An elderly polish man lived on our street, this was nothing uncommon as a lot of eastern Europeans settled in our area post and during the war. this red hot summers morning he was in the bookies wearing a thin polo shirt and as he waved at me and my granddad walking in. I noticed a number on his arm.... I sat next to him and asked him about it, he smiled and said a very nasty man gave me that tattoo many years ago, I asked him why he didn't cut it off, He said he liked to look at it to remind him of his family....Anyway I opened my beano and cracked on.... Many years later he passed over as old people tend to do and my mates mam, (A first gen English woman born to polish parents)went to the funeral...that night when I knocked on my mate, his mam was in and we got talking...At the funeral, the priest told how old eddie was once young eddie in a concentration camp and had stood in line with his young mate rather than his family and watched as the door closed on his mother,father, his brothers and sisters. soon after the camp was liberated and eddie was brought to the UK as a refugee...
