  1. The trouble with getting a ram to beat your pup up is that you could end up with a dog that will refuse to hunt near sheep. The best way to stock break a dog is familiarity. Chastise the youngster when he looks like he's going to chase sheep. The end result should be that they don't even notice sheep and see them as part of the scenery.
  2. Now, now, Paddy, you already know the answer to that question.
  3. Nice bird but nearer a cock than a stags me thinks.
  4. I've read plenty from nowadays to one that was 160 years old. I had one bought for me as a present of e-bay that's 100 years old called "Of horn and hound." Personally if I was buying a present for someone who follows hounds I'd get them a subscription to "Hounds" magazine. It's very good.
  5. I enjoyed that. The star of the show is deffinately that Walker hound.
  6. Excactly Simoman. There is no room for nervousness in any type of working dog, no matter what breed. Hounds should be reared to be bomb proof and want for nothing. When they join the pack they should be treated well and expected to work hard. The reason a huntsman doesn't like to see hounds looking for a rub on a days hunting is because on a days hunting hounds have a job to do.
  7. The ground the last few weeks here has been bottomless, yet I heard of an English pack who had to stop Autumn hunting because so many hounds were doing toes on the rockhard ground.
  8. Is it true they refused 150,000 for him? They reckon he could break .28 yet, wouldn't that be a record?
  9. Used motor oil was always used for ringworm. Ringworm being a fungus dies when suffocated and when smothered with a thick engine oil then dies. It works too. Mind you, a vet would probably disagree. There's more money in medicine.
  10. My sister was at an art exhibition one time and Shane entered obviously drunk drinking a bottle of wine by the neck. Later on my sister seen him hand the bottle to the waiter who then filled it up from the water tap. And Shane still appeared drunk.
  11. Oldest trick in the book. At the very least they disrupt the hunt. At the most they get hounds killed on a public highway and (they hope) it makes the papers. I've seen them at it.
  12. A lot of thought should be put in to any breeding no matter what. Inbreeding and line breeding has it's fans. And breeding of pedigree unknown has it's fans. But wether one likes it or not brother to sister matings have produced some of the best workers / producers that our chosen breeds have known.
  13. Muzzel him before you pull it off and keep an eye that he's keeping it clean. Light exercise.
  14. I use ACV in my fowls water as it's great for their digestive system. A week on and a week off. However, ACV has an acid in it that can draw toxins out of metal drinking bowls and as most of us give our dogs their water in metal bowls you could poison them.
  15. I know it is Albert. It's just a pity that such mis-information is available on-line at a time when the working terrier was never as popular and those that are struggling to get good working lines and those coming in to fieldsports could read the said article.
  16. Be carefull what you say Littlefish. The Anti's have been trying to say that for years.
  17. There's a lot of dogs being stolen in the North Strongstuff but mosly not by Knackers but by 2 lowlifes.
  18. I read about it in the paper and while he shouldn't have battered the dog (a staff) would 50 people have showed up if he was a peadophile ?
  19. Firstly, forget about Anti's. Everyone knows who the main dog thieves are and yes, they are going across the water. The problem lies with the amount of dog swappers that are out there and are always looking for dogs, hence a ready market. Someone in the next few days will be offered Beagles. Even if every person on this planet knew of the stolen beagles do you think someone will stop and think for a minute and say "hold on, these might be the stolen ones." And anyone who starts shouting " how do you know it was knackers?" should go and ask those who were robbed who it was they seen in thei
  20. 26 terriers stolen in Cork City in 6 days. Several black terriers stolen in Tipp 2 nights ago. The Riverstown foot beagles had 10 hounds stolen 2 nights ago. And no-one knows where they're going ??????
  21. I disagree Danny. now neil read the other thread about the rules of the trails and a staff did get tested the as a wheaten And I never said they weren't tested the same. Possibly the trials were a test for a wheaten but IMO they didn't test a staff. And IMO the biggest test was how competitive the trials actully were amongst dog men. In other words the hotter the competition the harder it was to get your dog or bitch of the day.
  22. Doesn't matter one bit. My old bitch Penny worked 'till she was 15 and wouldn't rag one. Her longest time to ground working was 27 hours.
  23. There's an award winning gun club in Ireland doing it so I would say it is legal. And they told me the birds dress out at 17 lbs average which means you keep an eye on them as their coming down, ouch !!
  24. Years ago a friend of mine bought a pit bull called Rambo. He hated macho names so re-named the dog Jam Roll. Anyways, Jam Roll got of his chain one day and killed a lurcher and a winning greyhound.
