  1. I've been really struggling with my HW99S, trying to get decent groups. I've polished the internals and have the trigger sweet but I can't seem to get the groups I expect. Trying different brand pellets obviously gives differing performance but still nowhere near what I think the rifle is capable of. Been through all the obvious things - trigger technique, hold etc. and think I have narrowed it down to my scope use. I'm having trouble with paralax at short ranges (25 yards). Resting the rifle on sandbags when I move my head the cross hairs move over the target. Could i be right in
  2. bedx - where abouts in Lancs are you? Anywhere near Garstang? I've got a couple of scopes you could try on the rifle or some mounts. Pm me if you need.
  3. RWS - 8.3 Gn; Accupel - 8.64 Gn - not a lot of difference. (.177) I've never had much luck with them accuracy wise either in a HW97K or my mates Cometta400. But if they are accurate in your rifle there should be no problem.
  4. Before you buy a Combro you might want to check if it's suitable for break-barrel rifles, as it straps onto the muzzle end. Quite a lot of strain and shock on it when cocking. There have been a few posts when the alignment has moved in use and the pellet has destroyed the chrono. I'm not sure if the velocity range is suitable for firearm use either should you need it. I just managed to find a second hand Chrony Alpha, excellent machine.
  5. Elliot - Eley in the Anshutz, Lapula/SK in the 10/22. Dan - I went out with the 10/22 and night vision after dark, not a lot of success. My eyes are not the best and can't sort out the range problem yet. Amazing just how loud a moderated .22 sounds at 2 am on a dead still night ! Celtic - only one pic of my "retriever" !
  6. I set off yesterday to cull some rabbits which had been destroying a fence. I normally shoot them with a .17 hmr at between 90 and 100 yards. However , I found I had put in a box of empty cases and only had a few rounds of a poor batch of ammo, so I had to settle for the .22 with subs. The previous night I had looked at the Hawke ballistic calculator program and worked out one mil dot elevation should give 89 yards. Got the ranger finder out and sure enough the first rabbit was at 90 yards, settled the dot on it's head and over it fell ! The rest were just as good, ended up with 17 ex bun
  7. I was out last night with a Swift Precision Stumpy on my Ruger 10/22 and thought it could have been quieter but it's difficult to tell with the bolt noise, so this morning I tried it on my Anshutz 1417 and compaired it to a SAK. There was not much difference except the Swift had a little more 'crack' than the SAK, which was slightly duller. The Swift is very well engineered and shorter than the SAK but that's all I found in the difference. The Swift Nightingale ( which I have in .17 ) is a different kettle of fish, excellent performance, takes away virtually all of the muzzle blast.
  8. Is it worth trying to float the barrel on a standard 10/22 to try and achieve a little more accuracy? It would mean removing the barrel band; what function does this serve and could I do away with it? Perhaps bed the first couple of inches of the barrel and then remove stock material until it was clear. Next problem - I have a synthetic stock. Do you think it would be strong enough without being strapped to the barrel? I was planning on fitting a bipod and wondered if the forend might be too flexible to support it, though I could always strengthen the inside of the forend. Any
  9. I'd better leave the rifle at home before i venture out to 'find' some !!
  10. I've just been out with my CZ 453, first time since I had the barrel shortened to 16". It zeroed up fine with no obvious change in performance, that Swift Precision mod. (.17 specific) I bought is very good - so, it's rabbit stew this weekend.
  11. I just sorted a friends Comata 400, only a new spring (about £25 inc. postage) and a good clean inside. Might need new piston seal etc. but fairly cheap. A slide on silencer would save the cost of getting it threaded - but do you really need one?
  12. Anyone know what might make good reflectors for IR night vision? I'm trying to make a few silhouette targets and would like some 'eye shine'.
  13. Thanks fo rthat. It was at a show and he's bringing me some tomorrow.
  14. Hi there, any experts out there who know about Wasp pellets? I've come across three differnt tin colours, blue; purple and red. I'm talking about old pellets, apparently they now have a different manufacturer. I was trying a friends rifle (.22) with RWS Superdomes with very poor groups, he produced an ancient tin of purple Wasps that immediatly gave a 3/4" group at 25 yds - not bad for a Cometa! The tin lid was that rusted you couldn't make out the weight etc. I have been told that in .22 one colour was 5.5mm and the other 5.6mm but didn't know which was which. Then, today a gun de
  15. Hi Rez, I meant inefficient in that a rifle calibrated to be under the legal limit with the heaviest pellets available would not perform to anywhere near it's potential with "normal" pellets. I just calculated that if your rifle produces 11.5ftlbs with H&H FTT (8.66gr), using H&N Barracuda (10.65gr) will give you nearly 14ftlbs ! That's assuming no drop in muzzle velocity due to the heavier pellet. It would take a drop of 65fps to take it under the limit. I wonder just how many air riflles out there would fail if tested ?
  16. Rez - what calibre is your rifle? Increasing pellet weight greatly increases your muzzle ft. poundage, so , unless the heavier pellet reduces the muzzle velocity considerably there would be a problem. The problem with trying to keep a rifle under 12ftlbs with any pellet is that it is nearly impossible and inefficient. To keep under the limit using a 10.65gr pellet (i.e. H&N Barracuda in .177) it would have to leave the barrel at no more than 700fps. At the same speed a 8.4gr pellet (which is what I would choose to use) would only produce 9.4ftlbs, not really efficient. I watche
  17. Is it sensible to assume that a heavier pellet will generate a lower fps speed ? My .177 HW99 showed 740fps with an 8.4g pellet (= 10.2ftlbs). A quick calculation showed that, at the same speed a 10g pellet would take it over the legal limit to 12.2 ftlbs. Is it likely that the heavier pellet would slow the speed, keeping it under the limit? My concern is that if I raise the power to acheive 11.3ftlbs with my 8.4 g pellets it would only take a 9g pellet to put it over the limit. I'm just theorising at the moment and could do with a chrono for accurate testing. In the unlikely e
  18. What did you use to finish the bare wood after you cut the stock ?
  19. I recently aquired a single shot Ultra as a swap and it's a great little gun. The loading is a bit fiddly and when I fitted a scope it was worse, the scope turret getting in the way (fat fingers! ). Solution - turn the scope on it's side so there is no turret over the loading port, justy have to remember which way to turn the adjustments!
  20. What is it that makes one round/calibre louder than another ? I've no experience of the .22 Hornet but from what I read the noise level is managable. The moderator on my .17hmr takes away most of the muzzle blast, leaving only the sonic crack. Is this louder on faster/ larger rounds? Or is it the amount of powder that increases blast? I do notice that HV .22 lr rounds seem louder than my .17.
  21. Boil some rabbit, only the back saddle, slice and fry it hot oil until getting crispy. Take them along to eat cold, crunchy and delicious.

There is some individual responsable for this dog's death and they should be exposed. It is basic kennel management to keep strange dogs apart and prevent dog fights. Having said that, the buck stops at the top! Lack of training for staff must be the most obvious cause, with poor management. The Countryside Allience have recently been reporting the internal politcal infighting in the RSPCA, there is growing dissatisfaction with their agenda of hindering all country sports.
  23. I've had it to bits again, a closer inspection showed the top hat and spring guide were pretty close so I reduced the guide by about 10mm. Seeing that I now had plenty of clearance I put the 3mm spacer washer back in, re assembled - it wouldn't cock again !! I sat and stared at it for a while, working out all the dimensions in my head - then a bliding light !!!. You have to cock the trigger to get it back in and I had forgotten to unset it, a click of the trigger and the rifle cocked fine ! What a numpty ! I haven't chrono'd it yet, I'll see what it's doing in the morning. I didn't
