  1. As above, what the "brains" is really for is not so much to assist in catching but more to make the dog "handy" and easier/faster to train and handle. As an example if you want a dog to work out of sight on the other side of a hedge you're ferreting a handy dog can be trusted to do this and will bring any rabbits either to you or to it,s spot at the hedge back. I won't say no other type of lurcher can be made manageable like this but IMO it's easier with a collie cross.
  2. A lot of lurchers go through a phase like this at around months to a year old. With sal crosses it can last a lot longer but if you hang in there she'll probably mature eventually. Thats salukis .
  3. Any longshot to medium shots with a decent chance? If the grounds as wet there as it is here it surely must favour some of them.
  4. Why is that Morton? I'm not having a dig, just curious. I know a breeder here that runs his pures on fox and hare and saw two litters advertised last year of deerhound with dashes of bull and grey added. Also these on here - http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/306694-lurcher-pups-half-pit-14deerhound-14greyhound/
  5. I see you're in Ireland. If you wanted a working deerhound you'd certainly have more chance of getting one here than in the UK.
  6. They're obviously bred purely as pets and bought only by people looking for pets. I don't see how they could be any threat at all to the working lurcher. Only a total moron would buy one to work. They'll probably get better homes than the majority of pups supposedly bred from working stock in my opinion.
  7. Dogs usually adapt to this kind of shit better than we do because they don't waste time feeling sorry for themselves - they just get on with it. Look at this
  8. He means a nanny state where most people seem to follow what they're told like a flock of sheep follow each other.
  9. Good trip out there Jim. Did you knock up the dogs collar quickly from cable ties or does it have a special purpose?
  10. I know mate, the hare might have evolved but lurchers ain't Except for the saluki ones of course. Don't go forgetting them!
  11. That's british law, isn't it? Anyone know the law on this in Ireland?
  12. The standard poodle won and looking at the feckin thing........ well it just about sums it all up for me.
  13. Are they a good working line as the seller say's Russ? I have to say, it beats me why so many people seem to buy pups only to sell them again before they're old enough to do anything.
  14. http://www.donedeal.ie/dogs-for-sale/3-4-wheaton-hound/6546320 This one's nowt to do with me but it'll show you what they look like. Reading the add it sounds like it's been dipped in egg and bread crumbs.
  15. Funny to hear you mention Cyril. I hadn't thought of him for years. Different dogs every time you met him. (I lived in Lincolnshire back then) Him and his daughter Sharon moved from Hainton to Dogdyke site.
  16. Terrible thing to happen Jim. It's bad enough when an old dog dies but Ern was in his prime. I think you should take a week or two to get over it then think about studding Snipe to a good bitch if he's still able for it.
  17. Do you spot much other wildlife with it? Just curious. I'd love to try one but I'm too mean to buy one until I know just how good it is.
  18. I've got this picture in me head now of Trigger running along shouting.
  19. If he gets a tenner a rabbit he's selling them to greyhound racers who haven't bothered to encourage their young pups to chase a lure. That's what makes his soft mouthed dog worth persisting with.
  20. IMHO you're looking at this from the wrong angle. Leave percentages of protein to chicken farmers and just feed a diet made from good quality ingredients and based on meat and bone rather than soya, peas etc.
