  1. Well done Mark i know of a similar story but on the hill. It seems to be a good year round here plenty foxes & last night when i walked the dogs there was a pair calling to each other. The night i was out at the geese in the moonlight i could hear 3 diffrent dog foxes round me & a vixen.
  2. Hi here is a couple pic's from moonlight flights at the geese that were hitting a wheat field. We had 3 on monday & 2 on tuesday for a couple hours each night. We could have stayed all night as the farmer had to put the tractor out into the field for the night on monday when we left . Here is my 11yrs old lab dog with monday nights bag Tuesday night with another of my labs. .
  3. Hi with a 1-12 twist stick to 50-55g bullets & as for scopes as you might end up stalking etc with it go with the S&B/swarovski or zeiss nothing else dose it for me & iv used & looked down loads of scopes & rifles. I wouldent look at any other scopes & work a S&B on the 22.250 & a swarovski on the 25cal.
  4. Hi i like to pick my emptys but out the auto its a bit hard but i look for them or look another day in the light.
  5. Hi Dave hows tricks? is your bitch lined yet or at her next season. My reason for asking is if she has been lined i think you have your time scale of pups wrong mate all the best.
  6. More common is the binelli 8 shot but beretta do them Fabaem arm do a 6 & 8 shot. I would look at a beretta/binelli route as you only get one chance to get it right with a section 1 shotgun & both these are very good reliable auto's. To be honest you wouldent need more than an 8 shot as you do get 12 shot auto's.
  7. Best & easy way for most with little experiance is to cut the throat from ear to ear on the under side at the back of the lower jaw but be care full for the blood. This is quick & humane as the back of the head is a small area to get right for non experiance persons with deer. The beast needs bled any way ASAP after death & this is doing two things at once ie killing the beast & bleeding it at same time & be very care full of roe with there feet/hoofs & dont approach from behind as they will kick out if they can & seriously hurt you.
  8. Hi i had a day on my ground on the 2nd & got a pair through the day. Went out with my brother at night as i have see near 20 on an evening stalk fly by me so we tryed an evenig at the on the 2nd seen 5 my bro missed twice & i got 1 so 3 for 3 shots for my day.
  9. Hi sorry but in our area & other parts of scotland expanding bullet heads go on your ticket. The .224 heads ie 222/223/22.250/220swift etc come in 100 heads at a time so you need to be able to purchase/acquire 100 at one time & posses 120-160 etc at one time. Some of the bigger cals come in 50 heads at a time so you must have this condition on your ticket to buy the set amount at one time on your ticket but im ok i can get 200 heads to buy & keep 300 for my 25/06 & 22.250.
  10. Only expanding ammo goes on your ticket, you can buy non expanding ammo mail order. but you cant use non expanding ammo on life animals. We have to put expanding ammo on our tickets & as said powder & primmers go into a log book. You can use match ammo on vermin ie A-MAX or a matchgrade HP not sure on the FMJ.
  11. We have loads here & on any evening stalk at roe i see 5-20 birds flight by. An estate had 52 in 2 days with guns i know & i see/flush 5-10 a day when beating. I myself have not shot any this year yet but i love woodcock shooting had 4 in 1 drive last year.
  12. Hi i dont know much on breeding cocker but if you drop a line with some of the top lads ie Simon tyers etc they should be able to answer your questions. They will keep you right from eye tests etc to stud dogs.
  13. Hello im an X-keeper & used to have a 243 & have had the better half of near 1000 deer to my name but not sika might i add. The 243 is a great cal & all 4-5 stalkers on an estate i helped used the cal to kill 150 stags a year & 500-600 hinds a year & god knows how many roe & 90% of it done with a 243. The 243 is a good rifle with good accuracy & choice of bullets in factory or homeload & is more than able & i bet there is more deer/vermin taken with this cal than any other in britian. I personally fancied a wee change as i had the 243 for7yrs or so & tho
  14. An FAC shotgun is ilegal on any thing other than vermin & pest ie crows/pigeon/rabbit etc.
  15. ditto everything drummuir has said. your stud dog needs to be hip scoredand eye tested. youd have to be crazy to breed without a good hip score/eye test. Do you really Farlap? Out of curiosity would you hip score a 3 yr old Lab which has worked say 2 times or three times week ?Personally I think its a bit late to hip score but eye test yes.. As my vet says if a dog has good hips it will have good hips for life, and the same score roughly at 3 years as it would have had at 12mths, ie they stay sound. I personally if looking to mate a lab bitch would not use a dog unless it had
  16. Not sure on reds but for roe my mate was getting £2.80kg if you take them to them or £2.20-£2.40kg picked up which is quite good. I have seen wild roe venison £60kg for saddle to buy at its most but mainlly £18-£30 per kg of saddle fillet on sites a total rip off as we dont get that for a whole beast. I keep about 20-30 a year & process them with my bro into burgers/mince/sausages/stew etc & keep saddle for steak.
  17. Theres no real right/wrong answer to this as any good working dog will hunt/flush/retrieve. Ok field trials are totally diffrent & a lab aint allowed to hunt but they can iv got 3 that do very well & another that did but dead R.I.P heather. I also have a cocker & is very good in thick bramble tight hag piles etc where my labs are to big to get into. As for pups ie picking 1 well its a whole new ball game as they can change so much pending your influence on the pup & so hard to pick thats how field triallers can go through so many no ill to the dog & a good dog but just not
  18. A keepers day i take it?. Great fun those grouse try scotland where they fall onto you quickly. Could do with a keepers day at grouse myself again or win the lotto.
  19. I love the woodcock shooting & aim to get at least 1 for my season. There is a few just come in this week saw a few today beating so it must be the start of them. Here is a pic of 3 i got in 1 drive last year at end of season but still no right & left yet. .
