Love a flatcap! Unfortunately I've killed every tweed one I've ever owned by not looking after them. They shrink! My waxed cotton one hasn't though. Think I've a pair of cords somewhere too.

That's good to hear. I've only got a stoney creek puffer and I like that. I'd be interested in their waterproof jacket but I don't like the length of it personally. I've heard good stuff about them too though. I think I'm going to buy a pair of their overtousers in a couple of months but I'll buy in NZ where it works out much cheaper.

https://www.stoneycreekhunting.co.uk/ https://www.swazi.co.nz/mens Im sure there are a few more but by the sounds of it rain proofing isn’t your main concern. Deerhunter might well be just the job for you, I don’t doubt it’s well made stuff and it’s warm and reasonably priced.

You want long jackets look into the kiwi brands. Was just talking about exactly that this afternoon. I like a short, bomber style I guess, jacket. So long as it has eleaticated waist to keep draft out. In fact I won’t buy one that hangs round my arse. Loads of choice you’re right. There’s no right one because we all value different things.

I wish I had taken a decent picture of one of my beaters shorthair bitch pup that he brought for the last shoot day, just for a look on an informal day. Hes got her in fantastic condition and she’s a real doggy bitch. I hope he gets her to standard because I’ll very much enjoy shooting over her with him on a rough day. Also seen some nice continental breeds today at jagd und hund show in Germany. No decent pics again though.

I do tend to look for quite different stuff to most it seems. Lol.

https://www.northernhunting.com/en/13-jackets Saw this stuff for the first time and was quite impressed on initial inspection. It felt tough as f**k and nicely cut and styled. Reasonably priced too. I almost wanted to be in need of a jacket to justify the expense. Lol Probably shit waterproofing for the price but equally has a five year warranty! So maybe not....

I might have misunderstood you then, I was just pointing out that quality remains in all the top gundog breeds. In their respective fields they are all the masters of that trade. If by quality you mean general health then I dunno in honesty. Any of them would work into double figures, so beyond that I’m not sure I’d care too much. Everyone comments on how classy shorthairs are but I’m not convinced they’re any more ‘top quality’ than a spaniel or lab or whatever. Difficult to compare really I suppose.

@mackem @Ted Newgent Just taking five now. Had a chat with the kuiu lads and tried a few bits on. This is the Yukon jacket, I like the stuff as you know. But even the fella I spoke to said it’s not meant for smashing through woodland/thorns. But basically ideal for hill stalking. Fairly baggy tbh but that’s because it’s meant as a top layer, over puffer etc. Sorry I haven’t many pics. The equivalent offering from Sitka felt more robust. It was much shorter finishing literally at my hips though which I wasn’t keen on. Deerhunter stuff is more heavy duty but again I personally hav

Pointers just look better because they have thin coat and a really classy gait when quartering a field. A good labs coat has real depth for protection against ice cold water so it hides the true form a bit. id agree labs are probably more prone to look shit but there’s plenty of quality in all the top gundog breeds. As you say, dogs for jobs. Some jobs just make for a more eye catching animal.

The main line to Nottingham, or the old one that run south to north? It was around 10 years ago I remember contractors ferreting the main line as a result of a collapse apparently. I was ferreting a garden near by when a landowner stopped to ask if I was part of that crew and then offered me some more permission.

I used to ferret around Bottesford a lot. The old railway lines held enough to sicken me of rabbits. Was great fun when I had a few other keen lads. Likewise, elsewhere in the vale we had some fantastic nights lamping with our lurchers. There were places suited to lamping, places suited to ferreting with nets, places suited to bolting to gun and others suited to walked up bushing with terrier to shotgun. It's all pretty much f****d now. Glad I experienced a bit of the good days rabbiting though. But I think that's the bottom line with bolting to gun. If that's what you wan

Anyone put the drains directly in front of the bed box? So between the run and the beds. I've seen this done before and it made doing kennels in the morning quick and easy compared to drains at the front of the pens. It's more convenient to hose or chuck a bucket of water in from the pen door, than from inside out, likewise with sweeping. It just requires the bed floor to be raised by a course of block or few course of brick so the water doesn't slosh straight over the open gutter/drain. Just one of those innovative things you notice when around other lads kennels and stick in the me

I know of a land owner who charges the tenant for the same acres of land that he charges the keeper for cover crops! Both parties have come to the conclusion it's not worth the hassle sorting it out. All can be a pain in the arse and overstep, including landowners who have sold sporting rights.
-
I don't much like labs full stop so my opinion doesn't count for a great deal but I've observed that there's next to none in the field compared with blacks and yellows and I can't ever recall seeing a choc (pet or worker) that I thought had nice conformation.

Thinking about it, if I was doing it professionally for client Guns then I'd probably use sticks/flags to show safe arcs of fire. Similar concept to grouse butts but rather than being physical barriers to gun swing they would be more visual markers either side of the warren to make it absolutely clear where guns are not to be pointed. Maybe even wear some blaze orange/blue so you're more visible in a Guns peripheral when swinging. If you know your Guns, you're likely safe. It's when you don't or they're inexperienced shit can happen.

Bet she still gets reelected!

Worth it for a Pronghorn!
-
It's great sport. I'd love to get a couple hobs again just for this but not worth the hassle keeping ferrets considering the rabbit numbers past few years. One rule, don't be swinging on anything until it's well clear of the warren. Personally I was quite happy to stand by the warren, rather than behind guns. Made working the ferrets easier. If I didn't trust the guns not to shoot me then I wouldn't really be happy to trust them not to shoot my ferrets. But everyone I ferreted with I knew personally. Not guests or clients.

Trick is to skin the breast meat. Tastes fine from memory. Skin makes it bitter.
