It was a hot old day back in June 2006,...a long old trip from Hampshire, to that remote farm in rural Wales. We had come, armed with a brace of ex-racing greyhounds, no world beaters, but steady enough gals. The chosen stud was a flame red, working sheepdog,..calm and confident, a grand example of his type, just as it should be. Big difference in size and height twixt the greyhound and the collie, but we managed the job...eventually... The resulting progeny went all over the UK, but I only ever got to see one at work., and what a good honest worker she was. It is a

Most steel traps, .especialy good traps,..can never be cheap,...I've lived through decades of folk whinging about someone else, having an earner... It is, what it is...

Give the Gin a light brushing, (don't go mad), then soak it with a nice juicy spray of WD40...it will look great... As an aside,..my Father, Grandfather and myself, used Gins for rabbit trapping....hell of a trap...

I'm the same,... I just like grabbing a 50 yd job, and running a few sets along the shoreline. There is usually a good breeze coming off the sea and I've got some dead cert crossing places, that invariably get me a dozen for the dog freezer. That does me, I ain't greedy...

4z is a great net for them dark nights.

Looks to be a strong sort...

Mouching, wandering, and raking about, is good training for keen young dogs, and keen young men. Sad thing is, part of me thinks that sooner, rather than later,.due to our grossly, over-governed Island,..a bit of roustabout rabbit hunting, might be all that is left...

I think with all Herding types, be they Borders, Beardies or their Antipodean cousins,...its best to only use those examples that are of good temperament... To breed a steady critter, that does not exhibit foolish, manic behavior,..it is favorite, to choose your base stock carefully,..very fecking carefully...
-
I like both breeds,..in fact, considering how few rabbits I actually catch with my wee, hedge busters, a purebred Herder would probably suit my needs.

Don't really know the exact mathematical percentages,..probably not even as much as yours... I have found,..over the years, that Mother Nature doesn't really abide by the rules of percentages, but seems to do her own thing. What I look for, when I breed a litter comprised of Whippet, Sheepdog, Greyhound genes, is an individual whelp that exhibits the qualities I desire. Sometimes I win, other times I lose,..but I am getting much better at observing such things... I'll get it right someday...

Nice sort of thing Troyboy...and a perfect visual example of the type,...but as I say,... I prefer a lot more Sheepdog influence in my rabbiting curs. Possibly not to everyone's taste,.I just like them to have that quicksilver basic obedience and amazing collie sagacity... I don't really need, out and out speed,..in fact, I find it a wee bit dangerous, when hunting in woodland, embankments, factory wastelands, etc.. Just enough, will suffice, eh...
-
Real typical example there Troyboy... As an aside,...I've never been overly keen on the genuine first cross twixt Whippet/Collie to produce a lurcher. For hedgerow work, I've always favored a mix that contains the Collie, Whippet, and Greyhound, as opposed to a straight FX. When I've bred these types closely, they usually seemed to level out fairly evenly... Obviously, to achieve a starting point the FX is necessary,..but personally, I like to quickly move on and hopefully improve on that initial hybridization. at the earliest opportunity. No set rules for lurchers...and

Night netting provides a special buzz, you can literally walk by night,.... any old fecking where ya likes...

That example is about the nearest to a genuine Collie x Whippet that has been posted.

Those small to medium sized hunters,...created from a Whippet /Collie and Greyhound mix, are often just right, for the hedgerow rabbiting...

The Deerhound/Greyhound/Collie combination is a real favorite of mine... I've bred and used them in the past,..never had a problem with them picking up rabbits... Obviously, you want them out early,.14 weeks or so,.wandering around the warrens and learning to negotiate ditches, woodland brash, etc,..and let them learn how to work their quarry,..use their gears,..and agility... If you allow big dogs to turn into stiff old straight liners,..they will do so... Nice hybrids, .. it is all over for me now, but I've still got great memories of walking by night with them...
