  1. I tried to slightly release some of the gas from a bottle this morning but released 2 pints of nettle ale in less than a second instead. The interior of my shed, my fishing tackle, tool box, knives, the terrier standing at my feet and myself got soaked. Then as I stood there soaked it started to drip from the ceiling on to me so I took a bottle and got out. I put the bottle in the fridge and left for the day. This evening a hunting friend and I drank the bottle and it was worth the effort. There's a slight smell off the ale (if you'd call it ale) but it's very tasty. Try it.
  2. What about the cats that roam at large and take ages to kill rodents, young birds and ground nesting birds. As long as there's dogs and cats this sort of thing will happen. If cat owners love their moggies so much how come most of them put their cats out all day to look after themselves?
  3. Just google Nettle ale or beer. I more or less copied the recipe of the the River Cottage web site. It's nearly the same procedure as making Elderflower Champagne and after slightly opening one bottle it seems just as explosive. I'm going to leave it for another few days before trying. I'm told it will be around 4.5%.
  4. I see on the news you's have got your first Green M.P. Don't take your eyes of him/her, we've got 4 and they're b*****ds.
  5. Neck of lamb on the bone, perfect for a tasty Irish stew.
  6. Picked a couple of bags of Spring nettles and made 24 pints of nettle ale which is due to be bottled today. And drank next week.
  7. Excactly, if there are cubs at home a terrier will make sure all's accounted for.
  8. The Irish was probably never a breed that specialised in one job. Like most Irish breeds it was probably a jack 'o all trades, master of none. But before the saluki cross came along a lot of the top coursing men in Ireland liked the Irish terrier cross as a coursing dog and some of these dogs made names for themselves and could kill hares. The Saluki then put that cross out of the picture.
  9. Couldn't make the meeting in Kells last night. Some friends went. It's now said that Trevor Sergeant has been quoted that Stag Hunting is only the start of it. Be prepared folks.
  10. Try keeping poultry where there's Pine Martins near by. Rumour has it Coillte or Duchas (the forestry or wildlife crowd) is releasing them to control the grey squirrell population. They have certainly spread quickly. I picked up a dead one on the edge of Navan town and a friend seen one in Mullingar. A friend of a friend thought he had trapped 3 mink in a week trying to get at his fowl. They were pine martins. A few years ago it was said that Co. Clare was the last stronghold of them, now they're everywhere.
  11. Thanks John, Folks wether the legislation has already been passed to ban the Wards we must still fight the Greens and show we're not to be messed with. All these polls to be supported and the RISE meeting are not all about the Wards. For instance Gormless is trying to turn Loch Sheelin into a bird sanctuary. This is an attack on shooters. The new laws proposed by the Greens in the animal welfare bill is worded in such a way that it will be illegal to set one animal after another animal. If this is passed it will make it illegal to allow a dog/hound to chase any quarry. So don't think that
  12. www.irishtimes.com/polls Please vote NO against a ban on staghunting in Ireland. Also today on 4FM (94-104FM) @ 5.30 debate on staghunting. Also tonight at 8pm Headford Arms, Kells ,Co Meath, R.I.S.E. meeting.
  13. IMO without a doubt a fox. At this time of year meat eaten at the kill is brought back to the earth is regurgatated for the cubs. The head and tail missing is the call card. I doubt a badger would catch a healthy lamb that's more than a few days old. Also when the badger eats from the head down he peels back the skin, similar to the way you'd eat a banana. This lambs neck skin is removed. A large cat would have killed a lamb by catching it across the back. That lamb has no damage done on the sides. It's only on large game they need to take a throat hold.
  14. How's things Bryan, could you make a bit of room in your in-box please, Neil.

  15. Actually Aisling, it looks to me that your anti-coursing. That makes you an anti. No park coursing is not hunting, no one said it was, but it is a fieldsport. One with a massive following. By the way, the only legal way to course hares here in Ireland is under rules at a coursing meeting run by the I.C.C. wether it be open or park. Also hares netted for a park meeting must be brought back and released in the same place they were netted. So park coursing doesn't actually take any hares out of the Irish countryside.
  16. Mr Harcombe certainly shoots from the hip and the book is a good honest read.
  17. Backfilling is the job everyone hates but it's one of the most important aspects of terrierwork. Some lads do try their best by putting sticks or branches across the hole and cover these with the sods and clay. When they walk away it looks like they've done a good job but when it sinks it's bad. Good earths when minded will provide game for many years. Sadly there are folk who'll walk away from a dig without backfilling and these almost certainly have no permission or a clue what they're at.
  18. I tried pedigree chum and all I caught was hedgehogs. I caught several including the same one 3 times in a week.
  19. Kill your turkey and pluck while warm. Clean as you would any bird. A little tip that means a lot is, break the bone half way between the foot and elbow but not chop it so all the skin breaks. Pull the bone out of the skin and put at a right angle to the thigh. Put the bone sitting in an S hook so that the bird is hanging by one leg from the bottom of the hook with the broken bone taking the weight of the bird. Twist the bird a few times and holding the bird in one hand and the foot in the other put all your weight on the bird and you should pull every single sinew out of the birds leg. Repea
  20. Thanks Gonetoearth, I don't follow the Wards myself but I do know that they sent a dozen members over to the Hyde park rally.
  21. I went in the end, not expecting much and was pleasantly supprised. To me the hound trailing was new and I enjoyed it very much. Nothing like hunting but I can see the attraction in it. Poor show of terriers and lurchers but that's completely understandable in the middle of October. Some nice harriers and fell hounds being walked around which in my part of the country we don't see to often. I managed to pick up a 114 year old book on foxhunting from the Badmington Library for 50 euro. There was good support and fundraising done for hunting. One thing that bothered me was that as I live in
  22. I'd arrange a meeting between yourself, your neighbour and your landlord to sort out the problem. If behind your back your neighbour did complain he'll hardly say it in front of you. And stress that you are not keeping a rooster and that hens are quiet. How young is the child? If the child is a toddler explain that the hens are the childs pets and will be heart broken.
  23. I don't think in England that the hounds people sold out the terrier and lurcher fraternity but over here I believe they would yes. Thats why I think at the likes of Punchestown the terrier and lurcher owners should support all fieldsports with their presence and cash and behave in a respectable manner and prove to the likes of the H.A.I. and the C.A. that they can't be done without. At the end of the day I don't think it will be other organisations that will do away with terrier work etc. IMO it's the cowboys who own terriers and lurchers that will get it stopped. JMHO. I was talking to
  24. Not saying your right or wrong Bryan but if Gormless bans the Ward Unions who's next? Coursing? Beagling? Most packs aren't starting 'till next week or the week after and IMO a big show of support at this festival might just help to show how important Fieldsport are to the Irish economy/people. Not that the Greens give a shit. Some of the events being held are hunting orientated too, the hound trail for example. (Incidently, a good friend of mine won a hound trail in Punchestown around 40 years ago.) There's rumours that Gormless and the Greens are going to blackmail the Irish Govt. next ye
  25. Lurchergrrl you say Poodles are extremely smart, hardy, game and fast. I'm sorry but I've heard some rubbish spoken about working dogs over the years but that takes the biscuit. JMHO.
