  1. There may be dogs descended from a Doxhope hound, but as Omanyra say's Doxhope hasn't bred a litter since 2005. He should know. Out of interest, who bred yours and from which two Doxhope hounds?
  2. I think you did the best thing getting her to the vet as fast as possible. With a bit of luck she should hopefully recover. How's your shirt?
  3. Mine run some very rough ground at times and I consider it essential that pups get regular walks over rough ground pretty much from the time I get them. Fences, ditches, streams, mountain slopes, woodland etc too. Now I'm not advocating running young pups at game over this kind of ground but if they learn to get over it from the time they're pups, they're much less likely to hurt themselves when running as adults.
  4. No farmer wants a plague of rabbits but most round here don't mind a few. Same with foxes as it's dairy country so they're not too much bother. Twenty miles North or west you're in sheep country and they hate them there.
  5. The farm at the back of my house is one I restocked and did it in conjunction with the landowner. He keeps coursing greyhounds and likes to have rabbits on his land. I had overhunted it a bit and numbers were low so we went to a farm belonging to a pal of his and ferreted a few. After we released the ferreted rabbits the population shot up and even now, 10 years later, I can nearly always get a run or two without walking too far. Obviously if I want to bag up I go further afield.
  6. IMO it's worth dropping them from more than one source. When you do, or when you drop one or two of fresh blood in a low populated spot, the population often seems to take off with a bang. Hybrid vigour maybe???
  7. That's a nice bit of rural England Gaz. Does the saluki cross tend to wander a bit far ahead?
  8. I'd agree with her about that last photo Bird, I think it's the best of those three - bit of character.
  9. Get on the case and undercut their rabbit supplier. I was getting £1 a rabbit 30 YRS ago.. if every body that sells their rabbits all put the price up at onceyou could get at least £2.50 a rabbit, they are worth that all day long to any restaurant, would you agree.. We have been getting this for over 30yrs mate if I asked 1.50 were I live they would have a fecking heart attack.but I know what ya mean but for the aggravation I would rather fill my own freezer as I've worked hard for it.but like you say they should be £2.50 the butchers charge £6+ And have no problem at that price. What

What you need to do is find customers buying for their own us
  11. I like the bottom one Hawkins. Looks like it could go a bit.
  12. When you say 2 collie/bull/greys do you mean 2 working together? Personally I can't see a 25 inch dog stopping a mature red stag single handed. If I'm wrong then I stand corrected but for singlehanded surely it would need a bit of weight and also a bit of speed.
  13. Most red stags are a bit smaller than that. As for the Picardy cross, you don't say what it's crossed with. I imagine that a Picardy crossed with a deerhound or deerhound cross, or even one of the bigger types of coursing dog, could produce some tall strong animals with plenty of grit.
  14. Spill the beans then Jok. True or false???
  15. How does your deer/bull cross do over bits like that boulder pile Dai? Can he run on it OK? (When I say run, obviously I mean travel )
  16. I've put in a lot of likes on this thread because those out of the way places are a bit special for me. Here's some of mine.
  17. They get the idea across though - education rather than entertainment - basic training and entering broken down into easy parts. If they'd been around years ago, when I was starting off, they'd have made a steep learning curve a bit easier. That's why I post the links when anyone asks.
  18. Bang on again Irishhunter. Most farmers round here are fine and I find it easy to avoid those bits of land where farmers don't want dogs on. As long as I try to avoid running among livestock I've had very little bother. I do start early in some places but choose them carefully.
  19. You're dead right pal. When you live in rural Ireland it's easy to imagine there aren't many antis but Ireland becomes more urban and more anti everyday. Greyhound industry or not, sooner or later coursing will be banned and pissing the farmers off could be the last straw.
  20. He's a nice looking dog Gaffer, I always liked the look of him, but for 350 sterling I'd be wanting him to do more than just rabbits or foxes either for that matter. The fact that you were selling him before, after breeding pups makes it look like he's your cast off. Maybe find him a decent pet home if possible? I genuinely hope he gets a good home anyway. Best of luck with it.
