  1. Just been out to zero my .22's, Anshutz 1417 bolt and 10/22 semi with some surprising results. The Anshutz was about spot on at 25 yards and went 1/4" lower at 50. The Ruger grouped well at 25 then dropped about 1" at 50 ! I know that it is accepted that some energy is lost with having to recycle the bolt on semi's but this seemed a lot. Does anyone know of any chronograph tables compiaring muzzle velocity between semi's and bolt actions? After adjusting my scope I got some decent groups from the Ruger with a slight change of point of impact when I altered the scope magnification
  2. I had great fun playing with the trigger on my new 10/22. A bit of common sense and about three nights at it but got it right in the end, loads of instructions on the net. Think more along the lines of stoning rather than filing though, lots of reasembly and trying.
  3. I'd say go for the HW97k ! Mainly because I have one for sale ! Look in the adverts section! Only selling it because I wanted a lighter rifle for squirrel shooting and I'm pretty ancient and quite small, the 97 is just a bit too heavy for swinging about in trees, but having said that it's perfect for rabbits off a rest, even standing at close ranges.
  4. Does anyone have any info on the proposed Scotish Airgun Bill which seeks to licence every air powered weapon in Scotland (estimated at over 500,000) ? I wonder how it might affect crossing the border with an air gun (for competition or sport) and also the mail order businesses. How on earth do they think they are going to be able to mange the administration involved?
  5. Hi, any info on shortening barrels on a spring rifle? I'm about to purchase a WH99S with a 16 1/2" barrel, no silerncer fitted so it will be quite long with one on. I read that Sandwell Field Sports have been shortening barrels on this model to 10 1/2" as part of their tuning and rebranding it as the "Imp". Anyone with experience of using one?
  6. Just about settled on the HW99S, my only reservation would be the lack of moderator. Is a mod. reallly necessary on an air rifle? And what's the best way to fit one if required?
  7. I don't know much about pcp air rifles, if you go out and only fire a few shots do you have to empty the cylinder before you store it or can you safely leave it charged?
  8. At the moment I have a HW97K synthetic in .22. It shoots very well and off a rest is the bee's knees for rabbits, however I'm finding it too heavy for lugging round the woods after squirrels. As I'm only 5'5" and getting on a bit I was considering a HW99S in .177 for the squirrel job. It's a lot lighter and seems well made. I'm opting for .177 for the flatter trajectory, difficult to estimate ranges in trees. Do any of you use one and how do you get on with it? I presume it will dot a rabbit as well as the .22 with a head shot. Does the lack of a moderator make much difference with
  9. Buy a box of ever brand of ammo your dealer has in stock then try them, you'll be surprised just how differently some of them group in a particular rifle. My Anshutz shoots RWS like a shotgun but loves Eley and Lapula. For target use you have the choice of various target ammo, most of which is subsonic anyhow. Just note that it's not really suitable to use target ammo for game as they are solid bullets not hollow point and will travel right through a rabbit without much hesitation !
  10. I don't know how much you know about the characterisics of the .22rf ammo but you could download the Ballistic Reticule Calculator from www.hawke.co.uk This gives a table of bullet drop at various ranges, for example zeroed at 50 yards shows a drop of over 7" at 100 yards !!
  11. Andrew, don't limit yourself to looking at farm land, round Preston there are many industrial estates and office complexes, often surounded by fancy grass areas that suffer from rabbit damage, perfect places for air rifle use as they are usually closed to the public after hours.. A word with the management might produce results - but go presentable !!!
  12. tillbrook - you might be being a bit ambitious trying to zero at 100 yards. Once you get the misfiring problem sorted go with a 25 yard target until you can get most of the shots touching in a group. If still shooting to the left and you run out of adjustment check the fit of your moderator (if fitted) first, they can throw shots well off. Shoot a group with no moderator to check. Ask you gun dealer if he has a spare scope you can try, they often get them in part exchanges. Check the mounts as well. If you bought the gun second hand it's doubtful if the dealer went to the expense of strip
  13. Deker, did the police query why you might want more than one rifle in .22lr ? They asked me to get rid of my old 10/22 when I put in for my Anshutz but after a couple of months readily agreed to another 10/22 for a NV setup!
  14. PS. I discovered that a rotary electic toothbrush dipped in solvent and poked up through the magazine well is great for cleaning the crud off the chamber face and bolt face. When unloading a partially emptied magazine I noticed the remaining rounds felt quite gritty from the crap that falls down into it so I've been giving them a gentle wipe before re using them. A good squirt of electrical contact cleaner seems to clean the mags. fine.
  15. Thanks Seeker, the vid links you posted seem to have expired. I found a number of different methods and used the one in this vid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLy3_pxQfqs
  16. I got to try my new 10/22 with a Pitch Black NV unit last night. It's a little wierd looking at an off-set screen rather than through a scope, also very difficult to judge distances, I found if the rabbit looked quite big it was in range. Picture was quite clear up to 50/60 yards, you could have picked out a fox easily at 100 yards but as magnification is only x5 picking an impact point on a rabbit was limited to closer ranges. Despite not being able to see me the little buggers soon scatered at the 'whump' of a .22 sub hitting their buddies so only got three with the NV. I used the ND
  17. I don't think you are correct there Remy, there is no wording whatsoever on my certificate stating that the weapons must be used with/without a moderator. Using or possessing a moderator if you don't have one on your ticket is a different matter. As for the chances of the guy being granted all those guns on a first application and with limited land would seem to be slim to negligable!
  18. My Anshutz pops the HV a good 2" high and a little to the right ! Fitted the Pitch Black night vision tonight and went out to zero it, bit of a fiddle to start with but easy when you get used to it. Only tried it at 25 yards due to lack of suitable targets and was most surprised. Even with looking at a screen and not shouldering the rifle I got groups not much bigger than with the scope ! So - 50 yards it is tomorrow night. One drawback with the night vision fitted is that it is too bulky to fit in a slip. Does anyone know of deeper gun slips or anyone who makes them to order ?
  19. You might try rat shooting, that's really satisfying and back to basics and not as easy as it looks! Find someone to take you along, it's great fun.
  20. A .22 sub HP will go right through a goose's head and carry on without hesitation ! Big wing bones and a thick breast muscle make body shots problematic. I think the residents would be your biggest problem if you used a 12 gauge. PS. You could always get in an Eastern European, they are pretty good at catching geese and swans on the quiet !!
  21. Spent most of last night fiddling with the trigger and managed to reduce the 9lb creepy factory pull to about 4 lbs, pretty crisp! Polished everything in sight and gave it a coat of Teflon lube. Modified the bolt release at the same time. I suppose I can improve the trigger even more but was going on the cautious side, might tackle it again in a while. Just been out to try it at 50 yards, it's much easier to shoot now. Seems to really like the Lapula with the Eley a close second (I think the lateral dispersion is down to me getting tiered. The RWS ammo was quite inconsistent, notable di
  22. Shoot the ducks first and use their remains as bait for the crows - recycling !!!
  23. The matter has been reported to West Midlands Police with a promise that their Wildlife Protection Officer will investigate. It shouldn't be too difficult to find him considering he has proved a picture of himself and what I presume is his workplace plus local road names on other vids - and maybe best of all - the name of his gun dealer in the title of some vids. A quick Google revealed a dealer of that name in the area.
  24. After a bit of research I've found that racing bikes use this kind of lube - so it's off to the bike shop in ther morning !
  25. Near Garstang. I also have a Anshutz 1417 .22 bolt action for daytime shooting plus a CZ 453 in .17hmr and a HW 97K .22, not forgetting the moderated .410!
