  1. I totally agree with that marking theory Neil. Little spots with one or two holes will be full of scent if somethings at home. But like you say if theres a massive spot with loads of holes for the scent to escape out of and also maybe the animal has been still for a couple of days then the scent will be minimal and a dog could mistake it for being empty or not give the owner enough of a mark to take notice.
  2. Ive never understood what lads get from running pups through empty earths or pipes. I think the first time they go to ground they should mark it and enter off their own backs. Encouraging into empty places encourages wasted time running through empty spots later in their career IMO. On a personal note I have an 18 month old dog ready to start, hes marked a couple of spots over the summer and had a couple of rags on stuff thats been dug so far so hopefully he'll be going sooner rather than later.
  3. Is there any terrier books out this year?
  4. Was just curious mate. I have no idea about stuff like that lol. Good luck with the books.
  5. So was that for just the book to be formatted and finished or does that include all the books printed off and ready to sell?
  6. Out of interest Mosby how much does that kind of thing cost to get it done yourself?
  7. I used the waxed stuff as it stays pretty dry and fluffy. The normal paper goes flat and wet straight away ive found. The best ive used was straw but the dogs constantly got ticks from it so i stopped using it.
  8. Living the dream then ey? Hope it all works out for you mate.
  9. You still doing a bit with the terriers Wilf?
  10. Yes same with mine Cargol. Concrete runs but the actual kennel is raised off the floor so they can be swilled out properly every morning and also keeps the draught out the dogs kennel. Them slat things look very cruel and cramped to me, and like has been said it boils down to the owners laziness of not seeing to the dogs regular and not being arsed to clean them out daily IMO.
  11. I once had a dog that marked an earth in a sheep field so i let him go and he reappeared 5 minutes later pulling a live lamb out. It was wedged in tight so we reckoned a fox had pulled it in.
  12. My mate used to have a first cross bull whippet and it was the gamest lurcher ive seen. It used to go to ground regular and pull them out. One day I seen it chase a bolted fox from one earth and drop into another on the foxes brush and re-emerge an hour later having been at it all the time. He was a handy dog if you couldnt be arsed to net a big place up.
  13. It all depends on depth, time to ground and also whether the quarry is playing ball. Numbers can be very mis-leading IMO. Would you rather have 5 2hr plus digs to a dog or 15 that are a spades depth etc?
  14. Wooden handles don't last long with any amount of digging no matter how careful you are with them.
  15. Pick and Shovel he used to go on the sites as I think.
  16. That dog on the left would be my choice.
  17. Looks like you're having some fun and the dogs are doing the job well for you.
  18. I had the same with a dog of mine the other day that finished last season perfectly. Hopefully its early season keeness and he'll settle down again next time out
  19. Thats it Goat well said, a lot is down to the owner judging things without stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.
  20. Yes I understand what youre saying, i think it depends on how much time you have to spend with the dogs during the day and keeping them occupied. I have 2 different mates that have over 6 terriers on the yard of mixed sex and seem to get along fine.
  21. I dont think dogs are or should be better than bitches, i just seem to click with them better. My digging partner is the total opposite and gets on better with bitches. Its just personal preference.
