  1. Dog possibly needs the owner to take a firmer stance with it,easy options, that probably won,t solve the issue, are not the way to deal with a problem terrier.
  2. Ive never owned a good dog then.
  3. English bullxGreyhound, could,nt catch a fat lass in high heels,i nicknamed it boomerang because it kept coming back, ended up with a terrier lad who made better use of it.

  11. Used to get to a few of the terrier shows, everbody in the boozer afterwards, then sit listening to some of the old fella,s,tales of past hunts, memorable digs and rescues, the exploits of some of the dogs and terriermen, the old sing song.Never really the same with the lurcher shows.
  12. Your more likely to receive harsher treatment in a Court of Law for an hunting related prosecution, than one for mugging an old dear.Therein lies the real travesty and underlines the resolve of certain political organisations to keep pressure on the Politicians to ensure the ban stays. So with little hope of things changing,to the benefit of the hunting fraternity, especially the dog men/women,you may have to resort to a little discretion in the field, which in reality,as always been the way.
  13. If its Mange you won,t be able to wait 1 day to treat it,get around a few Chemists as soon as,look for a late night Chemist tonight, ask for Ascabiol, same as Benzyl 1/2 the price, tell Chemist its for you, they probably won,t let you have it if you say its for the dog, dilute 1/2 and 1/2 with water and rub it into the dogs skin, making sure you cover all of it,be careful round the eyes, burn its bedding and treat its living quarters before putting the dog back.
  14. The main reason i own Collie[Working Border, ive never seen a true working Beardie]bred lurchers is,they can adapt to different situations in the field, with time and experience, without having to look for guidance or command,as soon as you stifle their natural hunting ability with to much training they spend time looking for their owners guidance to the detriment of the job in hand. The time taken for agility and obedience training is valuable education time lost in the field.
  15. The dog is to young to be showing any real inclination to hunt on its own initiative,as it matures and becomes more confident the hunting instinct will take over, taking it out with an experienced dog to follow will help it along.
  16. Ive had numerous Collie bred lurchers and can say in all honesty ive never yet owned a duff one,but i know the pitfalls of a Collie brained lurcher and have learnt to adapt to each individual, there is no other lurcher base that offers as much to the working lurcher.I prefer the addition of Deerhound blood to the mix as one seems to compliment the attributes of the other,in the right balance. When i hear stories of failed dogs i am more inclined to go for the failings of the owner,Collie bred dogs will not always suit the temperament of an owner without a certain amount of patience and an abilit
  17. If you are struggling with 2 dogs then the youngster will not receive the attention it may need at this vital stage of its development, take the youngster on its own and kick up a few easy runs,it will learn more that way.
  18. When its trained, stockbroken, finished growing and fit.
  19. There is easy running in the Dales,as anywhere else, but a lot of the running, especially as you go higher, can test the best of dogs, there,s only one way to find out for yourselves,it takes some dedication to put the time and expense to firstly get the permission and then go back time after time and make use of it,thats what sorts the wheat from the chaff.
  20. Youve had a good mooch about, the dogs have been exercised and had a gallop or two, youve probably learnt something new that will make you better prepared for your next jaunt, youve also learnt a bit more about how the land lies and were to get a better run next time. Its always more satisfying to carry something home but blank nights can still be productive.
  21. Before the ban id happily go out with total strangers,we used to head up the Dales with a full Sherpa mini-bus,lampers and bunny carriers, ive done days on the Fens and plough in company, trailed the terriers about taking my go on the shovel. When the ban came so came to an end the more cavalier attitude, ive mates with no dogs and criminal records because of the company they kept, now i choose my company and prefer to walk alone, its the safer option.I feel for the genuine lads starting out now,if they stick to it with the problems they face, then i hold my hand up to them.
  22. You don,t have to look far to find the reason,s behind some of the animosity between different hunting factions, its best to respect anothers choice of hunting lifestyle, there will be a difference of opinion now and then,if you can,t live with that its best to stay at home.
