  1. I was zeroing the hmr at 100 yards and decided to have a play with my .22. It didn't turn out too bad. However, looking at the groups I got to wondering just how much minute variations in the ammo. could affect the grouping i.e. is the ammo capable of better performance? It's often said (in response to a question as to a rifles accuracy) that the rifle is more accurate than the shooter! This is not always the case, as seen in trying different brands of ammo through a particular rifle to see which suits it best - groups can vary considerably. I realise that barrel quality plays a b
  2. I'm currently playing with a friends rifle, BSA with no model name in .22. I think it's a Lightning as it has the BSA silencer fitted. I've managed to get the spring out (which was broken) but can't get the piston barrel out. When I depressed the trigger/sear which was sticking up in the way it came out a little more but then stopped again. It has the Maxigrip scope rail fitted and I see from the parts diagram pistons for these have a cut-out in the top. Do I have to remove the Maxigrip rail in order to get the piston out ? Hope someone knows !
  3. Hitting a match box at 20 yards regularly is doing well - for me !
  4. Zero at 100 yards, if nothing else it will be good practice. Get yourself some decent targets, stick them out at 100 yard and go for it. I normally shoot Remington’s but after the occasional poor batch I thought I’d stock up on Hornady as a backup and will try them next week. Quite a different point of impact from the Remington, fiddled with the scope a little and ended up fine. Targets shot as numbered, brisk left to right breeze. The home made ‘shoot-n-see’ targets are great for hunting zeroing, you can see the holes quite easily at 100 yards (unless they are in the white).
  5. I'm convinced that .22 HV's are louder than my .17 hmr. ( Both mod'ed ).
  6. I had the same focus problem on my Hawke HD 3-9x40 scopes for short range work. The targets were blurry at 30 yards so I unscrewed the front ring and re-focused the objective lens until I was happy with the result. I believe they are focused for 60 yards when new, which is further than I need for air rifle use. Perhaps someone else knows of a scope with an adjustable objective that would do the same.
  7. I made the targets myself using Microsoft Paint in Windows, saved them as 'jpg's' and copied them multiple times into a word document, I've done lots like that. I could send you some if you wish. I've only had the Ultra a couple of months (my first pcp) and haven't cleaned the barrel yet. I cleaned the HW99 when I got it, also a couple of months ago but not since. Both rifles have Hawke HD 3-9x40 scopes. I've been really strugging with the HW99 springer in getting it to produce reasonable groups but think I have just about mastered it now, it's very hold sensitive. I've spent a fo
  8. If a head shot is not available what's the next best option for shot placement? Will a .22 12flbs pellet penetrate a crows wing for a heart shot? I've always been concerned that a chest shot might strike the thick breast muscle and not penetrate. Any ideas ?
  9. Look on here - http://www.guntrader.co.uk/DealerSearch/ Gives a list of local gun dealers.
  10. I've been trying lots of different pellets (.177) in a BSA Ultra and a HW99S. The difference in performance is remarkable. As you can see from the pics my Ultra did not like JSB Exacts, Daystate Sovereigns (both top quality pellets) or Accupells and did best with Bisley Magnums. The HW springer was totally different with Accupells coming out top and the Sovereigns second.
  11. Just make a temporary cheek comb raiser to see if it works before you lash out any cash.
  12. I've got Accupell's and RWS superdomes on this pic, the rifle is not really going well yet but it shows the difference in the pellets.
  13. Don't get overly concerned about rabbit numbers, you get your fac for vermin and pest control. Your FEO is only concerned about the safety of the area, one of my permissions is only a 2 acre paddock but in a safe location.
  14. Thanks Simon, I got it sussed out. The end ring was that tight it brought the entire lense unit out with it. I managed to get the end ring unscrewed then, the threads were very bunged up with Locktite or something, cleaned it off and with a bit of fiddling it seemed to work. I re-focused for about 30 yards and it's much better, both the reticule and target in good focus. Groups seem to have tightened by about 50% but it's very pellet fussy - I'll keep at it.
  15. 25 meters can be extremely challenging ! You're looking for perfection. It's a challenge to even clip the bull every time, lots to concentrate on in getting your technique right. Forget about telescopic sights, you need some good apeture ones (peep hole). When it comes round to scoring your card they even use a magnifying gauge to see if you have touched the inner ring. Give it a go, I shot .22 for years in the Army. (50 years ago and I've stil got the trophies !)
  16. I copy mine onto my computer, crop and resize them as well as there is a limit to the total size you can upload.
  17. Just do it but don't post it on the web !!
  18. A little progress ! SimonC - unscrewed it and the lense was not separate, came off with the end piece. However I turned it out slightly and the target came into focus at 30 yards, popped a bit of tape round it to hold it in place as a temporary measure. Barry - I have some hole punches that will do the job, I'll try it later this week. I read up and watched some vids about parallax, I had been using the eye piece focus ring to try and get the target and reticule into focus - didn't work. So I concentrated on the reticule and altered the focus at the objective end. Then I made a
  19. Charlie caller - I've never done any reloading, is it fairly straightforward or will I be getting into a minefield if frustration ?
  20. Barry - how does it work? It was nearly dark before it stopped raining here so didn't really get a chance to try it, popped a bit of tin foil over the scope and poked a hole in to see if i could still see through it. Will try again in the morning. I have some flip-up lense covers and can cut some bits of card that fit inside, that will hold them in place. I'll make a selection with differing holes. I also tried making a comb raiser, carved some water pipe insulation until it fitted my cheek but I did it standing, when I lean over the truck bonnet it's in the wrong place - again- something
  21. Numb question - which end ? The scope in question is a Hawke Sport HD 3-9 x 40, it's adjustable focus but having ancient eyes I can never get the reticule and target in perfect focus, I usually try and get the reticule sharp - plus I normally wear glasses for shooting, not so much for looking through the scope ( because I can adjust for that without specs) but so I can actually see when I lift my head. I don't seem to have the same trouble with my .22 and .17hmr but I use those at longer ranges ( they also have better quality scopes) and both rifles have padded cheek piece raisers.
  22. The Anshutz 1417 comes ready to go! Beautiful trigger, short barrel, very accurate.
  23. I'm not surprised the Eley did so well, my Anshutz 1417 loves them. I was out getting rabbits at -100 yards at the weekend, mostly head shots but the conditions were perfect. Maybe try some Lapula/SK's, see how thet perform.
