Makes sense. Despite this alleged incident the threat of being shot down will be greatly diminished so they’ll be resting the high end newer airframes as much as practical.
-
Reports of a us jet being shot down over Iran and video of search and rescue aircraft in the sky. US are denying it.
-
Power consumption for a video feed would cost a lot more and provide nothing more in value. Even if it was done to pacify people like you, you’d then just claim it was bollocks.

Google… lol.
-
Where? That camera is nearly a million miles away, lol.
-
Nah, for a while that was true but once we got telescopes at the Lagrangian points we had them far enough away in a steady orbit to enable their cameras to view the earth in one image. Here, https://epic.gsfc.nasa.gov/

What do you mean ‘real time’? Telescopes at the Lagrangians photograph the whole earth daily as far as I’m aware.

The first part about politicians I agree with but that is just part of being allies. It’s not a one way street there. The second point, where do I start. In fact wwii is a great start, the us wanted nothing to do with the war in Europe until they got f****d by the japs. Not the American politicians or the public. In fact that sounds an awful lot like the situation we’re in here! They became a supplier of equipment which on the face of it was ally like but let’s not forget charged us handsomely for it! None the less we were greatful. They continued this form even when we were as close as w

Most oil is privately sold to the global market. When there is a global shortage that pushes the price up for everyone. Even the Americans are paying silly prices at the pumps and they have more than they can use. This is the reality of privately owned global industry. If people want that to not be the case then you need a nationalised domestic oil industry. Which would most likely be shit the other 99% of the time.
-
Almost all of our oil imports come from Norway and the us. But yeah the us are not proving to be good allies.

Tbf it’s not released anymore carbon than a flight to LA.

As if we needed any more evidence for how f****d NATO is than that cock sucker Mark Rutte leading it.
-
That’s a fair point but during Bosnia were all NATO members expected to contribute? Or was it just a case of a NATO force/command of willing nations? Which makes a lot of sense as NATO is probably the most prepared structure for commanding a multinational force. But on this theme I think, as usual, Trumps messaging here has been terrible. There was no need to even mention NATO, he simply needed to say “our European allies”, and he would’ve avoided all the counter arguments of NATO being defensive and frankly got to the point.
-
Yeah I’m not challenging that bit. But is he forced to militarily react as he is the commander of the military not congress. So, Russia attacks Estonia/UK, art 5 is invoked, but POTUS says “yeah bad luck”. Ultimately I wonder what congress could do in that situation? I wonder what the rest of NATO could do… I suspect in both instances, not a lot.
-
That’s interesting. But the military is solely under the command of the executive right? So if the president says he’s out then the US is de facto out of NATO. I believe the US can only declare war with congressional approval but actual command of the forces lies with the exec’ but I could be wrong. Also that declare war thing seems meaningless given how easily it is flaunted using the war powers resolution.

Starmer was on the verge of getting booted after the Mandelson stuff, he was f****d. Then the war happened and it was an absolute gift horse. Its single-handedly saved him, pushed us closer to the EU, destroyed NATO and driven us into an economic crisis. It’s probably f****d what was a growing and credible right wing movement too as people see MAGA as actually as hawkish and pro foreign influence as any previous government. For someone who’s been banging on about rising powers threatening the US led world order for literally years, this feels like the US’/NATOs suez crisis imo.
-
Reflecting on the war so far, it feels like this was a gift for Starmer and the Labour Party just when all hope seemed gone. I don’t think the UK has done well in all this but that is due to decades of military decline, but given the cards he was dealt it feels like how he's played this has boosted his standing with the public. And he’ll probably get away with playing his part in furthering the decline.

No coincidence we’re once again entering an era of multipolar global power contest and “we’re” going back to the moon, like we did the last time the world had two superpowers contesting for hegemony. Key difference this time is that dominating space is more than just optics/perception, it’ll be a driver for technology that gives a real competitive advantage.

Not as high profile as that but I spent a relatively short time working for a company that carried out pipeline inspection, specifically a novel type with their own product. The one thing that job did leave me with was a real sense of how huge the energy industry is in the midstream. Topical here, I visited the teeside oil terminal to do some product testing, which receives crude by NORPIPE. I expect one of those Iranian cluster bomb ballistic missiles would be ideal for shutting that place down!
-
Just to add to the pipeline discussion. I’m not sure a pipeline anywhere is particularly useful. The pipeline itself can be attacked but even if buried I would think the refineries and other network nodes would act as choke points which would be taken out with ballistic missiles to the same affect as shutting the SoH. The best defence against this is diversifying our energy supply. North Sea, fracking, renewables, nuclear. Whatever makes sense should be considered and based firmly on national security rather than ideology.
-
The pipeline comes out in the middle of Saudi well above Yemen. The Houthi’s tried to shut down the Al mandap/aden area for the past several years and failed. Suez is an accepted cost globally already so wouldn’t be a problem and Saudi is a stable country. A new pipeline through one of the most troubled areas in the world is a non starter.
-
There’s already a pipeline straight across Saudi. It would make infinitely more sense to just increase the capacity of that.
-
Can’t bring myself to watch it.

This definitely isn't going to cause us any lasting problems. I wonder what Iran will need to ensure deterrence from now on? I wonder how allowing Iran to keep control of the strait will change the mindset of the Chinese war planners and leaders? In the same way the myth of the Russian bear evaporated when they jacked before Kyiv, the Chinese will be feeling emboldened by this fiasco.

I’m not moving the goalposts, I said “I bet you think I silencer makes a rifle silent” so go and google silent
