  1. If your standard is high , try and get a Collie that can turn a cow with a calf. Thats as good as you get in the sheepdog world.
  2. It's very hard for a hunting person (especially someone with a terrier) to put down poison but at the end of the day it's the only way to deal with a rat problem quickly.
  3. McDonalds book is very good. Is it that book that states that the average lifespan of the Fox is 18 months? This is what I was always lead to believe. To be honest Neil I cant remember its years since I read it. I read somewhere that all the foxes used in McDonalds research were dug by terriermen........... I think you could be right there as I think he said he was grateful to terriermen for their help. I have a book here written in the 70s by a Zoologist J.S. Fairley. It's called "An Irish beast book." In it nearly all the foxes and otter he worked on were obtained from hunter
  4. A good chain and swivel with 10' pin on the end. I buy a cheap poker and cut a few inches of it. A terrier pegged out in the field can't hang it's self and is easier to keep an eye on.

  6. IMO a well minded Magpie in a larson really earns it's keep. Another thing I find is to use a large water cup as they love washing themselves. I've noticed a lot of lads don't use there traps in the Winter. I find in the hard weather Magpies and Greycrows travel more in search of food and will leave their territory and will find your trap. In the harsh spell of weather in the Winter just gone I took 10 greycrows with one trap in a week. 5 in the one day. I put raw meat in the catching compartments of the trap. At one stage there were 2 greycrows in the trap and 2 more waiting to get in.
  7. Seen a man enter a terrier at 6 months once. This terrier worked 'till the day it died. He shot it at 9 months when it came away.
  8. Barny williams in the north lakes it was his ridgeback/ pit bull/grey to a three quarter pit bull/ grey Would I be right then in saying that the dog is around 1/8 Ridgeback then????? If so is that not misleading????? Should that dog not be described as a APBT cross with a dash of Ridgeback and not a straight up Ridgeback cross???? Already there's lads looking at that fine animal and saying they're going to breed from their Ridgeback bitches.
  9. You did that rabbit a favour. He'd have starved to death otherwise.
  10. Things are good Ko Shamo. Would it be that its pullets I've got and not hens. They're the lovely white birds I got of Stevie.
  11. Any of you had success with your Ko Shamos hatching their own eggs? I was talking to a chicken man yesterday who has a life time in fowl and he was moaning about his Ko Shamos laying all over the pen instead of in a clutch. Mine are at this too. My own were hatched in an incubator.
  12. Personally I think if you kept your fowl in the Bank vault in the Bank of England a fox would get in and kill them. Human hair and piss doesn't work. Chicken wire can be bitten through. Fences can be dug under and jumped over. A friend of mine keeps his fowl in an enclosure with buried wire and a seven foot fence. Outside of this he has a double strand electric fence.Beside this enclosure are his greyhounds. He doesn't seem to loose fowl to the fox. Mind you, last Friday night he lost most of them to a Pine Marten.
  13. Everyone seems to agree on the Silkie Sussex cross. The Silkie being a great mother but crossed with the Sussex gives a bigger hen thus covering more eggs. Bantams tend to only cover a few eggs. Personally I like a game hen as they can make a very aggressive ,protective mother. Handy if you've vermin around.
  14. I'd go with one of the thrush family too judging by the nest and beaks on the chicks. The blueish colour in the wing comes from the blood filled new feather quills. Nice to see.
  15. Last year I put mine in screw top Vodka bottles with no problems. The sup I had left I put in a 2 litre fizzy drinks bottle and caught it just as it was about to explode. As I transfered it to another bottle I lost half it. Luckily I've a friend who's fond of her Smirrnoff Ice and she saves me the bottles.
  16. Fair Game the only way of working a dog that I've critisised is using dogs of any kind to fight badgers over ground. Thats if you can call that work. I call it bullshit. The other critisism I made is about those that have been using their own boastings and photos on the net to enhance their own egos. It's these actions that's caused the reason trouble. SIMPLE AS THAT. Now if anyone wants to stick up for all the foolishness thats causing decent lads to loose their terriers and feel like criminals then they're fools too. The bottom line is that good terriers are going to get killed and good
  17. While I agree Liam about the fighting spirit of our Northern Ireland fellow sportsmen I disagree about it being only small fry. The first man to be raided last Saturday is a fox hunting man but that fame seeking dictator Phillpot (or as his workmates call him "Potfill") has taken this mans foxhunting dogs and pet staff. Phillpot over the last year has emptied the North of pit bull type dogs and yes ,some of them belonged to illegal dog fighters. A lot on the other hand didn't. Phillpot has publicly said that he'll empty the North of terriers. And this murderer will try. The Countryman to h
  18. Yep another good one. I love the picture of the lurcher catching the bolting rabbit.
  19. I remember feeding calves for a farmer I worked for. They were Holstein Freisens out of a Canadian sire who was ten years dead.
  20. Mr Tyson judged a show over here a good few years back. A friend was talking to him at the show when a youngster came along very keen for Cyril to see the fresh scars on his terrier. They tried to ignore the pest as best they could. "Look where my terrier got bitten" said the pest. "I suppose he f*****g cried" snapped Cyril. The pest left them alone.
  21. Would you's prefare the man does what most lads do and say "100% single handed" ?
  22. Goldfinch mule is hard to beat but it must have the finch song.
  23. Is she kept in a well lit area or a shed with lights? Hunting yesterday I saw signs of rabbits breeding.
  24. And didn't Mr Booth once say he bred Smithy, I wonder has he any straws of him too, LOL.
