    Its not possible to pick with any certainty the outcome of a pup,what you put into its,nutrition and development will tip the scale in your favour,i always find that a certain pup,or 2,somehow manages to pick themselves.

    Its often annoying to be tugged by the law,but at the end of the day,thats their job,if you are legitimately going about your sport,with the motor all legit,then the majority of them will bid you good night and send you on your way,there is always the twat that dislikes hunters and killing game,thats life,we all know the minority of lurcher owners are scumbags and are more interested in using the late dark nights to cover their criminal activities,thats also life.Show them the dogs and all your kit,explain the time and trouble it takes you to get the dog ready for the field,the expense you go

    I was taught that the lurcher had to adapt and be able to cope with whatever edible game crossed its path and to do a bit of pest control to boot,not that long ago a lurcher pup was available for a pittence,so the only time a litter was bred was to replace another dog.Now the same pup commands a decent price and certain people see £ signs as soon as a bitch comes into season,to much trash is bred now,not helped by the wider audience created by the internet and the computer experts that sprang up overnight,fancy breeding and bloodlines,the majority of which are mediocre,certain breeds that are

    If they never took fox,that would be possibly down to their entering or poor breeding,compared to a purpose bred hare dog the vast majority of rough coated lurchers will come second.The Deerhound-Grey/Collie-Grey was bred as an allrounder,to fulfill a multitude of tasks,something the right ones excelled at,as a fox and venison dog,in the past,they more than held their own and on the heavier,rougher terrain had few equals.As in all other lurchers its usually poor training and entering that results in dogs not attaining their true potential.

    By the time its found a way round or through the chase is all but lost,a dog that is ready to enter to the field should be able to follow its pursuit,or its not ready to be out and about,it reflects badly on the owner to attempt to start an ill prepared dog.

    I saw an advertisement for a dog for sale "18 month old good allrounder",that was an over optimistic owner,buyer as well perhaps.It takes many seasons of dedicated work and training to consider a dog an allrounder,even then between different owners and areas of the country,the same ideals of the allround lurcher will have different meanings.

    I witnessed a Lakey stumble upon a Fallow hind and try to stay attached as the hind set off,it was a few seconds of a game little tyro who did,nt know or realise it was seriously out of its depth.There are enough small type lurchers about that don,t realise they are totally outmatched on certain quarry species,i don,t believe they could do it with any regularity but i would say that it does occur.It would be easier to run a dog that is more suited,but the whippet/beddy suits the needs of a few hardened hunting types and if the dog exceeds itself now and again,fair play.To many doubt the abilit

    Mate used to tag along with us with his standard poodle,it suprised me with its turn of pace and turning ability,i pondered on using it to a bitch i owned but decided on a more conventional,proven outcross,ill never know if i made the right descision.

    An old lurcher i owned many years ago accounted for his fair share of fox,s and squirrels,the only life threatening injury he ever sustained was from a squirrel,he was bit just behind the nose and the amount of blood he lost was unreal,even with my T shirt ripped into bandages to staunch the flow,little grey tree rats know how to defend their furry tail.

    I can,t be bothered to even watch the clip,its the same old story,time after time after time.I find it so totally incredulous that after all the prosecutions,people are still so immersed in their neanderthal mentality that they still have not registered to the fact,you don,t,under any circumstance,take pictures of any sort that may incriminate you at a later date.I despair of the mindless minority with dogs,that are the real reason the ban will never be lifted.

    Its a no win situation,you try and do the right thing and go for permission,you get knocked back time after time,frustration creeps in and you do what you have to do,to get the mutt some runs.If you keep asking,even making a nuisance of yourself and knocking the same doors,eventually you will get a positive response,it will most likely be on land thats not really worth the effort,but it gives you a legitimate excuse to be out,day or night.Treat the permission with respect and little pockets of land will open up to you,don,t take no for an answer and persevere.Be polite.

    Before taking the dog out hunting,especially after an injury,you should have slowly built its fitness levels up and got rid of the excess weight,any problems after that will be down to the owner.

    Why would anybody feel the need to justify,to a total stranger,the ability of the dogs in their kennel.Im happy with my little lot and don,t give a flying f**k what other people think of them,if a dog is no good then the only person who will lose out is the misguided fool who tries to work them. and your point is ??
