A dog unsafe with stock is down to stewardship,Georges dogs were seldom lent to lurcher breeding,in his kennels.Hybrid vigour produces more honest Beddy lurchers than names behind the breeding, then the kennel they reside in aids their ultimate progress,at times. You can polish a turd and make it glisten, its still smells. morton ican assure you that last beddy x i had was well versed with sheep from an early age, but turned rogue for no apparent reason not down to my training,in regards to the crosses from george newcombes strain, these dogs were bred by les robinson of brigg who had the u

i would say the hardest part of getting good bedlingtonx greyhounds,is finding true working strains of bedlingtons, the first 2 dogs i had of this x wereout of the rillingtonstrain when george newcombe was breeding in the1980s,they were excellent dogs for lamping, ferreting and daylight hunting, had another one late 90s unsure of what was in the bedlington side, turned into a night mare, just wanted to kill every thing, stock included needless to say we parted company when he was about 2yrs of age, the first two were with me tillthey passed on, good dogs and good memories

just back from hike with dogs, walked miles,as usual, caught 1 rabbit, and guess what it was full of mxy, still in good body condition, and was still pretty active considering it having the disease, amazes me how some times they can give a dog afair run when they can hardly see, hope they get a better recovery rate in all areas this summer.

rabbits round my area are really scarce on the ground these last couple of years, just my way of thinking but i believe that the decline could be due to the following reasons, more virulent strains of mxy,out breaks of vhd,the night shooting brigade, summer time hunters, more predators, foxes, cats, polecats, raptors and constant hunting on same ground, some one once said the humble rabbit would always survive. but from what i see and hear of late i have my doubts, hope we never see the day the countryside is without this great little sporting creature.

my dogs have to be 100% bomb proof with sheep,every farm i run on is teeming with them,start pups in amongst them soon as there innoculated,andtake them through sheep and lambs every day very fortunatethat i can do it,farmers keen as mustard round my perms,only ever had 2 dogs that were hard to stock train, they were a bullx and a bedlingtonx greyhound,had these crosses since and managed to get them sorted with sheep,i certainly wouldnt keep a dog that had killed sheep too much hassle;

as i stated in my previous post it was started out as shooting news, just found my first copy of it which was issue 72 june 1984,still got all the issues from then till november1987 issue249,think it was changing to country mans round that time, forgot to say in 1984 price was45pence,in 1987 it was 65 pence, still take them out and read them to remember great articles and great writers, thanks phil lloyd and daergi for all your jottings happy days.

used to get it every week for years, prior to that it was the shooing news, which was full of great articles by true working dog men except for plummers weekly lies, stopped getting it when it started to fill up with political crap, micky mouse hunters and the same repetive shite being written year in and year out, becoming more of a comic every week a waste of money, just get ed/rd magazine now which is good value and a good read.

great pack thorny, looks really good ground for daytime bushing, dogs looking well ,really like the terriers youve got there did you breed them yourself, enjoy and good hunting.
-
its up to you mate, its your call and your dog, only you know what treatment, cost and time ,its taken to put her right, all credit to you forgetting her sorted lots of lads wouldnt have been arsed,at 8yrs imight be tempted to let her do abit of ferreting ,but certainly wouldnt run her too much on the lamp, arthritis and stiffness in the leg willprobably affect her if you work her too much and too long.atb

merry christmas lads,i am not a chop and change man with my dogs, there with me from pups till they retire or die of old age,i like a lot of other lads, work them hard and regullary from maturity till they are about 8yrs of age, which with luck and good care most of my lurchers make, from about 8yrs i tend to still work them but ease there workload to suit there abilities.i always tend to look for a pup to train up when they approach this age, my oldest boy passed away only recently still doing abit of ferreting at12yrs old,the oldest lurcher that i had that was still wanted to keep going was14

out myself last night, like you lads say it a warm night, damn good wind on, but there was a good quarter moon making it light, only had 3 hard runs the few remaing rabbits are well educated to the lamp, personally i think conditions were poor last night

hi lads, just a question regarding running a lurcher show,or running one in conjunction with another country event,if you run it yourself do you need totake out any type of insurance,or if you are attending another event as a guest, would there insurance cover you,the reason i ask is lots of guys tell me you need public liability insurance incase anything happens to people or dogs, could you just get one day cover and how much could it run out to,atb.

like the look of her, would make a nice ferreting and lamp dog, good luck and enjoy atb

used to be a lad from bradford called dave emerson, that used to be big into breeding bedlingtonx greyhounds, dont know if he packed up or not, never had one direct from him, but had one from a lad in burnley, that had some off his breeding in it, it was a bedxgreyxbed xwhippet, had him for 13 years,a great dog, best 50 pounds i ever spent
-
Because they're delicious, but to be fair to a great bird I'd rather give them a sporting chance. If a lurcher is catching them then there's a good chance they're just after coming in from their migration and are weak. The full moon at the moment means they've more or less just landed. I shoot them (when I'm lucky enough) and if any of you lads are lucky enough to get one in the bag thanks to your lurcher do yourself a favour and have him for your dinner, just give the head to your ferret. Delicious maybe, small and fairly rare, definately. i wouldnt say that woodcock were rare, maybe

had awalk out the other night with the lurcher and lamp abit of moon about, not many rabbits about, but plenty of woodcock lying out and feeding on the waterlogged fields, any of you boys who have taken them on thelamp before will know that they lie tightalot of time like a rabbit, well with the lurcer i have now deer houndx i managed to nail 3.had quite a few lurchers over the years but only had one other that couldcatch them at night,he had a fair bit of saluki blood in him, any of your dogs taking them and what crosses are they,as i believe it takes good and clever dogs to do this,

yes dave harcombe still edits earth dog /running dog,and agrand and fine job he does every month, and never fails to deliver,i have subscibed to the magazine since the first issue and have every copy right up to date, and i rate the magazine still an excellent read, just my opinion, thanks dave, atrue ambassador to the lurcher and terrierwork, and long may the magazine prosper

i would think by now most of micks stock will be well diluted or virtually near non existent,if memory is right he was an ex teacher who dropped out to live in the fens in the 70s did a good job of recreating the old style of norfolk lurcher,he was acharacter in appearance and used to walk stubble and rough ground barefoot to harden his feet up,had famous dog called rusty, there was agood write up about him and phil lloyd meeting up many years ago in the old shooting news, but i do stand corrected if what i say is wrong it was \long time ago,any body know what became of mick, think plummer also

just got my renewal form for regulated weapons, seems to be alot more questions to answer than last time, the question relating to any convictions states you declare every thing doesthis relate to minor driving offences from way back or police cautions, also when buying or selling a regulated weapon do you both need to exchange certificate numbers and are there any other paper work involved.any comments would be helpful many thanks
