Hi as has been said get stuff sorted the night before. Just relax & enjoy its the stalkers job to think & plan & an experianced stalker will keep you sorted to enjoy the day whether you pay or not. You should get a shot at a target & guided through it all as if its the real thing so when it happens you just do the drill you did at the target. This is where experiance comes in & can make or break a day & i take it you are at the roe. He should be able to tell stuff about the area bucks/stags they have seen & why they want that lad so relax & enjoy & let us kn

Great read FD & i know the feeling as i leave beasts to come on. I had a buck i seen & it took 3yrs to get him i personally never tryed him as i wanted my brother or friend to shoot it. Remmy ( our dave ) even tryed for him when he was up & he gave us the slip but my brother got him with a long shot 230m some night & i bet he was 11yrs + but he was an old friend sad to see him go.
-
Nice one Dave a good looking clean head the beast has my mate up north has seen alot of good bucks with him so it looks to be a good year for them. We just need a bit warmmer weather to dry up the vevet on some to staet to shed it.

Hi Mark good one i had a mate out & got a young cull buck in velvet. A 22.250 is the same bullet diamiter but a bigger case & is a far better/superiour round IMHO to the 223 But the 223 has plenty ammo options in factory round due to its military back ground as it is a 5.56nato or 223 to us hunters etc.
-
The remmy is a fantastic rifle with plenty after market things you can do to improve/customize years down the line. As standard they are accurate & good value & the stuff you can do with/too them is unreal. Iv had my 22.250 5-6yrs & my mate loved it so bought an SPS s/syn in 25/06 he put a jewell trigger on it O MY GOD its good & i got him an HS-stock with varmint profile & its a weapon.
-
Hi yes its a good round with plenty of versitality to homeload with it being a 30cal ie 308 in a long case. best check your local rfd for regularity of ammo etc but if you homeload the choice is endless.

There are many trialling dogs out there that would cover your needs & these dogs are hip/eye tested etc.

Hi water entry is as said a confidence thing & how it was introduced. as for dogs like lewismac1's dog that is great to see but water can hide many dangours to a dog just under the water & should be given respect. Nice vid lewismac1 & my dog do much the same but some times it worries me when they do it on the rivers with rocks etc but mine calmed down with age too as they learn & get older. Young dogs can be fun when trainning especially when you get a good young dog blod/strong & confident & trusting in you.

Hi i got a cocker dog two & a bit years ago. I found the cocker more timmid but mental & found it was more a case of very repetative work to wear them down & get the measage. Iv got 3 labs had 4 bred them all apart from my first bitch & found them very easy compared to cocker as he was more fun/challenge to train & i gave up on heel work with him. I started working him at 14/15 months old & very little probs even i thick cover & just finished our 2nd season with him & he is a joy to work/drive in the beating line & puts many others to shame. My only hate is

Elaine Murray MSP comments on Deer stalking
v-max replied to tom1cameron's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Good on you Tom get into her the narrow minded opinions of people that bleet & know nowt amaze me deer welfare is a serious mater & deer can cause serious harm to them selves & habitat round them if left unmannaged & then there would be disgust on that area with sick/thin deer dying every where. -
Hi ss dont know if you know this but reduce your max load by 1-2g when you use match primmers as they burn hotter thus more pressure & most data is with standard primmers unless stated.
-
thought you could in scotland. You can dunc & it aint a compulsory law to have DMQ to shoot deer just the permission as i stated & you need a 50g bullet minimum with 1700 or 1750ftb to shoot roe cant remember exactly but sure i will be corrected. I do know it is 5og bullet & up in the .224 cal.
-
Hi it is not compulsory to have any thing other than the proof from land owner or sporting rights holder of your land to shoot deer. Get it in writing to keep your self right & dont let police tell you that you need DMQ1 or that but it wouldent be a bad idea to look into doing it. Try get out with some one with real good knowledge not the self taught type either that think they know as you are only as good as your mentor & will learn nowt at end of the day.

There is a reason to hang meat wether young or old & its best to let the moisture out which tenders the meat too. Yes a young beast is tender but best hung skinned for 4-7 days & dont need as much as a young beast.

Well done & as for does having fully growen calfs inside them at this time of year is s**t this shows there knowledge of deer & managment. The real front & face of deer management at a high level is not for the soft stalker thinking he/she shooting a couple deer in summer thinking there doing deer management. My only thing is i see some of those deer very gassed up which is not good but by the sounds of it englands fallow need a good going over & culling in areas.
-
Well bro thats your kinda stalking as you could take that fae the window yah lazzy git .
-
Hi but a JR aint no retriever but they will but when you get him into rats he will have to learn quick to kill ASAP or get badly bitten by the rat. It will come naturally to kill/shake & look for the next target as they go mad for it & you normally get a few rats together.
-
Well dave im surprized the stud aint had vet bills with a knot like that to him it is a third leg. God it makes my eyes water as my brothers ESS was the same & i said it would cost him money its no the kinda thing you want hanging when working.

Roe stalk yesterday morning in snowy Scottish Borders
v-max replied to von's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Hi & well done von you seem to have one stuck up on a fence all bled too. As said by Mj Robson about the doe keeping the big fella about but then you play the numbers game & deer management/welfare etc & its a diffrent ball game. I dont mean this in any disrospect to Mark & others & it aint at you but its that attachude with deer that has led to such problems as with englands fallow herds. I do the same at this time of year if i see a big buck with doe but early on i shoot on site. -
Hi dont use brasso as it weakens case's & those ultrasonic cleaners are good but take work to me. I have went back to the tumbler & media so simple & basic.
-
Hi Tom cant beleave your 30 happy b-day. Did you have a hard paper round? as beleave it or not im older than you . I had an olt but lost a bit of it & it was good but now work a scotch call & i works well for me.

Hi whats the estate my mate is headkeeper/stalker out in glen lyon. I aint got down this year to the hinds but iv shot plenty before. Pending weather it could be cold but the excitment should keep it at bay but you get some cold days more with the wind chill factor. It's in a place like that you see the sense of say a swazi jacket/trousers/meindl boots etc. You should try doing the fox dens oot the highlands

What is the most humane way of killing a deer?
v-max replied to Lennard's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
the best way to do it is to cut the throat from ear to ear on the underside of the head and then grab the head one hand on the animals nose one hand on the back of the head! then push the hand down that you have on the back of the head and pull up with the other then the neck will break and cause instant death to the animal!! this is the best way trust me!!! after all i am a licenced slaughterman!!! As i have said & dont want to get all high & mighty but a slaughter-house is diffrent from a road side. Iv got a hell of experiance with deer & to keep it simple for others with le -
Thats a good price for the light-force but i work the cluson vehicle mount with great success & can highly recomend it at £50-£60 & it come's with the extention handle for cluson lites.
