  1. I suppose it's a gun I want - maybe not "need". The ammo cost is not a big issue, I already have two .22lr's, a hmr and a pcp and a springer air rifle - all of which I use for vermin control in differing situations ( I must have over a 100 quids worth of different pellets I've been trying). I'll get out and see if i can find some rifles to compair. I must admit I'm rather drawn to the Hornet being that I can use it on rabbits as well and I have no intentions of long range shooting. J_Edwards - I'll take on board what you say about the A-Tech moderator and look into them. At
  2. PS. The wooden block is carved into a dish for holding pellets, the foam backing stops it slipping.
  3. Simple, cheap solution - even as a temporary measure. I fitted a piece of pipe insulation and carved it to shape, the pics show it for left handed use. Once I had it right I taped it in place and rolled a neoprene sleeve over it.
  4. Dan - that sounds pretty noisy, I wouldn't like to bang off 50 rounds in a session like i do with the .22 and hmr. Charlie - I've wondered about reloading, I have the time and space so I suppose I could soon learn. I think I'll go round to my dealer and see if there is anyone with either calibre in the area then I couild listen for myself if they are amenable. We are pretty much out in the sticks and there are more guns about than the Royal Armoury !
  5. Thanks for the info. My Ultra is the single shot with no air gauge but has had a regulator fitted before i got it. I rely on the gauge on the bottle when charging and it seems to go to 200 bar before stopping. The power is pretty much spot on, it's only the first couple of shots I was wondering about. I'll try filling it a few times and see if continues to be erratic. I just noticed my first and second shot last time were well off but then it grouped in one hole at 30 yards.
  6. At the moment I use .22lr and hmr for rabbits and corvids and only come across the occasional fox but would like to do more foxing. I've read all the posts about the various centrefires and as I'm not likely to be shooting anywhere near 300 yards, probably under 200, I'm considering the .22 Hornet. I also like to do quite a bit of informal target practice and noise is a big consideration. I believe I've read that the Hornet is nearly as quiet as an hmr - is that right? Is the .222 a noisy round ? As for accuracy I gather that the Hornet is every bit as accurate as the hmr if not be
  7. I'm pretty new to pcp's, just having aquired a BSA Ultra. I find that after charging it the first couple of shots are often eratic. Is this normal and is it OK the fire off a couple with no pellet in the breech?
  8. Yes, don't restrict yourself to farm land. Many areas have industrial estates or business/office estates, often surrounded by grass and usually undisturbed after working hours. Find the manager and give it a shot. Be prepared and have your insurace with you.
  9. Looks like a custom target trigger, lots of different designs about.
  10. He he! The little buggers breed like rabbits ! It's amazing how the population can explode in some areas, maybe with very few a mile down the road. When there are lots about I love setting my hmr up on the truck bonnet and picking them off - precision shooting !
  11. Do you mean if you want to add a fresh area to a closed ticket they expect you to wait until renewal ? Should you just have renewed it could mean over a three year wait! That does not sound as though they are providing a decent service.
  12. A rough calculation gives a .22 pellet as having about 1.5 ftlbs energy at terminal velocity and a 40gr. .22 bullet as 4.5 ftlbs.
  13. Might sound like a bit of a numb question but is there any buld differences between the Ultra Multi shot and the single shot - apart from the obvious?
  14. Fitted three thin spacer washers and got 12.5 ftlbs ! Took one out and it's now just right. Lovely little rifle for something so old, bit of a recoil but shoots fine.
  15. I've just bought a couple of Hawke HD 3-9x40 scopes for general air rifle use, they seem fine at under £50 - but I did adjust the focus down to 30 yards. I think they are set at about 60 yards new.
  16. Coypu - did all you suggested, went out to a new permission today and found I had forgotten my sorted ammo - so just had to shoot the six rabbits and a magpie with regular ammo!
  17. Moxy - great pics ! I do like the big hammers ! My piston is not at all shiny, more of a matt, sandblasted finish except where it slides. I had a bugger of a job getting the spring circlip back on the safety assembly but managed in the end - only lost it on the floor once ! I fitted a Titan spring, it seemed very long and I thought it would take far too much to compress it so I cut about 3 coils off. Fitted it and got 10.6 ftlbs on first test - maybe i over did it! Never mind, I'll pop a washer of two in and see what happens. To compress it i made a U shaped fitting out of flat bar, e
  18. I've found the same, one field late afternoon - all over; night - bottom end only ! Next door field virtually night only, nothing at all first thing in the morning on either.
  19. Maybe all their staff have been seconded to the passport office !
  20. Uttings seem to have a similar AGS scope listed for under £30 so nothing lost giving it a go to try and adjust it to your needs.
  21. The front (objective) end looks as though it is tight down on the rail, if it is, take the scope off to try and remove the flip cover.
  22. Thanks for the concern but I have a blacksmith's shop and all the gear for making spring compressors etc. I've managed to work it out, took the rail off by tapping it back for about an inch then it lifts put of the slots - turns out I didn't need to, no fixings under it ! I got the piston out by removing the upper pin in the trigger assembly and sliding the sear forewards until it came out. A protrusion on this sear sits in a cutout in the piston preventing it releasing, quite simple if you only knew how ! It all seems in good shape so will fit the new spring tomorrow and check for po
