  1. I think that might have been mentioned a time or two . Great vid though. There's nothing quite like a mooch around on the tops.
  2. Couldn't agree more,Years ago lamped with a half bred terrier cross , no speed to talk about , worst feet I've ever seen and a short little terrier tail on it but game as f**k , caught most in or around the hedge , Wouldn't have swapped her for any fleet footed speed merchant A dog will find a way of catching to suit it's attributes if you throw enough work at it , Hmmm, I get what you're saying, but I disagree. In 90% of the places where we're from, unless you've got a 'fast' type, you're going home empty handed, day or night. Not wishing to argue, just saying as it is, and always has been
  3. If mine are close at hand I can call them off a hot scent if I spot the rising excitement quickly enough. Once they've spotted game and started off there's no chance. In some places I keep them close so I can make a quick decision on whether it's a good idea or not. The thing is in some places it's not convenient to have them on a lead as you have to pick your footing and sometimes need your hands too so it's good to have a bit of control.
  4. On the subject of nose, some rabbits stop just inside the darkness of the hedge. I like a dog that uses a combination of nose, eyes and ears to pluck these ones out. This type of animal will soon learn to peg squatters too.
  5. There's a selection here:- http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index.php?s=a11babcae39081b72a729cae64443f63&app=googlecse#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=rewire lightforce
  6. I seem to remember a thread a while back where Paulus explained how to drill out rivets and rewire.
  7. The above posts have pretty much said it all but I'd add that in future heats, if you have her well fit before she's due on and keep her exercised through it, the hormonal effect will be a little less of a problem.
  8. That looks a nice dog. Hows he bred and do you work him?
  9. I reckon they'll sell all those eventually Bunnys but I'm fairly sure they'll all go to people who want pets first and foremost, that look impressive and maybe catch the occasional rabbit. Hopefully they won't go into the gene pool of serious working shepherd types.
  10. Like the look of that dog in the 3rd pic how have you found them work wise? And whats in it? The bitch in the foreground is 1st cross deer/grey and the very dark brindle is a collie cross (from Hancock's). Workwise, the deer grey is a bit big for rabbits. She can fill a bag OK but not as quickly as the collie cross. She can catch the occasional hare when she gets the chance and when anything bigger gets up the odds are the other way round as my Hancock bitch is only 24 inches. Both will use their noses a bit too and I do a fair bit of daytime mooching about as well as the lamping.
  11. I reckon she'll make 25 inches at least.
  12. I used "Training the Roughshooter's Dog", by Peter Moxon, back in the 70's but it's a bit outdated these days. The advice on those vids is mostly spot on.
  13. I remember him now. You were in another incarnation then.
  14. I like those George. I've said it before but your area has as much game as anywhere I've ever been.
  15. An old one - we lived in poverty back then (still do unfortunately )This dog (a collie cross) was 9 years old and took these in 45 mins from going out the door to coming back in. More up to date, this is the collie cross I have now.
  16. So that's another option if the bitch turns out to be pregnant. Now it's up to her to decide what to do with her bitch. My wife had this done too, with a pet bitch. The vet said he didn't much like speying a pregnant bitch (messier to stitch or something) but he did it anyway and the bitch was fine.
  17. Is the dog being a bit over cautious around sheep a bad thing? I'd rather my dog went nowhere near them, better a bit too cautious than too interested imo. For the most part you're right but you don't want a dog that legs it back to the car every time it sees a sheep either.
  18. If he didn't tie with your bitch then the chances are that she isn't pregnant but maybe having a false pregnancy. If it's a falsy then she'll lose a little muscle tone for a week or two but it'll pass. If she is pregnant then it sounds like you're too late to have her injected anyway.(you need to do it soon after the mating). So if she has pups you've just got to deal with it and find them good homes. Don't take any notice of the slaggers on here. Half of them have probably had unplanned litters themselves. DO be more careful in future.
  19. If you want to throw me a few hundered quid you can walk threw my sheep as much as you want lol. Mine too... as soon as I can get some
