  1. really like the look andcondition of the parents, that pup looks in outstanding condition and has a lovely stance for the age of it, real old fashioned type of breeding in them, perfect types for a varied variety of tasks, they are a,real credit to you,all the best with them for coming season.
  2. why don't you let the bigman himself know face to face what you think of his stock, certain it would turn out very interesting outcome.
  3. every one is entitled to their own opinion leo, but dave plats has bred a lot of deerhoundx greyhounds over the past 30yrs,and still breeding, still in business and still selling pups, so must be doing something right, over the years ive had 3 dogs off him and never had huge problems with them over running or turning when on their prey, even when young dogs learning the trade, just for intrest leo, how many of his dogs have you seen running or have you personally owned, know a good few lads that have some of the latest stock and have only heard good reports, but like you say just preference.
  4. never had much to do with wasps and their nests, but I remember a good friend of mine was hand trimming a hedge and some bushes with a hand sycle, poor bugger hit a hornets nest, stung to hell with bstards, had a very bad reaction to the many stings he got, what made it worse for him,it was very open country and nobody around so no escape, in apretty bad state when help arrived.

    butterflies

,intresting to hear the reports of increasing numbers of butterflies up and down the country, in my view there seems to be a healthy increase by farmers and gamekeepers etc to help conserve the country, sadly other species of wildlife, flora and fauna are in drastic decline in lots of areas, remember when I was a kid there were always frogs, toads, lizards in the waterways, the corncrake and sky larks in the meadows, sadly now becoming rarer each year, a lot of it I believe is due to intensve farming, buiding and land grab, just the way the world is going.
  6. just back from a stroll with the dogs on local farm land, cant believe the amount of butterflies and moths that were about, the most that's been about for years, wondering is it due to the prolonged hot spell and the recent heavy rainfall, nice to see the different species and varieties are making a come back, shocked to read the other day, that a meadow in devon, that david Attenborough was due to visit to conduct a butterfly survey, had been devasted by council workmen by mistake, apparently the were supposed to have cut pathways for the public through it, but cut the whole meadow like a lawn
  7. many thanks for the photos and replies to this topic lads,a good response to what iwas expecting, a lot of you lads certainly know your stuff and come up with some very intresting facts, long may it continue.
  8. Never gets any easier losing your dogs through illnesss injury, or old age, when you have had them from pups moulded them into your way of life, and they have done there damndest for you in their working lives, the last thing you can do is your damndest for them in return ,for the loyalty they gave you,its great to know there are still lads about who keep their dogs for life. whether their good or bad, allmy dogs stay with me all their lives and will never join the chain of lurchers being traded on by chop and change merchants, hope you get another pup soon and give it the care and work you gav
  9. Thankyou very much for putting the link up with pictures of the scarteen terriers or so called, I would have liked to have seen the letter that col hancock wrote, as I would rate his words more than that off plummer, never read the fell terrier, but read most of plummmers books, when I first started out in terriers and lurchers, along time ago, nobody else were writing books on dogs but plummmer, so lots of people believed what he wrote, but that's another story.
  10. This letter was first published by DB plummer in 1982 issue of shooting times, apparently col hancock had mentioned the influence of the irish terrier on the fell/ Lakeland terrier, some years ago the scarteen foxhounds bred a smooth or slope coated fell terrier of the type developed by bray and buck. these terrriers were aptly named by the cumbrians who imported them, would any of you older terriermen, be able to cast any light on the origin of these terriers, probably now a non existent breed.
  11. seen these whippet pups on donedeal the other night, look awell bred litter in top condition, and not badly priced, the bit about them having field trial experience in the breeding made me smile, thought this only applied to gundogs, never seen or heard of it mentioned in lurcher breeding before, must be another way of boosting sales of lurchers, could be wrong.

    Eggs

a few years ago I had good acess to plenty of eggs, used to give the dogs a couple a week did okay with them. different story with the ferrets were feeding them every day with an egg, after a while they lost most of their body hair, got told they were getting too much protein from the eggs, knocked them down in their diet, after afew weeks the hair had grown back, not saying eggs are bad , but just my experience of possibly feeding too many too often.
  13. think it could be a young thrush
  14. There seems to be more lurchers about now, that still have their dewclaws left on,. and even working them on all sorts of terrain, don't seem tohave any problem with them. I have owned 2 lurchers wth dew claws on and never had any problems when running them, I found that if clipped just like toe nails, they caused no hassle.
  15. , watching the effects of the fire on the wildlife and the people in the surrounding areas, complete devastation for all concerned, mainly the gamekeepers with there grouse population struggling for yea irs, and the livestock losses for farmers, dread to think of the rabbits, hares and wild birds that have perished over the last few days, I take my hat off to the fireman, army, gamekeepers and farmers who are doing their damndest to control what has to be one massive devastation on the moors for years, only hope ,is for some rain to come to dampen things down, Australia and the states would pr
  16. that sounds like a handy little type, for a bit of ferreting, lamping, and general daytime mooching, have you done much with her yet and what age is she now, if there were a lot more rabbits round me, iwould be tempted to try a pup out of him, any body wanting to see a preview of brindle sam, dave shows him on the dvd cobs, chickens, and running dogs revisited, thats where he caught my eye, atb with her for the coming season wont be long now.
  17. pretty certain that dave sleights proven whippet dog brindle sam, that he uses at stud, has a good percentage of barnsmere blood in him, looks a strong type ideal for breeding lurchers, 19tts, and 25 lbs in weight, any body on here, running anything out of him.
  18. cheers for all the response to this post lads really helpful, think I will go down the leather collar route, incidentally checked black dog trading site out, looks like there ceasing trading, might be wrong, how do I contact bloke who does kcb leather
  19. in the market for a couple of good decent leather lurcher collars 15 to 17 wide, see a lot of you boys with good ones on pictures of your dogs look good quality, any body point me in right direction, know that strong stuff make stuff that can take a bit of toughness, anyone cheers
  20. watched the terrier and hound groups last night, the whippet was a well worthy winner in show room condition, the thing with the terriers that really piss me off is how the long haired breeds are able to see with the mass of facial hair covering there eyes up, how would the muppets that parade them round the show ring cope if they couldn't see ahand in front of them, walking round near blind like these dogs, talk about animal welfare, I know a lot of breeds need hair covering there eyes due to eye defects, but don't see the need for this in terrier breeds.
  21. Got mine in a wooden garden shed, plenty of warm bedding in nest boxes,no icy blasts, or frozen water bottles, raw and dried food, snug as a bug in a rug, and all well fed and contented, hope cold snap eases off so.on, hard on animals and bird life
  22. ran lots of blue hares pre ban, in the70s and 80s,with different types of lurchers on vast and hard terrain,to be honest they are a not in the same league as a good strong winter brown hare, the white hare is a lot smaller, a lighter hare in weight for dogs to carry, nowhere near stamina as the brown hare, and when really pushed hard by a lurcher would often hit the ground like a rabbit on amountain side, but saying this I have seen some wonderful courses on them going on for maybe 5 mins, the dog and hare, ,running in slow motion mode , used to be my early sunday morning ritual running the wonde
  23. fantastic scenery and cracking pictures, bet you have endless hours of solitary fun, just you and your hounds, the only thing that would concern me is if the dogs were to hit any of those huge boulders, bet that type of terrain plays havoc with their feet, your one lucky man to have so much ground to run on, the hounds must be seriously fit for those conditions.
  24. is the pup out of the same litter that joe had on dragon driving out of Saracen and an irish bred greyhound, if he is out of Saracen there will be plenty of power in him, looking well, nice to see your taking your time with him, he will be worth the wait, atb.
  25. what price do the rabbits usually go for micky, usually sell for about £6 apiece skinned and£4 for saddle back and 4 legs at local farmers market, when they get them, as for hares cant give them away, never mind getting any dollar for them, wild rabbit will soon be a thing the past, pheasant prices are at an all time low.
