  1. Good to hear some conversation regarding Whippets...? When I first came South from my native Wales, we settled in Portsmouth... There was a long tradition of poaching/mouching style of roustabout hunting in the area. It seemed as everywhere I wandered, I encountered lads with whippets. In my opinion,..Whippets (Ped and Non-Ped) and Rabbiting,.... go together like Apple Pie and Cream,...I loves 'em..?
  2. Yes,..I remember that little booklet Allan.. To be honest, it is a miracle that the wee treatise has survived for 33 years ! Back in the day, the Binding process colloquially known as 'Perfect Bound',..was not as sophisticated as it is today. The glues were poor, and it needed a much thicker collection of pages to produce a long -lasting product. With such a slim Jim type of booklet, the pages were almost certain to fall out,...but there ya go, it was, what it was...? Halcyon Days though,...I wish I could have those thirty odd years back,...I might have walked a differ
  3. Let your new Mole Traps weather in a good killing run...? All the best,..I wish you good trapping..?
  4. If the ACD has the correct minerals and renowned basic instinct,....those unguarded chainsaws, will be reassuringly safe?
  5. Good honest jukels,.. full of fun,.... I love them...?
  6. Yep, it was reet quiet in the countryside back then....?
  7. Well, I'm no art critic, I just liked the bright , happy colors, so whether its a good effort or not, God only knows? However, it was a gift to me from a complete stranger, so I accepted the picture, with the good grace in which it had been given..? http://www.chalkwarren.co.uk/
  8. This wee Brindle Merle bitch certainly looked the part and she was always a trier,..sadly she never made the cut ...? I've owned several lurchers that had 'Hard Blood Whippet /Grey genes and they invariably sported a six pack kinda physique. Fabulous to look at, and relatively easy to keep conditioned and looking like Page Three stunners....? However, it is far harder trying to get the various Herding composites to look the part...more so if they are F.1 Hybrids..
  9. ? Well, the pure bred obviously ain't ideal for roustabout 'lurcher work', or we would see a lot more of them, out and about... In saying that ?.......I did have a pup one time, and she really was a smashing wee thing.. She came to me off a 'Flapping Track' Dam, at six weeks of age, and as I was out of work at the time, we went everywhere together... We killed loads of hares, ...and she mowed Roe deer down, like they were standing still? Never had any rabbits at that time,...very few around locally and I had no interest in walking miles, for little reward. Wee Tina w
  10. Well said Fred? Life is way too short to worry about records, and 'personal bests'...? Took me a long while to realize, that there is a whole lot more going on in the world , than chasing silly fecking shushis.. "Quality sport with quality company",...that is the way forwards Brother..?
  11. You are not far wrong there Kalibrgun? The 'Southern tourists ' never got a look in...? TOMO's Brindle bitch knows the score on that ground, she is as keen as her owner...it was great to see...?
  12. Its strange how some rabbiting areas appear to be the gift that,.. 'just keeps on giving'...? A season or so back, I remember ferreting, the same brace of fields on a regular basis, and each time, the bag was in excess of 70/80... On one memorable occasion, that noted rabbiting man TOMO , was going at it, like a stoat on speed, and through dint of hard work, he made most of the bag up himself ! Obviously, the ruling was No Nets, just a ferret and a lurcher apiece, and all to meet up in a few hours, kinda craic. I captured a quick twenty shushis, then me and the jukel sat
  13. Its good that lads put up posts and reports of their days and nights out , hunting over such superlative Elysian Fields ? I remember , back in the day,...telling hunters locally of my first rabbiting experiences to the Far North.. Even my pals who I had known for many years were a tad wary of my holiday tales... "How fecking many, did you catch?... I don't believe it,...you are full of shit".... Well, I cannot deny that...?...but, for guys that have not traveled and had at least, one good hit, at the big time, I cannot really blame them for being dubious As I have
  14. Too right TerryD...? As far as training a lurcher goes,...much of the working side is purely instinctive and other than getting lots of first hand experience and absorbing (and hopefully acquiring field craft),.there ain't a whole lot you can do to make a dog ,.it's often down to the Gods.. As for training a young lurcher into becoming a sensible side-kick, it is sometimes best to forget that he is a running dog composite, and instead of trying to school a dog along the hunting road, the favorite way is to simply become acquainted with the methods used to school any canine type, and to us
  15. They were exceptionally good nets...?
  16. ? With rabbiting,..you can only catch what is there to catch... Its a big old country when you start travelling around, and it takes a versatile jukel to consistently , 'attend to business', on unfamiliar ground..? I stay close to home now, and just ferret the long hedgerow warrens, in the Southern counties. A whippet sized cur does just right, especially when getting down and dirty, in the ditch bottoms... Hardly the stuff of legend, but perfectly adequate for the task in hand...?
  17. I would say this cage is a cat trap. The steel plate, hand guard kinda gives it away...
  18. SOLD At the age of 15, Jack McCraith reached a momentous decision; "Everyone knows how to catch rabbits," he said. "I'll learn how to sell them." On his first buying trip, he biked into the countryside and bought two rabbits which he skinned in the back yard and hawked around the neighbours. Within 20 years he controlled a rabbit empire which stretched across half of Australia. In a 40 year career, he exported more than 130 million rabbits. Wherever the rabbits went, he went too.
