A wider spread is definately safer for the dog doing the running and with the blitz you can adjust the beam to exactly what you need. What's the guarantee like on this one Dave? Also, how does it compare to the blitz for visibility? I have trouble spotting rabbits in the very white beams of most LED's and the figures quoted on beam colour mean nothing to me without seeing the beam in action. It's all very well seeing the beam at 1000 km but can you pick out a rabbit at the same distance as with a blitz?

I used to charge 25 euro if I remember right. It was a while ago that I bred last and that was the going rate. I stopped keeping and breeding as I wasn't ferreting much but since I've a young pup on (8 months) I'd like to get one so he knows they are not fair game. Did you come across many from working lines?
-
Both but I was thinking of the breeding season more than anything. Stags of sika and red are out of season here after end of february here. Edited to say stags out of season here end of December and hinds end of February.

5 days at the end of april??? Anyone night shooting deer at the end of april deserves to be caught but with all that tackle they saw no-one and wasted all that time and money.

Probably their own uncle too LOL.

How're they bred Craigo? I'm guessing the pup's collie/bull/grey.

Maybe a week or two at a guess. If you do dry it without salt it needs to be kept in a dry place, even when dried or it'll go moldy but if kept dry it'll be fine. Sheep skins, deer skins etc. the same. Try to remove fleshy and bloody bits off the back by scraping carefully with the back of a knife. I once had a sheepskin as a bedside rug for over a year before a mates dog ate it while we were at the pub. If you want to get it tanned don't salt it. If you want to try curing it yourself https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Skillkult+tanning+skins

Me too but without the salt.

I haven't got one but could show you a side on photo of a deer/grey if that's any good? You'll see leg length and back. -

Bet they knocked a few roe too. I used to live in your area back in the early 80's and the whole area seemed to be hopping with them back then. -

I've seen some right funny looking deerhound saluki/greyhound ones and some very nice ones from the same breeding too.? Deerhound/collie/grey do seem to blend well though and people have been breeding them for a long time now. -

not many people mention this about deerhound in a cross but it adds a long back to a collie cross and this gives it a better stride for covering rough ground (like rocky, heathery places). It also can give a steady temperament but a GOOD collie cross should have this anyway. Length of leg and size as many collie crosses, especially the bitches can turn out 22 to 23 inches and IMHO that's too small for a real RHFD dog. I do like collie crosses though and I've had more of them than anything else over the years so I know what I'm talking about. I own a deer/grey ATM and she's the s- 34 replies

Coursing Dogs / Saluki Dogs On Deer??
Maximus Ferret replied to deerdogs's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I see what you're saying Poxon and I have seen a small dog take roe and I mentioned fallow only as some of the earlier conversation mentioned them. Personally I'd still try and choose a reasonably tall and strong dog if I wanted deer to be part of it's job. Over rough ground I believe a good springy saluki or deerhound type bounding stride makes for less injuries too. -

On the subject of mature fallow bucks though, I've never known of a fine 21 inch type animal able to take them down. Even sika stags are trouble for small finely built dogs. -
Genuinely very sorry to hear that NL.. I don't have beddy crosses and never have but I really like yours. As Bird says, hope the bitch pulls through OK.

I like the look of that. ATB with her.

Tricky one to advise on. The vets over here will sell you things through the door so you could buy the vacc and do it yourself. Is it possible to find one there that would do the same? Personally I take my pups out before the vacc has taken effect but I go by car to somewhere where I won't meet other dogs. It's still a risk of course ( foxes or strays might have been by) but I take the risk as I run some very rough ground at times and want the pup to grow up running on it as early as possible so it's a risk I take. Hope it all works out for you mate.

If they hadn't finished this lockdown would probably have finished them anyway or left them with a load of litters to PTS.

TBH I don't know why anyone bothers with these pointless drawn out arguments on here. There's nothing to be gained form it and plenty to lose for some.
