One of the best dogs ive ever had the pleasure of walking the land with was a rag racing 22" Barnsley bred whippety, alas it was,nt the norm,if this dog could have been replicated i may have trod a different path, possibly,i have found my pleasures in other types that produced the goods on a more reliable basis.

He came from the slums, abject poverty, generations that never recieved any formal education,he led the life that was not of his,or his familys choosing.Where then does all that humility and understanding come from?. Think he likes playing the martyr. He certainly does not live in poverty now, with all his lackeys running around at his every whim Would that be financial poverty, because he owns nothing apart from his religious beliefs, the man is poor in our western style of understanding, money and property, yet he is rich in other ways.

Its not a 1st cross then, just concentrate on the dogs good points, forget about breeding, most dogs are not worth breeding from,if the dog over the next few years fulfills all your expectations, then start to think of breeding, until then just enjoy.

Im in agreement with most of that,i like whippets, ive seen what good uns are capable of,yet, ive also seen what they lack.A good smaller type lurcher,to me,is a better option. Fairplay matey, i'm not going to argue with that, but so far, i've yet to see a small lurcher better than my whip at hunting up daytime. Some of them couldnt find game in a telephone box. Its all in the breeding.

!st crosses are only a start, its how you choose to breed the second x that usually produces the goods.

Might be better off hidden behind more than a fence because that dumb f**k must like the sort of attention its better to live without.

That dog must have seen some big tough wabbits, this to me is the reason the bullx lurcher gets all the bad press, the majority of us are more than aware of the type of work some of these dogs are best suited to,its the mindless, thick knuckle draggers that feel the need to display it on an open forum, prick.

When it comes to rabbits the majority of lurchers,no matter the breeding, will come to terms with them with relative ease,if they don,t then id be looking for the nearest wheelie bin.If my main hunting was bunny,s id be selective with the type and breeding of the lurcher, bullx,s wouldnt be something id want to much of in the mix,if at all.Ive owned them that where more than capable, but not as capable,in general,as other types.

Im off to put the dvd on,One foot in the Algarve, being patient ive waited until now to ask the question that as been burning away in my noggin, what was the name you called the pup?.Be warned the next 20 litters advertised for free on here will have a pup with the same name.

Stop being a grump Nearly 9yrs ago, someone from a forum named one of mine, a perfect name i would not have thought of myself Some of the threads on here must test the most laid back, gentle natured and understanding of us,sometimes.I see these posts and straight away feel blessed that even though i only have a modicum of common sense and mental aptitude,i feel that i am able to think of a dogs name,un-aided.This and another post, somebody posting piccy,s of pups before they are even dry and settled, pushed my otherwise pleasant and carefree existence into grumpy mode.I firmly am of the opi

Cannot think of name for a pup, what the F**k are you going to do when it needs some food buying, needs exercising, needs training needs to see a vet, catches something,F**ks off to someone who shouts a name they,ve thought up for it because you can,t??????.Whats the deal now with people coming into world of lurchers,is the first requirement that they have the ability to use a brush and tartan paint or count to 20 without taking their shoes and socks off.Ill help with a couple of names,so you don,t get a migraine thinking to fast,Dumc and Hunt.

As you are obviously unsure about when to start a pup i would say, concentrate on the dogs training, stock breaking and fitness.Forget about entering the dog until its 14 month old, this way the dog will be physically and mentally more capable of handling the mistakes you will make, better than if you start it before its finished growing and maturing a tad.Try and get out with somebody reliable and capable enough of showing you the ropes,if this is not possible then just start slowly, easy runs short outings in the field and don,t put undue pressure on the mutt.

Is the (Non-Ped) Whippet a Lurcher ?
morton replied to chartpolski's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Early ,s i used to tag along with a lad to the rag racing around Barnsley,he ended up with a pup that made 22" and weighed about 35lb,basically a whippet/Grey mix,the dog was a bunny slayer and nobbled an hare or 2,good nose and worked all day.The breeding would be classed today as a working whippet type, non KC,then it was classed as a racing type whippet. Now it would possibly be a lurcher.Depends who,s kennel its in,i suppose. -
Breed from workers and reap the reward, breed for a fad or whim and you may waste a couple of years on a duffer.

lurcher stopping in the middle of a course
morton replied to smudge jaylow's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Leave the lamp alone until much later in the year,Find the dog the odd easy run and then home.At this time of year, especially of late,it as been very warm,it does,nt take much for the mutt to overheat and not want to run.The dog is young and will soon savvy up with a few short lessons,be patient and don,t be to bothered about the dog catching and chasing yet,it will all come in due course. -
You can only get into bother if your doing something wrong, walking dogs,on leads, around the footpaths etc.may raise the odd eyebrow,as you are doing nothing illegal theres no need to worry,if you are planning on accidently letting the dogs loose on a bunny or 2,then you could fall foul of the locals. Is it to cold in winter for you and your mate to hit the dales?. ok, and were not planning on going for rabbits its just where we live is in the city and wanna get somewhere right out in the open for a good walk about So,you are going to drive all the way from the N.East to find some countryside

Leroy will have to make do on his own then.

They seldom give you a choice,it would be nice if they offered you a list of suitable alternative punishments, stocks, keel hauling, bashed on the bare bottom with a bunch of thistles and nettles or even a night of oral passion with Anne Widdecombe, but in the real world if you takes your chances youve got to be prepared to take the consequence that ensue, good or bad.

Ireland Moira Gamefair High Jump
morton replied to Wetnoseman's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
I would,nt put my dogs at risk with high jumping at shows,an unecessary risk just for a trophy. The best jumping test used to be the speed jumping [A show at Colne,Nelson? years ago used to put one on],the dog had to navigate several obstacles, wooden and wire fences, gates etc.nothing more than 4ft.The fastest dog to complete the circuit won, some friendly rivalry ensued and there was a long queue of entrants,it raised plenty of funds to boot. -
On topic,i rarely buy the cmw now,the main articles that held my interest where the lurcher and terrier section. The standard of these articles,on the whole now,is of a standard i don,t wish to pay to read. The only articles that,on the whole,i could relate to are written by P.T.Sorry Penny,im not forking out my £2 just to read your input{just pm me your article, cheers].It would be easier to write some of the articles slowly, because a lot of readers don,t think very fast,i read the article on fox,s and found little to disagree with,i don,t know whether thats because i understood the gist of it,r
