A few decent brownies and a very few salmon but on it's day it's a very good seatrout river. Where I live is quite high up the river so it depends on how much rain falls as to how many fish get here before the end of the season. It's a lovely deserted place to fish mostly, with otters, kingfishers, dippers, harriers.... all kinds of wildlife so even when I catch nothing it's a good place to spend a day.

Advice On Supplements After Breaks/fractures
Maximus Ferret replied to newcomer88's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Yes, it will. Calcium supplements are not necessary and aren't what's needed for balanced bone building. Bone consists of more than just calcium. As said above, something like chicken necks, which all dogs seem to love, is way better than any supplement and keeps teeth white too. -
Well put Optimus.

Here you are mate:- https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=suturing http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l2632.R2.TR6.TRC1.A0.H2.Xsuture+.TRS0&_nkw=suture+kit&_sacat=11815 Now I'm not saying this'll replace vets. Some folks will never have the dexterity to do this sort of thing but it's worth understanding what you pay your vet for and whether he's actually any good or not. PS. if you do get to where you might consider trying it, stick to small ones, no more than skin deep, and away from any moving parts (where legs meet body and skin stretch

Don't know if its any help Davey but I think youtube have some vids of stitching and ebay have practise stitching kits for medical students. If you buy a couple of pigs feet from your butcher or local foodmarket you can make slits in them to practise on. That'll get you started anyway, and then you'll need to learn about taking the hair off the edges of wounds after that. I'll have a look and see if I can find you some links.

I'd try an Ecollar first. If you're somewhere like the fens then you can run places with no sheep for miles but round here anywhere that has a few hares is usually lousy with sheep too. Having said that I rarely go after hares specifically but would never feel relaxed with a dog that I knew liked to kill sheep, even outside of sheep country.

I just re-read the post and saw that the dogs 18 months. I'd try the Ecollar if I was you but get advice from someone with experience of using one for that purpose first.

Is he saluki/bull/grey by any chance? Yes mate saluki, bull grey! How did you guess!? Your avatar pic looked like it might be. I've never owned one but My son had a pit that was very high energy as a young dog and I'd imagine that that combined with a saluki temperament might need careful stock breaking. Then again, any breed of lurcher can produce a pup which takes time to get properly steady with sheep. I'd say stick at it for a while before going with the E collar.

She'll come round in the end. Collie bred pups are often like it.

Lurcher Showing Does And Donts
Maximus Ferret replied to Natalie Rice's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
If both were going to the show it was probably just a convenient place to meet and get the job done. (It wasn't me by the way ) -
Best wishes and best of luck to the bitch Gaz, she's my favourite pup on here.

I believe JCM (could be wrong) of here has 2 of them and they look really handy crosses. It was GVC..... http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/334331-anyone-else-working-malinois-x-greyhounds-or-similar/

As above.... at that age it's more about learning than building muscle. Two miles free, walking and running over fields, through woods etc. isn't too much as long as the pup is enjoying it. Let it follow you through fences, over obstacles, through shallow streams and sniff at scents to it's hearts content. Occasionally give a whistle and when she looks up at you run off so she comes after you.

Lurcher Showing Does And Donts
Maximus Ferret replied to Natalie Rice's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Go to a show that's being judged by one of your friends. -
It was a good forum at one time but had gone very quiet there of late. I tried to log on about a week or so ago and it was gone. Guess he just got sick of running a forum where no one posted anymore.

There's no prizes for killing cats. Stockbreaking is a necessary part of training any lurcher and in my opinion it's best to train to ignore cats as much as to ignore sheep, cattle, horses, poultry etc. I have a cat and quite like them but even if you don't like cats yourself, killing someones pet can only cause unnecessary trouble. There are probably more threads on here about cat trouble than there are about sheep trouble. Both are avoidable .

There's a lot of truth in that. Anyone wanting a pup primarily as a worker wouldn't need to pay more than 500 for even the most expensive of the top working lines and if they waited and looked around, could probably find one for 200 or less. They'd be lucky to find a deerhound for 500 but then deerhounds aren't bred as workers, not really. I like deerhounds a lot and have a deerhound bred lurcher myself but have to say that I don't believe anyone breeds deerhounds primarily as workers anymore. Some people do work them but that's not the first reason they choose them.

Best Pic Of One Of Your Lurcher
Maximus Ferret replied to the big chief's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
In a PM to me on 7th April 2014 he said she was 19 months. That makes her about 8 months older than sadie. I'd forgotten about that one when you PM'd me. Here's mine cooling off in the bog after a run. Times like that you wish you had a dog trailer instead of the back of the car. -

Garmon Astro 320 + Dc Collar
Maximus Ferret replied to bullmastiff's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
If you buy them from new now they are already upgraded to the new frequency you have to down grade them sort of speak I had to and I had mine about 3 months ago !!But great bit of kit and keeps you in tune with the hunt when it's gone a long way out of sight !! But heart in mouth when you look at it and the dogs over 3kms away lol What kind of a job is it to downgrade them mate. How do you do it? -
that's what I do the ban has never affected me and if the truth is known it hasn't affected the biggest part of running dog men atb I'm not sure about that Malc, just think about it. Before the ban, how many people got their car crushed, livelyhood destroyed, banned from an area, put on house arrest with an ankle band, dogs destroyed etc?????? It's not just fen coursers either. In some areas you've only got to switch on a lamp to have a "swat team" appear, even if you're on permission. How many would have even thought about ringing the police station for an incident number before going la

Is the sire your dog? Deer/grey by saluki/grey? Or am I getting mixed up here. He's a fine looking hound anyway and a useful size. My own deer/grey bitch is 29 at the shoulder and a bit big at that to be really good on rabbit. She'll catch a bagful of them but misses way more than my collie/grey bitch does.(makes up in other ways though) If you get a chance could you post a pic of the pup taken sideways on and with the camera at the height of his shoulder please. I'd be very interested to see how his conformation is. Cheers and best of luck in the coming season.
