dadioles - the Anshutz will group at about 1" at 90 yards. I had previosly measured the drop at 4" (top of the post on my reticule), no wind at all. When I tried it on the target the group was good, just to the left. A couple of clicks or so corrected this. One question I wondered about was if the quality of my mounts could be in question - do good quality mounts make a difference?

Thanks for the advice, got my first one this weekend - with a barrel trap ! Bought a scissor trap as well but no luck with that yet.

Shoot-n-see targets are good, just a white dot for the bull. Best of all you can make your own for next to nothing - just look on Youtube for info.

Burnsey, I have a nearly new Bushnell Banner Dusk/ Dawn if your looking for one. 3x9 - 50.

Thanks, I had the mod off when stored, it could be the problem, I'll check. I'll try the rifle at different distance and see what happens.

I zeroed my Anshutz 1417 .22 lr last week and got it spot on at 50 yards, took it out last night and missed two rabbits clean at about 90 yards, guessed at the holdover. When I tried it on a target it was about 1" to the left, grouping well. Same box of ammo that I used for zeroing. No wind either at zero or last night. I'm using a Bushnell Banner 3x9 - 50, quite good quality. The mounts screws are firmly tightened. Do quality scope mounts make a difference? I often wonder if fitting my scope mounted light could possible move the scope? I try not to knock my rifles at all. PS.

Hi there, I'm going to try my hand at mole trapping, lots around on the industrial estate where my workshop is plus the next door fields. I understand the basics but would like to know which type of trap you would recommend to start with, half barrel or spring jaw type. Thanks.

I find that length of wait appauling! Here in Lancashire the office is most helpful and process applications quickly. I should consider complaining to the Chief Constable about the delay, there can be no possible admin. reason for the time scale, it's not as though they are flooded with applications. Following the Home Office guidelines it is not within any constabularies remit to try and limit the number of firearms by delaying tactics. After all you are only applying for a certificate to carry out a perfectly legitimate activity.

I liked the motorway one !! It reminds me of when I lived in Oklahoma, some lads from Montana were visiting. Whilst driving round the county side we often saw dead armadillos beside the road, a bit like hedgehogs across here. The Montana boys would leap out and throw them into the back of their pickup. When I asked why, they told me as armadillos were confined to the southern states, when they got home they were going to chuck one out every few miles and look out for the fuss when the local game wardens believed armadillos were migrating northwards !!!

Might sound like a bit of a numb question but what is a reasonable way to dispose of dead foxes ?

Thanks for the info, if I work off 580 then I should not be far off . I've been trying to work out POA at close distances ( got some rabbits in my flower beds just under the window! ). I suppose I could just stick some targets at varrying distances and try them but I'm trying to drag myself into the 21st. century ! Skot - I see you have a 97K, do you think it's worth having it tuned, I only hunt with it.

Hi, can anyone give me a rough idea of the muzzle velocity of a HW97K .22 shooting Accupels 16gr. Uk setup, under 12ftp. I've been using one of those balistic calculators and didn't know what to input. Thanks.

Wow! That stirred things up a bit ! Thanks for the answers. The animation on Wikpedia shows the sound breaking wave/cone is continuous so I presume a rabbit passed by the bullet would hear the full crack, not a diminished one from 100 yards away. Sometimes adjacent rabbits don't run at the sound of a shot, I wonder if they are confused by the directionality or the sheer volume of the sound.
-
Hi there, I'm trying to understand the mechanics of the sonic crack as the bullet leaves the rifle barrel. When a bullet from my .17hmr leaves the barrel it emits a sonic crack as it breaks the sound barrier. What I don't understand is, is that all it does - emit a crack at that one point - or does it continue as it travels. If the former, am I correct in thinking any rabbits at, say, 100 yds. would only hear the crack from that distance (obviously not the one I've shot !! ). Also, do you think the quarry can pick up the directionality of the sound, sometimes adjoining hedges might r

I need glasses for driving and general distance sight, i.e. spotting distant rabbits clearly. I can shoot through the scope without glasses but when I lift my head and look down the field my vision is slightly blurred so it's preferable to keep them on. This afternoon I tried wearing some amber tinted goggles over my regular glasses and found the tint was very helpful - just tried it as an experiment to see if I would benifit from tinted lenses.

I wear glasses for my rifle shooting (general pest cotrol) and find that when I lean over the bonnet of the car to look through the scope I end up peering through the top corner of my glasses and have to cock them up to one side. I've been looking at "Decot" HyWide glasses as a solution. Has anyone tried a pair? At nearly £300 a time I want to be sure they will do the job. Any advice appreciated !

You'd Need A Good Dog For This!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! Where was that pic taken ? -
Elliott - they were the bronze tipped bullets. Deker - I think the 'hangfires' could be attributed to the bad batch I had but that doesn't accout for the change of POI between different batches of the same brand of the better ammo. My RFD told me lodged bullets were not uncommon at one time, he and his buddy took to carrying a cleaning rod with them on forays ( after they had to scrounge some welding rods off the farmer to poke down the barrel one night ).

Semi retired farrier/blacksmith, so plenty of time to indulge in my shooting. Mostly pest control - rabbits, corvids etc. HW97K .22 air rifle. .22lr Anshutch 1417 .17hmr CZ453 .410 single shotgun (fully moderated) - lovely gun! I love fiddling with my rifles and do lots of target practice - Those "Firerbird" targets are awesome! Got my first FAC in 1963 ! Ex Army and have shot in Cypres, Germany and four years in Oklahoma (now my FEO wants to put me on a 'Novice' cert. for a .223 ! ) A countryman at heart and a bit of a DIY'er, make my own fox calls and shoot-n-see targets

Hi Dan, can you tell us what brand of ammo? PS. Your 'disposal' procedure seems most sensible !
-
Ballist tip ammo, 17 gr. Vmax boat tail. Barrel cleaned last week, about rounds put through it since. Grouping well, just a change of POI with the new box (different batch nimbers).
-
kingnewport - that is a "single set trigger". Push it forewards to set it to a light pull, I have one on my CZ 453 and don't care for it, you only have to touch it for it to go off. I find the extra pressure on the regular trigger helps me to keep the rifle a bit steadier. A "two stage " trigger has a bit of travel before you come to the firing pressure, I have that on my Anshutch 1417 and it's beautiful. If I could find one I would swap the CZ trigger for a two stage one.

After trying various brands of ammo in my CZ453 .17hmr I settled on Remington as performing the best, with Hornady a close second. My problem is with the variations between batches of the Remington ammo. I can zero at 100 yards and have them all within 1" then open a new box and find the point of impact has changed - this afternoon it was up 1 1/2" and right 1" (still grouping well). Is this common with the calibre? Anyone else finding the same? As an aside, I recently had a poor batch of Remingtons, the brass was dull, poor grouping plus a number of hangfires - including one bullet stuc
