  1. lovely action shots, 2 handy ferreting dogs, really pleased for you, looks like it was a good day.
  2. always really sad when a true country man like your uncle john passes on,and usually a wealth of country knowledge goes with them, but really glad you have such good memories of what your uncle achieved for you and others. rip uncle john.
  3. just going to be played out with longdog sung by show of hands, sums my life from begining to end, wouldnt have had it any other way.
  4. always used bells on ferrets whilst working, a good old tested method of keeping track of them when working, providing the wind is not raging so you hear bugger all,the bell doesnt get clogged up with mud,and the bell doesnt get snagged up in purse nets, these days i mainly rely on my locater, watch the dogs as they usually know where the ferrets are moving in the hedge, also like to work albino or light coloured ferrets, bit easier to spot if they wander out than polecats in big setts that are covered in brambles and ferns.
  5. well lads, you cant expect rabbits to be in abundance like they used to be,what with mxy, rhd, predators, night shooting, ferreting, lamping, weather conditions, summer hunters, the list is endless, but the main culprit is mans greed, the humble rabbit has done well to survive this long, got to be one of the most persecuted species going,it will be a really sad day if the rabbit ever leaves the countryside completely, remember you can only enjoy your sport if you got a few rabbits left to breed, been areal noticeable decline in rabbit population, these last few years, you can only kill them once.
  6. yes marvel, thinking the same myself, been in the dog game a goo few years now, never heard of it,still you live and learn in this game.
  7. seen this type of mating, twice now, the first time was a whippetx grey dog to a pure bedlington bitch, the resultant litter made no height at all including dog pups, just looked like overgrown bedlingtons, the second mating was bedlington bitchx bedlington whippet, with same results, pups hardly making 18tts, these dogs made excellent bushing ,ferreting, and ratting workers, not running this type of breeding down, but always had bedx greys, bred using a good sized bedlington dog onto a good sound greyhound bitch, but just my view on it.
  8. good solid looking pup, what line is the deerhound side of her breeding, atb.
  9. ,just curious, have any of you guys ever eaten pheasants eggs, was having a chat with the mrs last night, and she says to me, you can get hen, duck, goose, quail, and even ostrich eggs to eat, but never see pheasant eggs in supermarkets, are you not allowed to sell them to retailers,or would they be no good to eat,or is there a greater demand for them in the game rearing business.
  10. cracking pics nothernlite, love the action shots, both dogs in top condition a real credit to you,a great start to the season, wish i had land like that to ferret on,atb.
  11. any of you guys used this product on your dogs, to aid joints and mobility movement, heard various good comments from horse owners, and humans who swear it helps them, been thinking about giving it a try, it is quite costly at £34 for 227 gms,but it seems to have been on the market for a few years,be intrested to hear from any greyhound men that have used it with good results as it is targeted at them, atb.
  12. lots of the old boys that used to go to the fishing were very superstious, would go mad if you whistled on the quay side would say you were whistling the wind up,if they met a ginger headed woman or people they termed as jonahs on the way to the boats they would turn round and head home, you wernt allowed to say the words rabbit, salmon, or black cat whilst at sea, crazy but true.
  13. better the devil you know, than the one you dont.
  14. think maybe you are a bit mixed up mate, the bloke you could be on about is phil haynes, and his breeding was poachers pocket lurchers, the pocket rockets were jason powells, bull x whippet hybrids, handy little dogs.
  15. Just got the xray results back on my 10mth lurcher, vet says there is growth plate damage to his knee, gave me a load of antiflammotory tablets, do you guys think that the pup will make a full recovery from this injury, and run again, how much rest would you give to apup of this age, thanks to all who offered advice on my previous post concerning this pup.
  16. Had my 10mth pup out yesterday. gently exercising with my older dog on some newly cut grass fields, they were play fighting, and dissapeared over a dip on the field.when pup came back he was liting his back leg,got him home and checked him out. doesnt seem to be anything broken and he is not yelping in pain, lashed plenty of witch hazel and arnica gel on his foot, where there seems to be a lot of swelling, and will rest him up for a good few weeks, any other advice, apart from seeing vet.
  17. i stand corrected on this, but pretty sure spud had rillington blood in him,of which gary hosker was abig fan of at the time in the 80s,put back to a westmead greyhound bitch, met him afew times at shows, selling his sporting prints ,some which i still have, believe he exchanged some prints for spud as payment, i never ran anything out of spud, but run a good few with rillington blood in them in the 80s and 90s, superb little dogs for ferreting , lamping and catching the odd hare, great dogs and greater memorys.
  18. just found this old advert in a1985 november issue of the old shooting news, the ad reads, lurcher puppies, bred for work, any game, large or small, fur or feather. german wirehaired pointerx greyhoundx saluki x greyhound.i wonder was this a one off x using the pointer,or was this type of dog, doing the business back then they were located in wellingborough, and no price on them, could have been an intresting x to try.
  19. that dog spanish battleship looks a real machine of a dog, cracking old pictures, many thanks for putting them up,great nostalgia.
  20. cracking looking pup in perfect nick, all credit to you,but if it were mine, wouldnt be jumping it over 5 bar gates at 6mth old, gradually increase the height it jumps as it gets older, seen young dogs badly put off jumping by misjudging and landing badly, also not good on growingyoung bones and growth plates in legs, ground is rock hard at moment not good for running or jumping, just take care atb.
  21. the guy with the tiger cage on the lorry was dave thorne a forestry contractor, they reckon he used to keep a norfolk type with deerhound blood in them, and had at least 40 dogs in the 1970s and early 80s,any body know what became of him, couple of pictures of him and cage in hancocks paper back book lambourn, lots of cracking old photos, worth having.atb.
  22. Meiowwwwww lol obviously you pair have had dogs from dave platts lines, well your entitled to your opinions, but let me say this ive had and worked 2 dogs from dave and they could do the job they were bred to do,tackle anything, good honest loyal dogs, yes id have another, all the years dave been breeding hi=e is still in business so that speaks for it self, and i bet most of the guys who slag his dogs off have never seenone work or owned one, still this is what keeps some folk happy.each to there own.
  23. good result for summer hunting, just think of all the young rabbits lost,no wonder come winter theres nothing for us running dog lads to go at,alright its pest control to farmers but just wrecking it for winter time.
  24. my father in law was only a very young man, when he was involved in the d day invasion, serving in the royal navy, right in the thick of it,got mentioned in dispatches for bravery regarding rescue of american service men from stricken vessel, only brought to light at his funeral service, a very brave man that took what he seen to the grave and never spoke off it after the war.
  25. its your call mate and make up your own mind on what you want out of your next lurcher, lots of good advice from lads on here but every body has there own opinions and views on what they need from there dogs, type of ground and what they hunt them on,like acouple of lads have said maybe try something with deerhound blood in it dont think you would go far wrong with dave platts breeding, but just my opinion, good luck .atb.
