The USPCA didn't ban the Pit Bull Terrier. Government legislation did. What the USPCA did a few years ago was remove many Pit Bulls and Pit Bull lookalikes ie. staffs, EBTs etc from Northern Ireland. The USPCA headed by Phillpott can't make owning a terrier illegal. They can however try and make it illegal to work a terrier. At the moment it is completly LEGAL to work your terrier as long as you stay within the law. Phillpotts current campaign is to try and turn the public against those that work their terriers. There's a very strong tradition of working terriers in N.I. and always has bee

If farmers are getting a good price then best of luck to them. Next year it could be the oppisite. Anyone who says foxes don't take lambs is a fool. As will the badger and the grey crow will pull the eyes out of a lamb that the ewe isn't watching. The grey crow will also take the eye out of an adult sheep when it's stuck on it's back. I've also seen where a fox ate the udder of a ewe when she was stuck on her back. She was still alive when we found her the next morning. This year I know a farmer who lost all triplets to a pair of ravens (one in each set of triplets). I worked for a farmer o

Terriers lost to ground?
neil cooney replied to Beastmaster1980's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
OK Beastmaster, maybe your question was an honest one. The very nature of terrier work means that there's a very slight risk to the terrier. Wether it be injury or death. A terriers courage is the main reason most of us love the little heroes in the first place. BUT, a question like yours is perfect for bringing the idiots out to answer it in a stupid way. The main reason terriers are lost to ground is through accident. -
Terriers lost to ground?

The anti's will love this one. -
A few times over the years when I've had to make an earth empty without digging or shooting the foxes I bring a terrier with a good nose to the earth and let it go in the lenght of the lead. Even better if the terrier sounds a bit. If it's a vixen with cubs she'll have them moved that night. After foiling the earth a few times it should start to look unused and your terrier (still on the lead) should tell you no one is home. Then stop the holes. I've saved many a litter this way where they've been doing no harm but have been seen.

Hope it's successful, good luck. -
Sad really. It's a fit , healthy fox that doesn't know where to start in survival.

Dermot Weld took Unaccompanied out because Quavega was left in . She's going for Punchestown. Boston Bob wins which ever race they decide to leave him in and if Kauto Star makes it there and wins there wont be a dry eye in the house. A friend of mine backed Hurricane Fly on the Wednesday last year at 9/2 ( I kid you not), money in the bank in my opinion.

TREATING DOGS WITH IVOMEC
neil cooney replied to baz69's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Ivomec can kill dogs with collie in them. It can also be severe on a dogs kidneys so I wouldn't use it on old or young dogs. It used to be used as a last resort when nothing else had worked. Kill or be killed you could say. There are several good wormers and pour ons nowadays without having to resort to drastic measures like Ivomec, IMO. -
But then again the Otter was hunted in a very wet enviroment. Another thing I've noticed is when you see a fox leaving covert at speed you can be sure scent is good. When he leaves with no hurry you can be sure scent is bad. Like the hound the fox is a hunter and he himself needs scent. He knows when it's good or bad.
-
During the Winter three times a week I speak to two gentlemen who between them have 130 years of hunting between them. When I ask them if scent will be good they both usually give me the same answer. "I don't know." I wait 'till hounds find their first fox and then wait to see if scent is good. Then you might find it's good in covert but not in the open, or vice versa. It might be good on grass but bad on stubble or plough. Then when you think you have it sorted temperatures will change and scent will change. Often half an hour is enough for scent to go from good to bad, or vice versa. A

I think what's happened is that the anti's have dug up old quotes from many years ago made by Enda Kenny and Eamonn Gilmore where they said they were opposed to hare coursing. I know a few weeks ago that 2 TDs said they were anti too. Any one who think's the anti's in Eire are asleep is a fool.
-
A little off topic but years ago someone took a photo of a hand reared hare riding a lurcher pup and sent it into a newspaper. The paper ran a competition with a prize for the best caption. It was won with " we're inter-coursing".

As you've no photo Jigsaw I presume you mean a hikeing / walking type boot. If so, I don't know about them but I once paid 140 for a pair of Sherwood neoprene Wellington type boot that fell apart in one season.

LOL, my father has done the excact same TWICE while hunting in the last few weeks.

Fowl kept in pens need some form of protein. I often feed mine minced beef and they'll take your fingers off for it. Folk don't realise how carnivirous fowl can be.

fox hunting on the lakeland fells
neil cooney replied to ronnie's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I had a chance to buy a first edition of that book years ago for 50 quid. It was at a game fair and all I had on me was 50 so I didn't buy it. I bought a 5th edition a few years later for 35 quid. I'm still kicking myself. -
Horses for courses indeed Dee. Personally I wont let a bar be used to one of my terriers unless the collars failed or been pulled off. If rocks are an issue it's a different type of bar used. They don't help a terrier in any way . Shovels, locators and good terrier work do however.
