  1. When I started catching rabbits on a professional basis,.I went away from the larger (and arguably more versatile jukels) and instead I favored, the smaller, more compact animals. Obviously, such critters do have their own physical limitations, however, this factor was replaced by their ability to get 'down and dirty ' in the darkest hedge bottoms and dense brash. I've kept a miscellany of lurcher hybrids, but never bothered in retaining working dogs that were not best suited, to the task in hand. I've done it, I admit it,..but I always found this folly to be a wasteful pasti
  2. Back in the day,..we used whatever jukel that was available...they had to work,...we made them work....it was emotional... Nowadays, we breed what we want from a massive gene pool,...the hunting life is so much easier..?
  3. ? The most important criteria with pastoral hybrids is Temperament,...not just from the jukel itself, but also from the handler... Herding dog composites can be difficult to understand,.. they definitely ain't for everyone...?
  4. So sad to hear this terrible news from Socks... I enjoyed many exciting rabbiting days out, in the company of this much missed, Welsh Warrior... Always keen as mustard for a hunt and invariably up for some craic...? As a fellow hunting man myself, albeit now retired from the game,..one can only feel an intense sympathy, for his beautiful young family. He is now at peace , RIP Chicky....?
  5. Yes, we were pleased to have you guys down here..? Seems like a lifetime ago....
  6. What a refreshing post Greyman?
  7. Lots of confusion about the Antipodean herding breeds...? Folk (even today) still get confused twixt Black and Tan, Huntaways and Kelpies....different dogs, specifically bred for different tasks... Its a shame that when the Collie lurcher boom was at its height, in the 1990's ,. that the wordsmiths of that time did not seek to offer some education and information regarding all the various pastoral breeds...I suppose on reflection,..it did not suit their needs,...and they did not possess the required practical knowledge, to pass such valuable data on....? Luckily, there are now p
  8. Oh yes,..I forgot to say,...I have a book for you Neal, I feel your continued support for the breed, deserves a small reward....? I'll drop it in when I am next round your way... All the best, Phil.?
  9. Who knows Neal? There has been a lot of 'facts' regarding the Kelpie ancestry ,jotted down in books and manuals, over the decades,...and much of this info is contradictory... I was on the Kelpie case long before they even came to the UK...? I have relatives in both Oz and New Zealand , and they have always sent me images of their Sheepdogs, Cattle Dogs, Huntaways and Smithfields... Being brought up with farm curs, I have a great interest in the herding breeds and only ever got into lurchers and running dogs, when the need arose..? Only a fool would ignore the detailed
  10. I remember talking to an ancient Blacksmith, some 50 years ago..he was over eighty , so he would have been born into an era when Estate workers did not readily admit ,to keeping ferrets. Poaching illicit game back then could have got you chucked out of your house, so owning pugs and cur dogs was a risky business. His were kept in a quiet place behind the stables...I'll never forget the beautiful snow-white coats on his tiny Bitch ferrets.. He called them Does and the large dog ferret, a Buck....never forgot that either...?
  11. Nice old-style running dog Alex?.... I've had several Deerhound based lurchers over the years,...great fun, loved them all..?
  12. ? As a youth, I never understood the term poacher,..I thought that anything we could catch from the fields and woods, belonged to the man that took it... Obviously, as time went by, I learned different...? Dogs are great for certain tasks, but for ground game, the wires were always favorite...Rabbits, Hares, Pheasants and Deer all succumbed to the hangman's noose. Plus factor was, "Ye ain't got to feed a snare"....?
  13. Hi, just managed to get onto the site....it has been,..emotional ?
  14. I believe the original Kelpie may well have had, Dingo blood in its makeup ?
  15. The Lurcher, Jack of all trades, Master of none...?
