Cracking pup flipbull. Watch him with that tinfoil though. I've known a dog have to be operated on after eating that. V. expensive. I hate the stuff.

I think they used to put hormone pellets in the neck to caponize them but I'm fairly sure they don't anymore. We used to put them in the sheds as day olds and they weren't touched again 'til catching time. As for the teeth, mine all have sparkling white teeth .

I get a 10 kilo box for a fiver but I used to work chicken catching so I think I get good rates. The legs are good too. I feed a handfull or two, depending on the size of the dog, with a leg or a lump of rabbit carcase etc. etc. and some meal, stale bread, boiled rice, ....whatevers left over in the kitchen. They seem to do OK on it.

The Match Dog Limited Print

That was what I meant . -
After I've been out I pour a good glass of whiskey, wash the dogs feet, then deal with the catch - no time for DVDs then.

I don't like it a lot myself but thanks for putting it up mate. I was keen to see what it was like. The separate bits seem a bit unconnected to me but that's only my opinion. -
I reckon you should stand the Don dog at public stud. He'd do nothing but good to the lurcher population. He's got enough of the right kind of collie to make an impact on any line.

Don't you think that dog really caught that then???

What A Bargain.................not!!

If you want a big furry pet look no further. Their price is cheap compared to kennel club deerhounds or old english sheepdogs and with the beardie blood chances are that they're sounder too. Not exactly what you'd buy as a worker though eh??? -
Garmin Etc. Dog Locators.

That would be great nancy. I read somewhere that the new ones can be downgraded somehow and then they'll work. Is Ireland the same as the UK in this then? -
I'm interested in these but haven't a clue where to start looking. I'd like to hear from anyone with experience, what works well, what's legal, how much (roughly) it costs, how to make an illegal one legal (or will it work illegally?), can I buy one in Europe or do I have to ship one from the USA. Basically anything useful anyone can tell me about them. I'm sure a few must be using them by now and it sounds like something that could be really useful to me.

How old was she when you got her as a pup? I've had a lot of collie crosses over the years and I believe the two most important points are 1) Avoid breeding from a neurotic collie or collie lurcher ...and 2) Get the pup young and socialise it well.(animals, other dogs, people, traffic etc. -

Get it scanned and put it up then! -
Living in doesn't make a dog "soft" or stop it working. Whatever stopped it working is something else. That might not be the answer you're looking for but it's the truth. However, if you do bring a kennel dog in, it must have access to drinking water at all times, it must have a cool but draft free bed to go to and it must be taken out at regular intervals for the toilet until it's learned and is able to wait. This may need a bit of patience and a bucket, sponge and disinfectant kept handy. Punishment is not the way to go here.

hjkc rhf&d or....hjcc live to hand.
-
Or HJCC in the case of rabbits and sometimes even hares.
-
When I lived on land with lots of hares I've both gate netted and lamped the occasional hare. I only took enough to eat and the occasional one to sell and I can't see anything wrong with either when done like that. If you like to see a rabbit purse netted then imagine the feeling in your gut when you hear the hare coming and it pops neatly into the meshes right in front of you, topline down and hopping all over.

Mine will call off a scent, hot or cold, at any time during the hunt. They will also redirect with hand signals though I hardly ever help them out like that, preferring them to work it out themselves. Once game is sighted they won't stop 'til they catch or lose it. And if it goes out of sight you need to rely on your ears.
-
Jigsaw, most of my daytime hunting is like that. I travel upwind and let my dogs range on a bit ahead of me 'til they get on a warm scent. My collie x bitch is fairly good at following and can canter along at maybe half speed on a hot scent. The deer x pup you put me onto had her first hare in a forestry block that way. Went out of sight on a scent and came galloping back, carrying a hare and very pleased with herself. They'll dodder around on cold scent but as soon as they cross a warm one you can see the excitement as their ears prick and their energy level seems to rise. I like to just st

Thanks for posting what you did Krawnden. I used to have a sunday magazine supplement from the 80s with a feature on the joint meets. The photos were pretty good if I remember rightly but I've looked all over and can't find it.

Having A Good Biddable Dog But....
Maximus Ferret replied to Drebz87's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
She's doing well from the sound of it. When you're lamping, just keep calling her back as soon as she starts to hunt on. Don't worry about scaring off a few bunnies. At this stage training your dog is more important but DO let her hunt on, just for a second or two on any that go into hedges. It's often possible to push them back out. -
Very rarely for sale and a bit pricey when it is. I'd love to read it myself if anyone would sell a copy?
