I made a top hat (about 1mm protuding above the spring) and tried adding a slip washer (approx. 3mm). The rifle would not cock at all. It came to a dead stop and wouldn't lock. I tried to look and see if the spring was fully compresed and it didn't appear to be, so I took out the slip washer and then it cocked but only just, needed an extra tug at the end of the cocking stroke. I thought of shortening the spring a little but, surely, that would defeat the power objective.

Elmer - what do the power bands do and where do they fit? I did check that the spring guide had plenty of room before it got near the top hat. I'm going to take the stock off and mount it securely so I can cock it and try and see spring compression etc. I've ordered a Titan spring in case I don't have any joy fixing this one. As I've fitted a piston sleeve to try and reduce the 'twang' I need a top hat or at least a thin washer to stop the end of the spring chewing up the tabs that hold the sleeve in place. I'm not too bothered about having it in the high 11's as long as it shoots swee

Hw99S - Compatable Springs?
Cedric replied to Cedric's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Thanks, I found Titan No. 1 listed as fitting, -
They are no tougher than crows!

Have you checked other possible causes, my new 10/22 was shooting low, shimming the mounts did not cure it, found in the end it was my moderator. Screwed on it was pointing downwards and the bullets were clipping it, sorted the mod and it was fixed.

Your FEO won't know if there are any rabbits on there or not, put in for vermin and do a lot of zeroing ! You might pick up some more land later that has rabbits.
-
Rez - what calibre? I've got a Swift Precision Nightingale, dedicated .17, super quality but about £ 130 !! Available in .22. They also do a short model, the 'Stubby' at about £60.
-
Anyone know if any other HW models use the same size spring as a HW99S? I'm trying to find out if I can get a Titan spring that fits.

After cleaning and polishing the internals of my new HW99S .177 (to try and get some of the 'twang' out of it) I had it chrono'd. 720fps, 8.4 gr pellets = 9 1/2flbs. Added a tophat (approx 1mm) plus a piston sleeve - result - 702fps but very consistant, no more than a 2lb variation. I tried to add a 3mm spacer washer but couldn't get the gun to cock so took it out. It's a bit mystifying. Could the sleeve (plastic and not tight) cause the spring to slow down to that extent? Do spacing washers increase power by adding to the compresion a fraction or could they stop the spring extendi

Quick update, re-assembled the rifle would not cock, the spacing washer must have been too much, took it out and now it cocks with the top hat in, will chrono it tomorrow. I had to make a new safety spring, mine disappeared - used a spring out of a pen, worked fine.

Davey, I checked that, not one there. Everything has been de greased and polished and I've made a 'top hat' to try it plus a spacing washer ( maybe overdone it). Also made and fitted a piston sleeve, used the base of a cooked meat tray from the supermarket. The plastic is solid and strong and moulds with a little heat ( to form the retaining tabs). Now all I have to do is search my workshop floor for the small spacing block that fits under the stock retaining screw and I can re-assemble and try it out !!

Don't you just love it !! 150 shots and no need to recharge ! Technique and practice is the answer, try not to change two things at once (stance, grip etc.) so you know what effect each is having. This unceasing quest for accuracy can become a bit of an obsesion !

17 Hmr Bullet Head Jamed In Chaimber
Cedric replied to bbs's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Can I answer even if I'm straight ? It won't have done any damage, it's not uncommon, poke it out from the muzzle end. -
There is a vid on YouTube on how to cut and finish a spring but don't go chopping anything off your new spring until you've tried it as it is. No option but to re-assemble each time to test, (you'll soon get to be a dab hand at it ). Same goes for spacing washers. I'm just doing my new HW99S which was only doing 9 1/2 lbs when tested. Without a kit I made 'top hat' by modifying a water pipe insert, also fitted a plastic piston sleeve. Then I thought I might need a spacing washer - a real DIY job - piece of plastic sewage pipe, heated and flattened, drilled and cut to size and it fitted

No problems !! I quite like the little rifle, it's very accurate. The loading is a little fidly under a scope but I'll get used to it. Off the shoulder it handles great, light and easy to hold for me, just what I wanted for those squirrels. First time I tried it, it was a bit windy but I managed this. All I have to do now is sort out this new HW99S that came out of the box underpowered !
-
My HW99S was a bit 'twangy' out of the box, a good polish of the spring and piston plus any other bits I could see reduced it by about 50%. Might be a good idea to check out the amount of factory grease inside and replace it with a good quality moly or teflon grease. With the Youtube vids - the guys may have spent a couple of hundred quid in getting them 'tuned'! Springers are a totally different ball game to pcp's, I shot my first pcp yesterday - vastly different from my HW, if it's better remains to be seen.
-
It's is regged. I swapped it for a HW97K that was a bit too heavy to swing about for squirrels. What pleased me was that my Pitch Black night vision unit fits on it just right so those rats had better take cover ! I'll need to modify the stock a bit as my right eye is a bit buggered and I shoot left handed with a scope and right handed with the night vision ( so my left eye is in line with the offset screen). It's a synthetic stock so maybe foam or latex pads, might even try and find a wood stock. I've still got a HW99S if I fancy a bit of springer fun.
-
I've just got a pcp as well, do they seem to prefer heavier pellets than springers ?
-
AA Dialblo fields, 8.4 gr.
-
I've fired everything from 25lb'er tank guns to catapults but never a pcp air rifle until today ! It was most weird, no crack, bang, whump or jump. Just brushed the trigger and a hole appeared in the target - no sensation at all. A BSA Ultra I swapped for a springer. I'll see how I get on with it.
-
A parts diagram I found did not show a 'top hat'. I'm thinking of fitting one though, plus a piston sleeve. Chrono'd at my RFD today and it's only putting out 9 1/2 fp's with average fps of 725 but pretty consistant, only 11lbs deviation. Info from Hull Cartridge Co. is to try a top hat of 3mm and see what happens.
-
Thanks for the info. That raises another question! When I dismantled the rifle to clean and polish the spring, piston etc. I saw the spring guide was plastic (?delrin) with a metal washer, there did not appear to be any 'top hat' on the front end of the spring. I just assumed there was not one fitted. Could it be missing? It's a new rifle.

Try different brands of ammo. I found a big difference with sub sonics in my rifle (Anshutz 1417). Eley and Lapula virtualy the same, best groups! Winchester a bit less so and RWS quite poor. Every rifle differs. You should check and see if the 452 comes with a free floating barrel, my 453 does. If so, clean all the crap out of the stock until you can slide a piece of paper all the way along. Partially touching stocks cause lots of problems. You should see the difference in ammo within a couple of shots on a .22, blasting the different lube out is not all that critical. You'll n

Is it a good idea to try and fit a piston sleeve to my new HW99S .177 ? It's still a bit 'twangy' even after a good polish of the internals. If so, what would you recommend, metal; ptfe or what ?

I think you are just being pedantic over the wording, the fact remains that it is the thin end of the wedge for all of us who enjoy air rifle or pistol shooting.
