Here in Lancashire my Firearms Department is superb. When I phone the office they are always most helpfull and pretty quick. I see no justification in a force taking 5 or 6 months to process an application.

It's a strange one! The percieved knowledge is that it only takes 5ftlbs to despatch a rabbit hit in the head. The power in your rifle would have to be well down to get below this plus (in my Ultra) when the charge is low the pellets drop by 1 to 2 ". I don't have any experience of pointed pellets but it's difficult to believe that at that range they wouldn't do the job.

I bought a new HW99S a couple of months ago and struggled with it for quite a while. I got rid of most of the 'twang' with a bit of polishing and fitting a plastic piston sleeve, the trigger adjusted nicely as well. However, it was underpowered out of the box, only doing 9 1/2 to 10 ftlbs. (.177) I played with it for some time and eventually got my RFD's air rifle guy to look at it. His conclussions were indeterminate, he thought it might have a breech problem that he had heard of but not seen himself. Fitted a new seal and there is a great improvement. I find this rifle to be very hold an

As a preference I use domed pellets rather than pointed but even then they will occasionally go right through a rabbits head at 25 yards (.177 though). My Ultra puts out about 11.8ftlbs with heavy pellets but sounds as though it has no power at all, just a light 'phut'. Get the speed tested on a chrono. Skin the head and see where your pellets hit, might just be a little off zero and hitting it in the neck.

Barry - he's far from broke, just different priorities ( he landed back with a sonic moles scarer ) whereas I'm just about to buy my seventh rifle ! Timmytree - No worries about the humanites aspect, he's used my rifles in the past and I'll make sure there is plenty of target practice first and that he knows about aim points, range, etc. I've worked of a few triggers in the past. Coypu - thanks for the trigger hints, the safety is inside the trigger gaurd so I'll have a look inside it. On your link it looks like the 'Comet' model. says it has "a precision set, single-stage trigger".

Timmytree - I think you're right here. The fault lies with the dealer. The chap did call in at my RFD but they had no reasonable second hand ones in and refused to sell him a cheap and cheerful one. I think the dealer gave him the impression that as it had BSA stamped on it, it was the pukka thing.

It's a break barrel springer. The length of pull is not so much the problem in the initial stages but then it grates and goes off with no indication of when you are near the release point.

An acquaintance (total air rifle novice) was recently sold a "BSA" air rifle to use on rabbits in his garden. Turns out it's a Gammo with BSA stamped on it, no mention of Gammo! When fired it sounds like two railway carriages shunting and a trigger pull that lasts forever until it grates to an unpredictable let-off. Anyone know if I might be able to sort his trigger a little? I can't find a parts diagram and I'm not familiar with the model ( I think it's a Hornet by pics I've seen). I have a reasonable working knowledge of triggers in general so hope I can sort it. Any info. gratefully rece

Have a look at the "Pitch Black Hunter". It's a bit ugly but comes complete to go at £350. I fit it on my 10/22 and the Ultra. I often wander around at night with it just in my hand.

Can you let me know how you get on with the red light on rabbits? My white lamp dazzles them fine but I have a green laser that they just seem to run away from.
-
Is that a T20 torch? I've just bought an IR one to suppliment my night vision. Great value for a bit over £30. The IR one is actually too powerfull on the highest setting for close range (60 yards or so), good job I got the three mode model and can turn it down.

Oh, I'm not giving up springers, they are too handy as a travelling gun. Pocket of pellets and thats it, no bottles etc. I now have a HW99S, primarily for squirrels, the HW97K was just to heavy for me to swing around.

New Member/ Issues With My Bsa Ultra Se

Sounds as though the scope is faulty. Adjusting AO should not alter POI laterally. Altering my AO only makes a difference to the focus. -
I swapped a spare springer (HW97K) for a single shot BSA Ultra. Never used a pcp before and wanted to see what they were like. So far I've only played with it but last night took my night vision (Pitch Black Hunter) off the 10/22 and popped it on the Ultra and zeroed at 30 yards. Tonight I was having a mooch about enjoying the cool breeze and saw a rabbit in the NV. Set the cross hairs just behind the eye and gently sqeezed ! Amazing ! Just the mearest 'phut' and it keeled over, stone dead. .177 and it dotted that big rabbit no problem.

More likely yellow - as in JCB !!

No muntjak round here, only sheep, sheep and more sheep ! I was planning on reloading, intersesting what you say CC about the 45 grain varmiter causing less meat damage. Is there a downside in that they are not as frangible as v-max and more prone to ricochets. I don't know much about reloading but wondered if it was feasable to play about and produce a reduced, milder load for closer range rabbits? Mind you , I have the .22 subs for that.

I have just about settled on a .22 Hornet. At the moment I have two x .22lr and a .17hmr. A couple of days ago the hmr was driving me up the wall trying to check the zero in a gusting breeze. I find it amazing that a bullet that travels 100 yards in a fraction of a second can be pushed off course by two inches by a light breeze. On the understanding that the Hornet " bucks the breeze" better than the .17 hmr it sounds good to me. Is it feasable to replace my hmr with the Hornet? Used mostly for rabbits and corvids at reasonable ranges (up to about 130 yards). I raised the subjet w

When I first applied I was required to supply written evidence - no "if's or but's"! After a suitable period I now have an 'open' licence. Upon filling out the new form for my latest renewal (in progress at the moment) I supplied the name and address of one permission - as requested on the form. My FEO turned up today for an interview and had a note in his folder that permission evidence was missing from my application ! They wanted a signature from the land owner. It's no problem but definatly was not asked for on the form.

You could try borrowing a different scope and see if your zero continues to shift, that will elliminate the scope from the equation. I have two identical Hawke HD scopes and one has a definite creep beore the turrets clicks, when adjusting I turn an extra clcik then back one to settle it. -
Shooting In The Rain....
Cedric replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If you're woried about rain or snow getting down your barrel, rifle or shotgun, pop a condom over it (old Army trick ) then just shoot right through it ! -
Not used it in a barrel but works well degreasing the rest of the components - don't get any in the cylinder - it diesels like a 303 !!

What's the best round to use on gulls ??
-
You're not alone. I lie there and picture each shot - placement, distance, sound as it hits or not etc. etc. Then I get up and go out again !!!
-
I have a Swift Precision Stumpy, beautifully made and very quiet though not a terrific difference to the SAK. It is short though.

Got some unwanted help this morning dressing some rabbits I'd shot. Got them with the night vision and left them out for an hour until it got light to go and pick them up and found them like this! They were right down to the backbone, the beaks on those crows must have some power ! Bit of a gory pic but never mind !
