Any Bull Cross Litters Planned In Ireland
Maximus Ferret replied to WILF's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Have not seen any straight wheatonxgh come that size, good few about me and they all in the 14in catagory. Surely you mean 24"! I've never seen as small a first cross as 14" anyway. -
It's euros though Tomo. I tend to say quid out of habit, remembering the Irish Punt. Still better than a poke in the eye though.
-
Sometimes ferreted ones can be marked up too, mostly if the rabbit was hard to bolt. Mine mostly go to private customers for four quid each or fifteen quid for four.
-
If your dogs fairly soft mouthed then just skin and gut them as soon as you get back and then rinse and drop them in a tub of salt water (iced if possible) while you sleep. That'll sort out any small marks. I cut the carcasses in three before bagging and freezing and if one has marked back legs while another has marked ribs I just swap 'em over. The bag with the bruised bits gets marked with a big d (for dogfood) while the good bags are marked "RABBIT" and the date of freezing underneath.

He's looking well Thorny. My daughter wanted me to choose him instead of Kipsy when they were pups. How's he doing in the field these days?(Must be 4 years old heading for 5 in 2015) cheers mate his a cracking dog, im glad you didnt pick him. Yeah they are 5 this august. His not a bad lamping dog, perhaps a little to big and fast to be considered an out and out rabbit dog, but keeps himself busy enough. Cracking ferreting companion, positive marks, good round the needs and mops up most bolters. Holds his own as a daytime dog to. How about yours She's a handy enough lamping dog. She got a c -

Who's crabbing him Sailor? I know he's good. I've never seen him run myself but I've been told so by a very reliable friend of mine who know's his owner and has seen him run. As for matching him I'm not into matching and don't keep coursing dogs myself. Where I live there's no point but even when I lived near the fens I preferred to keep collie bred allrounders.

That would depend who you believe and what you mean by beat. I'm sure the bulldozer's a great coursing hound but some people certainly seem to feel the need to puff him up a lot.

that's it mate and bit of bull , in those dogs that getting good bags the proof in the pudding as they say just look at some of there posts. In some of them but not all by any means. Fuji's Don and MB's Kat are collie grey. Tomo's Venus has saluki blood but no bull blood. Jim's snipe had many good bags and no bull blood. Admittedly though, the collie bull greys of DL do very well. Think Kat has only little (beardie) collie in her Cheers, D. I stand corrected then. What's the rest of her breeding do you know? the dogs that got all the big bags = jim, above, and -

How To Train A Lurcher To Work With A Longnet?
Maximus Ferret replied to slipper's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
A bitch belonging my son chased a rabbit, full speed into a 4z longnet last winter. She burst right through the net, losing the rabbit in the process. Funny thing was, the hole she made was only about 6 inches square and the bitch is a 25 inch threequarter grey/collie -

These days I'd imagine a variable lamp with a good red filter would be a useful tool to get a dog quartering and beating in (in the dark). -
That's a hell of a lot of rabbits Tomo. I don't keep count but don't think I ever come anywhere near that. As long as I get enough for me, 5 ferrets, 4 dogs and whatever customers buy I'm happy. I sold 8 out the freeser to a guy last week and there seemed about the same left. I'll be ferreting later in the week and lamping as soon as it's reasonably dark again. Might have a look out early evening tonight and see how cloudy it is.

Best of luck with your pup. I'm certain you're going to enjoy it!!!

Park coursing wouldn't be my cup of tea but I won't debate the merits or otherwise of it. I do agree with JD however, that it will be gone sooner than people think. It's popular enough with country folk but it's an easy target and it's supporters do a poor job of garnering any support outside of their own community. When it's gone I guess the rest of us will carry on as always.

Cheers mate, has the one below him got any deerhound blood or is the coat purely from wheaton?
-
Lurcher 330, hows the dog in 1st pic bred? Is he straight deer/grey cross?

Smithfield , Tumblers....

Those were back in the 70's but there's really no reason to believe they were from a "genuine smithfield" either in my opinion.- 57 replies

Who Needs A Dog When Your As Fast As Me.
Maximus Ferret replied to a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I caught one between my legs one time. I was kneeling in front of the hole removing one from a net when a second one bolted. -

I've been told he had some good dogs in the 70's, back when he used to work them. These days they seem to cross allsorts into them. Even in the 70's it's doubtful that much of "drovers dogs" remained in them. The line might well still throw a few good ones but Geoff seems a perfect example of what can happen if you start believing your own bullshit. You could always ring him up for a chat and make your own mind up. -

No one owns and works one. There's no such thing. The smithfield collie died out years ago. -
So do I Gaffer but then I do like to see a muscled up racy smooth coated one too. Is the dog in the first pic the one you were thinking of selling recently? Fine looking animal.

Does he catch much Davey? I always liked chartpolski's bitch though she's obviously way too big and clumsy to be any good on rabbits .
