Ive known a lot of different breeds of dogs do it,i doubt breeding plays a part.Ive seen dogs out of the same litter where one will do it and none of the others, ive only had one dog that never grew out of it,chilli powder cured the problem.

Walking the land during the day not only learns you the danger zones, but also the easiest points of access to other fields etc.Nothing worse than blind lamping and struggling to enter the next field. You can also see where the quarry is seeking refuge and use the knowledge gained to plan your night accordingly.

train my new pup with real rabbit skin??
morton replied to dannyevans1990's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Go to tha market and purchase a big bag of carrots, buy British-ill explain later, now find some fields and walk round and round until you find a rabbit hole, sit quietely down and rub 2 carrots together, this is why you need British carrots as they may not know the sound of foreign varieties, when a rabbit pops out for a free meal grab it by the ears and put it in a bag, don,t use a Netto bag because they get out of them to easily, hurry home and with the aid of a sharp knife, maybe in your case one not to sharp, skin the bunny, not forgetting to kill it first, because its easier and less traumatic, you -
Certain owners of lurchers could not learn a "pig how to be filthy",sadly the Bullx type seems to attract this type more than any other, thats where the problem lies, poor breeding to supply demand does not help, decent bred dogs in the wrong hands further ruin the cause. The worst for me though are the ones who have convinced themselves that only the Bullx is capable of regularly coming to terms with anything other than an obese bunny,i find it such an humbling experience to know, that centuries of lurcher work with other type breeds have all been in vain.

Lets have a look at the deerhound x's
morton replied to MaxiMuM-RisK's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Possibly because thats the choice they make, thats the beauty about lurchers, there,s a different choice of size, colour, coat and breeding to suit most needs, some people are never happy or satisfied with their mutt and others are more than happy even if,to others,it seems an unusual or unsuitable choice. -
Roast the trotters in the oven, pour away excess fat, leave to cool, dogs love em,or boil 4 trotters in a big pan for an hour, throw in 4 or 5 bunnys, make sure they are dead and skinned and gutted, another hour and pick all the bones out,the rest will set like a braun jelly.Good treat for the mutts once a week.

Would that be because the Dales rabbits don,t get lamped?,a lamp shy bunny is harder to catch wherever you are, thats when i get the ferrets out and the bolted rabbits don,t run any faster in the Downs than they do in the Dales.
-
I have to chuckle when people say the Dales bunny,s are easy and slow,a rabbits a rabbit whether in the Dales or on the Downs, ive lamped up and down the country and always found that the ground you run on and the numbers it holds plays a significant role in the numbers accounted for. Most of the fields in the Dales are surrounded by drystone walls, the bunnys are enclosed which aids the lamping.Rabbits are not to difficult to catch with the average lurcher,so when the numbers are in front of you it sometimes seems easier.

I really think you should think clearly about what you expect from a youngster and what a litter from a relatively inexperienced dog will achieve,if the dog proves suitable for your needs, over a few seasons and you feel the need to take a pup out of her, then fair play.Whats the big hurry?.
-
You own a 6 month old pup, that you are going to breed from next year?!!!.A lot of people would have been more interested in getting a few seasons work out of a dog and then deciding if it was suitable to breed from, but its your dog,so good luck, you won,t be the first numpty thats ever owned a lurcher or struggled to get rid of a litter of pups.

Its the people who post pictures that are only interested in bigging themselves up,with no real interest in the dog or the hunt, just their own thick halfwit mentality, that ruin it.Pictures, portraying the outcome of a days sporting activity, with the emphasis on the dogs, their breeding entering and training, especially some of the overseas posts, are more readily acceptable,as long as they are of a Legal nature. This is where the halfwits come in again as they believe they are the only ones who have ever entered a field and tested a lurcher, until the vast majority of people on sites like this learn

As a youngster i once made myself a waistcoat out of bunny pelts,i spent an eternity carefully skinning and trimming the skins, rubbing borax into them and then sewing them together.Arriving home from school one day my pride and joy was dumped outside,my mother had found this rotten half cured fly magnet in my bedroom.

Ive run a couple of whippets over the years,i found that with everything in the dogs favour the odd one was added to the bag, when the whippets had been overfaced a few times they had a tendency to open up when running, not a major problem on permission,at other times a liability. My whippets stood at about 19"-20".A mate had a 22" whippet bred from the rag chasers of Barnsley, this dog performed better on Hares but was still to easily overfaced.

I personally found that hidden amongst his numerous posts, even the legible ones,he had a wealth of knowledge concerning lurchers and their uses in the field,i disagreed with a lot of rubbish he put up and ignored those posts, the same as i do with other peoples offerings.
-
So you'd apply that to everybody but the man in question then? It was whin's total disregard to other peoples opinions that ultimately led to all the bollocks that followed him about the place non stop.. I agree there was Whins opinion and nothing else mattered,if i did,nt like his posts i disregarded them and moved on,if people had ignored him more he,d still be here, lesson for everyone.
-
I personally think he offered more to the site than most, unless people learn to accept others views without the bitchfest that follows, then the likes of Whin, whom have an opinion on anything and everything, will be lost to the site, mores the pity.

I fail to understand how you let a dog that likes chasing mutton, off a lead when in proximity to them, sort yourself and the mutt out,if its beyond your intelligence to comprehend the seriousness of the situation then get rid to someone more capable of taking a firmer stance with the dog.The dogs only doing what comes natural to it,its got to learn what it can and cannot chase.
-
Better keep it away from Motorways then.

If you feel the need to draw inspiration off here then id say NO.

who is breeding the best dogs these days
morton replied to 2.8 guy's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The good lurcher breeders are the ones who breed to replace old or injured stock, from tried and tested parents, they,ve little interest in making a name for themselves, don,t pretend they,ve the best dogs in the world and have little to prove to anyone. They most likely won,t be found on here.- 40 replies

With only working 16 hours he will have plenty of time for the pup, with all that time he could source some free food for the pup or cut back on something else for the sake of the pup.Or take the easy option and get rid.

Im waiting for the lamping in daylight with Stevie Wonder next.

As soon as his missus tells him to get shut ,It will be another lurcher in the dogs home . till he grows a set of bollax , he deserves fk all. Totally agree with you. What a ridiculous environment to bring a pup in to......a woman who won't even spend 50 pounds on a pup and doesn't want one in the first place?? And a man who puts up with it?? Poor puppy. I agree with asanley....first spot of 'bother' and the pup'll be kicked out. fyi i can get 50 for a dog no probs, shes just not giving me 150 or something like that, and neither of us really want a puppy that pisses shits and chews

The trouble with people getting pulled over by Mr. Policeman is they are never ever doing anything wrong, its part and parcel of the dog game now, expect it and be prepared, the same people who slate the law are the 1st to ring them when it suits their need, they do a job of work,i think its because they actually work that upsets some people.
