on the chap? His website is still taking money for orders but no goods so far and no reply to emails.

I used to work cattle with a collie. Dogs who work cattle need to be brave enough to make them back off when the cattle turn on them as some always do. My collie used to first go for the space between the horns, if that failed he would also go for the nose. If the dog does not prove he is the boss, then he will come off worst and is useless for the work. Great photos and brave dog you have there Moll. Love your posts. ATB.

I would like to know as well as I tried feeding a still warm road kill pheasant to my dog who eats raw chicken only to have him act as if I was trying to poison him! I had drawn it and mostly plucked it too. Next time it goes in my pot.

if it works for foxhounds
planete replied to Coyotehunter's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
I used to help exercise a pack of basset hounds and I agree that when taking a pack out coupling makes a lot of sense. But for me coupling a whippet to anything else would take all the pleasure out of having a dog who can run like the wind and should love his training if done well. Safety wise if you decide to go on using couples on your dogs at least buy them wide collars to try and spread the strain on their necks. -
It is good quality stuff but my fussy pup refused to eat it. But then he was refusing to eat just about everything at that time and I was hoping expensive mush would tempt him. I am glad it did not. He would be a very expensive dog to keep as he is now getting through a minimum of 800gr. of raw meat a day!

All the best with your dog. Glad he is on the mend.

Is there any way of teaching a dog to be safe around barbed wire? If it is possible I would be grateful for any tips. I really hate the stuff and it seems to be buried inside every hedgerow. Perhaps somebody should devise ballistic nylon waistcoats for working dogs!

Dave, I am not trying to kill my pup's prey drive even if it was possible (which I do not believe it is with him anyway). I like him with it. He is welcome to all the squirrels and rabbits he can get as long as he realises he will never get away with doing something I do not want him to do. I got him well used to my horses and all the stock on the Forest as a pup. When his prey drive kicked in, the first I knew of it was when he suddenly rushed a grazing pony in front of us on the heath. He got called back (and broke the chase and came back staightaway) but that's when he went on the t

I walk my nine months old Saluki cross on the New Forest. Lots of stock and game about (deer). I have been using various ways to reinforce recall as he is not interested in food rewards when outside. I have got him very keen to retrieve a tennis ball which is always in my pocket. When off lead which is most of the time, if he so much as looks at anything, even walks towards anything on four legs I give the command "leave!" and immediately throw the ball away from whatever he was looking at. He now looks for the ball the second I say it. When the prey drive first kicked in he spent two w

My question was prompted by an incident the other day when we were in woodland and somebody was blasting away somewhere on a whistle. Dylan went crazy quartering the bushes around us. I assumed he was looking for the funny sounding wounded animal. Thankfully he did not leave me, just looked like a very confused pup. It got me thinking that he might have gone to the whistle if I had trained him to respond to one. Unfortunately lurchers have been picked up and taken away around here when found by the wrong people. I would like to train him to a whistle but only if the benefits outweigh the

Thanks for the reply, Oscarsdad.

Pics, pretty please?

Probably a silly question but could a dog trained to recall with a whistle respond one day to a whistle of the same frequency blown by a stranger? Has anybody known it to happen? I exercise my pup in the New Forest and would rather not have him confused by a whistle happy dog walker one day!

Hello to all, I guess I have just had a late middle age crisis (not telling you how old I really am!) and bought a four months old lurcher three weeks ago. My experience of lurcher pups is nil so I started doing some reading up, loved this forum and have just joined. My new boy is a greyhound/saluki cross whippet, very bright, very active and straight out of the breeder's kennel. You can imagine what the last three weeks have been like but there is progress. He is now housetrained, sits and lies down on command, walks on the lead and has some recall. But the garden has become a mix of q
