Like all the Irish breeds of terrier the Irish was just a rough and tumble, gamey (I didn't say game) type of terrier. A bit of vermin control by ways of hunting badgers and otters and keeping the fox away from the hens as well as a guard and farm dog was what the poor Irish peasant wanted in a single dog instead of keeping a few. Fiery specimens were probably used for a bit of light hearted dog fighting against other local dogs. But as for being specialist hunting dogs. Never. Like all Irish breeds they were Jack of all trades, but master of none. The Wheaten only became a type with a role

To those that know, what was the traditional role of the Irish terrier???

Yep seen the dead beasts in the yard and seen up to 30 lurchers, terriers and wheatens all running loose on his yard. But I do know some of the most competitive dog men out there go only to P.K. for their dogs including John K. for many years who keeps some of the best. Nobody mentioned him. Also heard of the video made of his yard many years ago where it showed a bitch after whelping down the field in a natural burrow. I would be amazed if his dogs nowadays have a drop of Irish Terrier in them. Incidently when his dogs were Irish terrier and Wheaten crosses they were amongst the best then

Hedgehogs seem to be thriving around here this year with the wet Summer suiting them. I had Hedgehogs 6 mornings in a row in a fox trap a few weeks ago. Released alive of course.

Those countries that do have the larger Quail species do seem to rate them as a sporting bird. I've eaten Quail and they're tasty, small but tasty. Their eggs are nice too and to breed them for your own table wouldn't be a waste of time.

Should there not be a comma between "riding" and "you" ????

surely one of Britains finest,,...

No doubt about it one of our most beutiful birds. -
The Quail thats kept in aviaries tend to be Chinese Painted Quail. It's believed that if you have C.P.Q. in your aviary you wont have mice, LOL. I wish. Actually looking for some Quail myself for my aviary.

A long shot but with all the wet weather we're having you might get him to ground to bolt him with a terrier.

Squeeze a cut lemon over the skin and inside of your trout. Season the trout and stuff with a few herbs. Then wrap the trout in a few streaky rashers and bake in a pre-heated oven. Lovely.

Are Quail not Summer migrants ?

Someone Had Fun Last Night
neil cooney replied to glass22's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
To remove pests from the farmers farm is this mans first priority. With a bit of searching he could probably find a use for his rabbits. If your picking up early in the morning fly damage should be prevented. Often the arguement that we are harvesting a free healthy food source is used to justify our killing of game. To say we throw it in the ditch is damaging. Over here we have the problem of pigeon shooters throwing their birds into a ditch. Often in their 100s. Photos of this crop up in the press now and again. Anyways, I'm very suspicious of someone who says they knows how to set a snar -
I've seen a pure Wheaten come with a putty nose 20 years after English Bull was put in the line and I know of a couple of families of black terriers that throw some white pups many generations after Sealyham was used.

If thats the way they hunt in their country, so be it. Mind you I regularly meet hare coursers while out with the terriers and I have seen that scenario a few times. Only it was a hare in front. And I'm talking about some of the big names in the coursing game. Also I don't think it was fox.
-
Seen it. I wouldn't think these boys will make a fortune with their methods but I give them 100% for enthusiasim.
-
Very good. The more you think you know about Hares the more you realise you don't know. Pity they wouldn't kill more Greycrows.

How the f**k have you managed to make 145 posts on these forums????? Bad enough the anti's spewing out lies about the hunting of quarry with dogs but for someone to come on here as a fieldsports person and add to the lies from within is terrible. You should educate yourself a bit about fieldsports before commenting. Your ignorance is amazing.

Elderflower champagne...
neil cooney replied to Tis TM's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Made 20 litres this year and opened the first bottle the other day, lovely. I gave the brother a bottle to bring home yesterday (a Cork Dry Gin bottle) and when he got home he rang to say that half way home it had exploded and covered himself, the windscreen, the dash and the doors in sticky Elderflower Champers. His eye was nearly took out with the lid which he can't find (the lid, not his eye.) and was lucky not to crash. He drove the last 3 miles home with a steering wheel in one hand and a Gin bottle with a mouthfull in it in the other. If he had been stopped he had have had a lot of exp -
You were lucky to see him when you did as I'd imagine he wont be around for long. Hope I'm wrong.

The only legal ways to kill hares here in Ireland is under liscence as a Beagling club or Coursing club and shooting by shotgun if you have a game liscence. But it's an unwritten law of the land here in Ireland that you don't shoot hares. A big NO NO. To course a Hare with a lurcher is illegal. The Hare here is regarded as a beast of the chase. In Britain Hare shooting is as much a tradition as Coursing and Beagling so why try and stop a tradition??? Although they can be a pest in places am I right in saying in England they're also shot to keep lurchermen away? The only moral question IMO

Live traps for foxes rarely work, especially in an open area. A walk in the area around you with a good terrier running loose might result in you finding the cubs. If conditions allow you might be able to follow the trail of feathers which will tell you what direction she's carrying the chickens back to her cubs. Also I'd have a line of snares around your pen on all runs and check them daily. An electric fence outside the pen is what a lot of people use to some degree of success.

Ballinlough Game Fair, Co Westmeath
neil cooney replied to true countryman's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Ah but Albert, Balinlough is a proven venue and the fact that an awful lot of the fieldsport/ hunting fraternity of Ireland know that the competitive side of things will be ran fairly means that a it will be a well supported show. Weather permiting. -
Shanes Castle No 1 - now to Birr
neil cooney replied to TomW42's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
First of all I take my hat of to Albert J for coming on here and talking to the terrier and lurcher fraternity, of which he's not a member but I'm sure is a supporter. IMO I think it is unfair to compare this years Moira and Shanes Castle Game Fairs as Shanes got the weather, Moira didn't. Over the years a lot of Irelands terrier and lurcher men and women have come to recognise that the organisers of the terrier and lurcher show at Shanes is ran by individuals who are in it for self gain. From the people I've spoken to this has done damage. JMHO
