  1. The Wolfhound that you read about in myth and legend is in fact extinct. The Wolfhound of today was recreated by crossing Scottish Deerhounds and ( I think ) some of the larger breeds. So to think that the Wolfhound was ever a worker is to fool yourself. Wasn't there a Wolfhound coursing club started a few years back ???? It was remarked that when the Wolfhound did manage to reach it's hare that it then had no desire to kill it. Hardly the killer of wolves. Mind you, I'd imagine a 1/4 Wolfhound 3/4 Greyhound would do well in a show, if that was your thing.
  2. It's a very sad sign of the times that a dog man has to worry about his house being visited/raided if he brings his worker to the vet. If a vet is out of the question (and a vet is the best advice you've been given) use a magnifying glass to examine the eyeball and make sure there's no foreign bodies in the cut. Use an eye wash that comes in a small bottle with a tight nozzle so pressure can be used to squirt dirt out. Have an antibiotic in the terrier and used cloth or carpet as bedding not straw or shavings. A mild pain killer might stop the terrier having to scratch. As has been said ther
  3. Within reason Mucky Paws. While the often silly questions asked by novices do no harm the photos and details often put up by those that should know better does much harm.
  4. LOL if only true accounts of hunting were put up on the forum it would be one quiet forum. Personally I'd rather see "what type makes the best ratter?" than "look at the blood on my terrier and the little pokey hole we pulled him out of ,wink wink."
  5. I wouldn't have bred many lurchers but I do know that in the "good ol' days" when the collie cross was nearly the only cross bred that many good dogmen prefared to use a collie bitch to a greyhound stud. They said the offspring came racier.
  6. fox hunter and daughter i'd watch what your putting on a public forum mate. They do say there's one born every minute. Sadly that sort of crap brings attention to the site as a whole and it mightn't be the fools who get in trouble but some poor bugger will. No wonder there's a lot of good dogmen wont come on here.
  7. If it's shape, size and muscle you want in the cross wouldn't a pure greyhound or a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 bull be a better option. The reason you cross a greyhound with another breed for a lurcher is for drive and hunting ability / instinct. A doberman possess neither. As for collies and pit bulls, they're full of drive and hunting instinct. Silly crosses are one of the reasons dogs homes are full of lurchers, JMHO.
  8. Foxes love bogs and marshy places. Plenty of picking for them and they'll find a raised sod to make their bed. IMO when you find a fox to ground in a wet spot though it's because you've unknowingly put him to ground.
  9. I've seen a couple and they were heavily marked from rat bites. I know that a couple of years ago there was a study being done on feral populations in Co. Fermanagh.
  10. An easy question to answer, 1. There's a lot of money to be made, 2. There's that much shit being bred that good dogs are hard to come by, hence there's a ready market for working dogs, 3. IMO 99% of dog men wont ask or are happy to believe a story of where the dog came from, 4. A high per centage of dog men turn a blind eye to the fact a dog might be stolen, 5. The amount of dogs being sold, swapped and changing hands makes a constant flow of unfortunate dogs doing the merry-go-round that makes it easy to part with a stolen dog, and 6. Sadly the terrier and lurcher game seems to attrac
  11. After a lot of rain you'll often see the heron hunting in a ditch or pasture as the river are swollen and dirty. Like most predators he's an opportunist and an efficient killer.
  12. Just after having this, nice and the kids loved it.
  13. Firstly I'd recommend you get a ferret finder, when minded they work out cheap in the long run. Saves on digging, rabbits and lost ferrets. To find a ferret wearing a bell it was a combination of the bar and your ear. Simple as that. My ferrets used to stay with a blocked rabbit a lot longer than a dead one, as a result I've no doubt we left dead rabbits behind us. Something that doesn't happen with the locator.
  14. For the little bit of ferreting I do nowadays I prefare mid morning. Too early and the rabbits are still sitting out, will see you and are harder to bolt. As the boys said you'd want to be wrapping up early afternoon unless you know the burrows your doing very well.
  15. In Ireland ,North and South, it is perfectly legal to kill a fox using hounds or a firearm. Snareing and trapping are also legal.
  16. I used to use bells on an elastic collar that I made myself. Being elastic they used to slip over the ferrets head when snagged. I found the bell helped bolt the rabbit too as the rabbit would be on the move well in front of the ferret. Another advantage of the elastic was the speed you could change collars on your own. Although I did have to have different collar sizes for Hobs and Jills. The only time I seen them clog was when the rabbit blocked and the bell clogged with hair. Another downside was that ferret couldn't slip through the net with out pulling the net down. As you bent down to p
  17. I wouldn't say them all but yes, a lot of them, LOL.
  18. If you have found russells that suit your kind of terrier work then hold on to them or you might regret it.
  19. The perfect tool for de-fanging a dog is a brow thyne cut to about 4 or 5 inches long. It's the perfect shape and keeps your fingers away from trouble.
  20. Valium ???? Flyfishing for a beginner can be very frustrating but worth it in the end.
  21. The only possible place you could have seen a Yorkie is on the end of a lead, probably with a coat on it to protect it from the cold. Now think about the job a working terrier has to do. Now think long and hard about the stupid question you asked and you'll probably find the answer.
