Ill be the first to admit, when i was a little younger,if i can remember that far back,i always wanted something better, never being happy with what id trained and entered. It took me a while to realise that the grass was,nt always greener over the other side.I cringe with some of the mistakes i made, the dogs i let go that i would give my right arm for now.I cannot abide youngsters now making the same mistakes i did, double standards definitely, with age comes reason, sometimes its to late for the dog,but the best lessons learnt are usually the harshest and most severe.

You probably suffer the idiot element over there as much as we do here, obviously we don,t have the same wilderness expanse as our American cousins,in which to practice our sport away from prying eyes and attention. We also have a less expansive quarry species to play with, all in all i think you lads over there have a better shot at carrying on hunting traditions that have spanned generations, centuries of breeding and expertise that, according to the ignorant minority, are no longer legal or justified in sport.
-
If the only reason your thinking about breeding a litter is to fill somebody elses kennel, then id say don,t bother. At the right time because of injury,s,age or death, you may need to replace stock, until then i would,nt add to the conveyor belt of lurcher pups that are looking for decent homes.

cheers buddy i couldn't tell ya what collie is in them i just no its in the breeding pal Farm bred, from generations of working Border Collies.

If every person who as ever had a dog that caused a set to now and again, had it culled, castrated or given away, then there would be an awful lot of dead, minus nuts or passed about jukels about.Put the dog in its place, don,t be over hard unless needed, better to discipline than cull, keep an eye on the situation, certain activities may trigger a negative reaction from the dog, stay clear of them.A dog with a bit of attitude would possibly be an asset round the caravan, control the dog and if and only if the situation becomes to much for you to handle, dig an hole for it.

My season finishes end of Feb,with adult dogs,if you are in the unfortunate position of having a youngster that reaches the age of entering as the season closes,im talking lurchers here, then i would,nt hold the dog back,at probably the most important stage of its learning.I find a place that holds plenty of bunny,s and put a small dent in the population, its not something i take any real satisfaction from,i hate to kill breeders and young, but the dog needs the education more than my conscience.

A decent ferreting dog would be worth its weight in gold,id be dubious if one was cheap or gifted. You may have to set your sights a little lower ang get him something he can train up and bond with at the same time.

I can only imagine the torment and anguish the man was suffering, may he be at peace now.Its heartening to see all the positive posts on here, its sometimes the case that one or two of us have had the need to fall foul of the law and then been less than complimentary about the boys in blue, certain people may read these posts and realise at a time like this we can put our grievances behind us and show support for a proud Officer and his family.

All the homework on a suitable sire should have been undertaken long before now,id personally miss this time and concentrate on finding a suitable working sire for future reference, breed in haste, repent at leisure.

I used to be on friendly terms with a Fat ugly barmaid,a standing cock as no conscience was never a truer word spoken, the lads used to laugh when i waited for closing time,to walk her home, little did they know id been supping at the landlords expense all night, after a few beers it was surprising what an attractive lass she looked.

What a load of bollocks. How do you think a gundog catches a runner to retrieve it? A decent gundog needs plenty of 'preydrive' in order to do it's job properly. I always thought that gundogs only chased on command so as not to be running about willy nilly scattering all and sundry.

Ive seen this happening more and more, its a sad reflection on hunters, especially dogmen when landowners take the descision to eradicate ground game to protect their property and crops, local to me the hares are being shot and dumped in gateways, either thats to let the poachers know its a waste of time coming on here,or they are as bad as the lads who caused the initial problems.

Word of warning, don,t microwave the phone first, taste better boiled.
-
Let the pup have access to the ferret, first looking through the wire of the cage, then running free, control the contact, making sure the pup does,nt become to boisterous and the ferret not to nippy.
-
Try eating the phone and then ringing for an ambulance with the pizza, then you will know.

I understand the farmers predicament and the need to control numbers on the land, you have exercised your rights to get out in the field and take advantage of a situation beyond your control, most likely an enjoyable day at that, the farmer would also have been grateful for the service provided, fair play to you,as a lurcher owner i wish i still had the same rights.
-
Your dogs, your responsibility, either learn to accept and deal with it,or keep the dogs on a lead.

Shooters and coursers,in an ideal world, would have the same rights and priveliges to do with an hare,as they will, the dog men,for reasons beyond any form of such reason, have to all intent, lost that right.Thats the real imbalance and travesty, yet shooters crow on about the moaning dog brigade, your most fortunate you still have the rights that have been taken away from no lesser men,you still have the legality to control,in some areas,a species you class as a pest.Dog men would love the opportunity to control them legitimately and share some of the burden. So whilst this imbalance of the justice
-
Most people recognise the need to control a pest species, its difficult to explain to a member of the shooting fraternity,i know ive tried, but once youve tested a dog or two, over the years,on the most challenging of courses, the hare, its nearly impossible not to walk away with some sort of respect and affinity for this most noble of beasts, when you witness an hare giving the mutt the most difficult and challenging of runs, you often wish, usually after they,ve captured the hare, that it had made its escape and would be there to run another day. With a gun there is,nt the same connection and respect,

The sight of a Deerhound/Grey in full flight,on open land,is a thing of seemingly effortless beauty and grace,a sight that holds in the memory like no other, ive witnessed Saluki types and they are also a wondrous spectacle, yet they lack the regal magesty of Deerhound types.
-
A man with a gun as as much right to an hare as a man with a dog,why one is banned and the other is still legal is beyond my comprehension.I could never stand in a line shooting driven hares, its not sporting and to me is mindless slaughter.Coursing with dogs,if done in a sporting manner,is a more sporting option that recognises the prowess of the chaser and more importantly the pursued. If in the minority of cases there is no other viable option than to drive to guns,so be it,what a waste though.

looking to stup my beddy x whip x grey?
morton replied to welshviper's topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
The dogs hardly got going yet, give it a few seasons work and then and only then,if it meets all your needs and you want another mutt in the kennel, line a suitable bitch, that as also proven herself in the field. -
Well done.
-
Its not neccessarily the breed itself wherein the problem lies but the type of person it attracts,it suffers more than any other type of lurcher with the numptys that are more interested in the mutt as a status symbol than a working dog.

I hear they are looking for workers in Korea,£4 for a 60 hour week and as much rice and seaweed as you can eat.
