People talk of adding this and adding that as though breeding good dogs is like baking a cake...If only it was that simple. This is how men get lost over the years trying diffrent ingredients by diffrent breeds, and talking about fractions instead of traits. The worst idea in the world imo is to get a dog and then start thinking what to put in it to wake it up or put fire in it.

do these shine as far as a blazerlite from cluson?

A proper dog in some of our opinions is a native breed bred one that can catch native hares, you lot just cheat and it ain't impressive to some of us .............. I've said this before. Lamping a hare with my local bred lurcher X lurcher bunny dogs is considered unsporting by the day walkers. But it's okay to import a £5000 purpose bred saluki and kill them in the day with said dog and that's not cheating. The mind boggles. But each to their own. You dont know what you are talking about mate.

I dont understand what you mean by take her out of season. Do you mean he gave her a suppressant to stop her coming in?

very nice mate

i think major topham put that on snowballs grave. he won every course he ever ran in,and all my dogs trace back to him. honest

A dog has genrally got more drive and can give an inch more when needed. A lot find bitches less independent so it takes a bit more confidence on the part of the handler to work dogs. I like both sexes but if I could only keep one its a dog every time.

Is this supposed to be some kind of stealth advert....cus it would take a lot more than that to get me to buy it after that bleeding lamping book that cost me £3o odd. Ive tried to swap it for a copy of Penny Taylors Running dog maintenance but no takers...

Thats hybrid vigour you can get a superman type machine that wont breed true again without breeding in and in. There is still good blood about but its getting rarer.

Some dogs are marathon but dont seem in much of a hurry to catch. Size doesnt say much about the greyhounds type has already said. Some of the coursing dogs are massive but bred for straight pace. Back in time open coursing dogs were much smaller though and could weigh half that of modern dogs. I think I would be concerned more about soundness than speed. All greyhounds are fast.

dogs are/were bred for tools to be used for our benefit. They are dangerous when used in the wrong place by people who shouldnt have them in the first place. And then we blame the tools.
-
Or they like racey type Lurchers?? Hes already got a 3/4 whippet ,they dont come much racier.

I always cook the veg,ie leeks or cabbage mostly. I dont think you loose all the vitamins unless you cook too long. The only veg that doesnt seem to digest is carrots. Veg keeps bowls moving aswell. In summer I put nettle tops in aswell.

People usually cross to radically diffrent types like going back to greyhound when they are unsatisfied with the dog they have. If you are happy with the dog you have why would you not want to reproduce it again, and if you are not happy with it why breed from it?
-
If you are happy with the type then why not look for a similar type? If you start putting saluki or collie blood in you are likely to change the type altogether. Dont gamble or think its useless to plan like some on here, but think about what you want. If it were me I would be looking for a beddy whippet stud dog so I had some notion of what the pups might look and act like. Get a strain going in years to come and you will have something to be proud of instead of swapping and changing.

What would cause that the tip of the quick becoming cold and dying back a few millimeters ?i don't know , but I suppose your going to doubt me and knit pick lolNo not at all just interested.and wondering how it works.probably because to nerve is too close so just dies back abit, each time you trim back it dies back abit more. Only understanding of it really.Dogs with long nails will have knocked toes, split nails and I would of thought weaker tendons in the foot due to it spreading the foot giving it a flat look. Your spot on with that mate. When a dogs standing on slabs the nails should

Cooking for your dogs or preparing the grub is part of the bond I think. The other thing is how do people know by feeding all in ones that they are getting the same out of there dogs, its hard to tell without sophisticated timing equipment, and what about a dogs happiness.A happy dog works better and what dog would choose to eat bag food when he could get some proper meat and veg. If all you can be bothered with is opening a bag you are missing a part of keeping working dogs. Peter that grub looks top stuff mate.

If the dog has good feet then the rest is bad luck because you are hunting woodland. I like a dogs feet to be the right shape but also strongly built with thick pads and thick strong nails. The best feet for me are like a deerhounds feet or a fox hounds. To be honest the type of injury you describe could happen to the best feet, but dogs need regular exercise to strengthen tendons bone etc.

Sounds like you lads all have young dogs and thats great, you can hope for the best, but if you get a really good one then you wont want to loose that blood, although most will anyway by continual outcrossing when they do breed, but you will always get upsets and disappointments with any livestock, but you should still plan,in fact if you are keen how do you not plan in your head. Gaz,you advise against planning and then lay your plans out that are in your head....see its hard not to if you are keen.

Hes obviously serious about this anyway......

If you want to learn about Hancocks dogs you should read his book 'a qestion of lurchers' He is a honest bloke. I have talked with him,and read his book and owned his dogs and thats how I know his dogs are not for me. He as never bred a true strain of lurcher and he is the first to admit it. He produces crosses that are fairly predictable in looks at least but who cannot be relied upon to produce the same again when bred to each other, which if you think about it is good for business. In my opinion there is better and more satisfying ways of obtaining a collie lurcher. If I was looking for th
