  1. Youve confused me to,i never wrote that it aids recall, but,it certainly as assisted me with the training of a youngster that liked to cock a deaf ear at times,i would,nt see the need to couple a dog thats in a confined space, what purpose would that possibly serve?,the greatest benefit in couple training is to use it in the field or along a country lane,it aids safety, controls an uneducated dog whilst still giving it a sense of freedom and also leaves hands free to concentrate on other aspects of the dogs training.
  2. Ive more often than not had 2 lurcher pups to bring on at the same time, ive always used couples as part of the training. The pup needs to be a certain size first,it settles an unruly pup,it certainly assists with certain training and obedience, the benefits far outweigh any perceived cases of mishap, ive never yet had an injury with using couples, far more chance of injury from an out of control lurcher,i would,nt use them when the dogs are allowed freedom to stretch their legs.My adult dogs are often kept on couples, they have learnt from pups how to behave when wearing them and know when they com
  3. The early shows were attended,on the whole,by like minded lurcher and terriermen/women,working ability was never questioned because at that time there was little other reason to own such a dog.It started creeping into the terrier shows and was soon followed by the lurchers,an element of breeders put beauty before function and because there was a ready market for winning dogs, sold at a premium price, the working side became of lesser importance, even to some so called respected breeders of working type stock. The internet further helped to add to the influx of poor breeding,so many people now thin
  4. Ive seen a Borzoi/Lurcher cross,it was,nt in a working kennel,it looked well balanced and could cover the ground.A true working type Borzoi added into a certain type of lurcher breeding would possibly make more than a useful animal, anyone got a non KC Borzoi with genuine breeding behind it ?.
  5. Is that assumption based on experience in the field or plugging in a computer?. near forgot about you.........never been on the fens in my life but coursed plenty of hare in ireland So what you are basically saying is that youve only witnessed a gallop in Ireland and your well thought out balanced opinion is this makes the Irish dog the best.
  6. Is that assumption based on experience in the field or plugging in a computer?.
  7. Fair play to you,at least your making the effort,to many will take the easy option, breed out of anything, use any dog available and take pot luck.Don,t be to hung up on finding a line out of one of the supposed top dogs and best line, find a dog that does everything your looking for and will enhance what the bitch gives to you, take your time and be selective, all the best.
  8. Let me guess you know the kid who owns the midge dog the judge did what was asked of him any one of them dogs in final 10 could of won it hopefully the same class of entered terriers will show up this year Tongue in cheek pal,I stood ringside and everybody was picking a different dog in that class, good show well worth a trip out.I do know the midge dog though.
  9. The lads that will be advertising them on the sites you mention will also be some of the lads on here trying to sell you the same mutts.Take your time, find the right owner and you will find the right dog, don,t be afraid of asking questions and walking away if your not quite happy, buy in haste and repent at leisure.
  10. I've had a few small lurchers which took fox regularly, and I agree........any lurcher should be able to take them on open ground. The only time mine missed is when the fox was going through really thick cover: doubling back on itself in brambles etc. I have a very good day time lurcher which wouldn't take them on the lamp, but bust cover and guts to get them by day: strange bitch! Skycat, when you say "any lurcher should be able to take them on open ground",i take that to mean, any proven fox dog and not any lurcher in general?.
  11. The youngsters grown into itself now, looks well balanced and strong. Its second season should see it achieving its potential.
  12. Im different, ive rarely seen a Collie cross,in good hands, failing to make a decent lamper.
  13. Id have thought the original fox killing lurchers, probably Deerhoundy type, came down from Scotland with the Tod hunters, these travelling pest controllers only got paid by the brush,a missed fox was a lost dollar,so it seems safe to assume that a fox killing lurcher would have been only second to a good terrier in their pack. Some of these Tod hunting familys can be traced back centuries,i remember seeing old photos,in an old fell hunting book?,depicting one of these travelling familys with a few raggy terriers and a very Deerhoundy looking lurcher.
  14. Little and often, quality before quantity. When they get to about 10 months cut down gradually to twice a day, when they achieve adulthood, once a day.
  15. Only went to 2 shows last year, this was one of them, good show, well run.The Midge dog should have taken the entered terrier.
  16. Its frustrating for the dog sometimes when it knows better than the owner.
  17. If ive a youngster in the kennel,no matter what time of year it is,then the dog needs its education, waiting for the season to come around will mean a dog missing an important part of said education, youngsters go through stages when they soak up knowledge gained in the field, they can never ever gain the same level of training in a kennel.I find a place away from my doorstep, then put a small dent in the rabbit population, you don,t need to be looking at catching large amounts, just a few easy runs and letting the dog mooch about is all thats needed.

Unless leaving them will affect your employment,or you are protecting your livestock,i prefer to leave them to mature and make a more worthwhile sporting option.
  19. As soon as you put 2 or 3 a night every week i lost interest, why don,t you and your friend find something else more worthwhile to discuss, girls, boys, football or beer.
  20. I can,t be bothered trawling through the majority of this but for my tuppence worth,Gary went down the wrong road with his dogs many years ago,he attempted to rectify the problem at times but did like a looker,a lot of times to the detriment of the working side of his Lakeys.Ive owned a couple of honest workers bred from genuine Middleton terriers and have seen others that would have graced any working kennel, ive also seen some trash. The main problem with his breeding was the peddlars that jumped on the gravy train and attributed everything that entered a show,or pups advertised at inflated pr
  21. Just get it to somewhere it cannot squeeze through or go round, climb over and wait until it picks up the nerve to jump or scramble over,it will get there eventually, repeat the process 2 or 3 times,on each training trip it will become more confident and accomplished, repetition is the key, short training sessions broken up between retrieving, jumping, return etc.
  22. The hare in one form or another as evolved over millenia, its physical make up and natural instinct as taught it to run from danger,at speed, over long distances. It will have evolved alongside canine, feline and avian predators most of which it will not have encountered for centuries.I often encounter them in woodland and heavy cover during the day and find that they will readily run to ground to escape pursuit, drains, warrens, rock crevices etc,i think this must be part and parcel of their evolution, they always seem to seek cover,if possible to evade capture, whether this was protection from airbou
  23. Better looking mutt than some ive seen on here, won,t be long before somebody wants to know if its for sale,or are you planning a litter out of it.
  24. If there was no intent on your part, the law recognises it as a misfortunate accident. All you can be legally expected to do is be more aware and take precautions that it does,nt happen again.
  25. u dont deserve a dog Shit maybe I should sell mine then How much?,if its never had to be left in the field with the others it must be worth a punt.
