The shoot owners sister lives on the estate and her kids keep a few fancy chickens, some peking bantams and silkies and some other weird looking things . She rang me up about a fortnight ago saying she had a fox bothering the birds and would I have a look around. Sure I said and sat out a few evenings but saw nothing then it had one of her fowl . So I stepped up my game and tried the electric fox caller with a few different distress calls ....again nothing . It took another bird and again I sat out three evenings on the trot well into darkness and using the thermal , and saw nothing. I have be

Rabbit numbers
shovel leaner replied to Dave_4's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
A thermal imaging spotter will give you the best means of determining rabbit numbers . I’ve been sitting out for a fox the last few evenings and the paddocks I’ve been sitting in have a good few in . I’ve counted the rabbits every evening in the three paddocks I could see from my vantage point and every evening it’s been roughly the same amount , so I guess it’s an accurate way of counting what you have . My advice is leave them be for the moment, if you have seen only one you don’t have a harvestable surplus yet . Wait to see what you have late summer . -
Thing is , even though hare coursing has been banned, it doesn’t stop hundreds of people from pulling into fields and tipping a long dog out . Same with fox hunting. How many people actually end up in court facing charges for coursing. And even when found guilty , penalty’s are laughable. Someone has to enforce laws . The police are facing huge cutbacks , I think monitoring hunters activity’s will come way down the list . Watch this general license fiasco play out ..... we will be back in business soon enough, one way or another. I’ve been living my life doing what I do for too long to change

My god , everyone is so full of doom and gloom. We seem to forget that as hunters we live in the most unregulated and free country’s in the world . In America you have to have a license to shoot stuff and woe betide anyone who transgresses because you have teams of rangers enforcing the law .On the continent you have to take exams to go out hunting, we don’t. They banned hunting but guess what ? Hunting is as popular if not more popular than before the ban . This general license will sort itself out soon . The shooting industry generates millions for the rural economy, banning it makes no sen

My daughter went there with some friends not long ago . I gave her a fatherly lecture before she left and suggested a visit to Anne Franks house and a canal trip and maybe a visit to the Van loon museum. Upon her return I asked her about her trip , “did you visit any of the places I suggested “? “No” . “Well what did you do “? I wish I hadn’t asked , she’s not smoking that shit under my roof .

At the time of the marches for “ Liberty and livelihoods “ I would say that most of the country sports community got behind it . I traveled to London on a coach that had been paid for by a local shoot . And I stood alongside beaters pickers up , Lurcher and terrier lads , clay shooters and ferret fanciers . We were united. Didn’t do much good though , there were half a million of us and it got hardly any coverage in the news in spite of being the biggest public demonstration in history . The handful of antis that turned out got more publicity. We know the BBC agenda , we know the media is run

The big names I remember were Kendo Nagasaki, Mick McManners , Jackie Pallow , Giant Haystacks, and of course none of it was rehearsed, it was the real deal ? My NaN lived with us when I was w kid and she was mad for the wrestling, she used to get out of her chair and wave her walking stick at the telly , she hated Mick McManners

My Mrs came from a big Irish family and had it tough as a kid , not much money about and all that . They rented a telly “ Grundig” was the company name . 50p in the back , it was black and white , her mum was a “Crossroads” fan and made her run down the street to look through a neighbors window who had a colour set , to see what colour dress Meg Richardson was wearing. How times have changed.

Guys doing the cull use peanuts , not KP or the salted varieties, just the kind you put out for birds in the garden . You say you have been trying for a week ? Not maybe long enough. Think about where you want to photograph them and it doesn’t have to be on top of the sett , then leave the peanuts out for them there they go mad for them.....apparently . The trick is to poke them in the ground, they then have to dig them up which gives you time , it also stops birds from eating them . Apparently pheasants love them too . So bait the area until you see the claw marks and signs that they have fou

Nice looking little bitch , reminds me of my first decent terrier Amy . She was a cracker and I was keen to show her . Problem was she had one ear that was pricked up . I tried everything to get it to flop over , I even put a peg on it , and it seemed to work, I entered the ring and they were both down and I was feeling confident, then as I was walking around she started to trot a bit and I looked down and it was stood up . I just walked out and gave up any hope of showing her . But where it really mattered she was first class and probably as good a terrier as I’ve had , and because I was so k

One of my beaters announced his retirement this year . He has been beating on the shoot for over 50 years and was part of the furniture. Sadly a recurring problem with his leg meant he could no longer get about as he would like . I offered to give him easy jobs , like the game cart or just go on stop , but he said if he couldn’t put in a proper days beating he wouldn’t be coming. We all think a lot of him , his sense of humour and wisdom will be missed by beaters and the guns. I had a word with my mate Norman who makes sticks and asked him for a Duck head stick as the old beater was a keen wil

General license for bird control revoked
shovel leaner replied to Dave_4's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It doesn’t come in till Thursday. So I for one am going shooting Tomorrow. -
I’ve never been that ruthless myself either. Though I know some who have not tolerated any sign of weakness or have displayed traits they consider undesirable. I have a dog now who would not have lasted five minutes with some , but I liked the dog and he did have some good points , I gave him time and although not a world beater he always puts a shift in . Like others have said , give it the summer off and try next season.

Maybe Charlie got out or bolted and you and your mate didn’t see it . No terrier that believes the fox has bolted would be keen to go back to ground . I’ve seen foxes peeping then creeping out . The fact is you don’t know 100% so don’t give up yet . As a rule of thumb I was told 3 strikes and they are out .
-
He had a shaky start , and I thought he wouldn’t make it , three fails and they are out . And he has had more than that . But he has other good points . He has settled down to be a reliable dog , he has succeeded in some deep and difficult spots . I’m glad I didn’t act too quickly. The little smooth coat has been excellent so far , hardly a mark on her and yet you break through and she is near enough to lick Charlie.

My two Russell's , the dog was keeper bred and I was given him by a lad who used it for bushing , he said “I can’t put up with him anymore, he keeps going to ground “ , “that’s a shame” I said , “ I’ll take him off your hands “ . And to be fair he’s been spot on , also done a bit of hunt service when the terrierman was short . The small bitch has been spot on , bred by DB .

Last nights foxing
shovel leaner replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
No , it’s a permanent set up . He has bait stations all around the outside . I see the odd one running up the ditch with the thermal . It’s a very clean and tidy egg unit . The guy is meticulous. -

Nice write up FD , I went over to the chicken farm I look after today to get some “free” eggs , the Mrs wants to make some cakes for Easter. The farmer hasn’t seen anything and doesn’t think he’s losing any birds . So I had a walk around the fence line and in particular the little gaps that the foxes push through, and found a fresh kill . I’ve killed countless foxes on this farm , but it’s like a honey pot for foxes . I will be out soon . -
That looks top drawer mate , unlike Arry I’d happily polish the lot off kidneys and all . In fact one of my favourite breakfasts is kidneys on toast, with maybe a poached really fresh free range egg . When I gralloch a deer the first thing I take is the kidneys. Peel the membrane off , cut in half , dip in seasoned flour and into a hot frying pan . I like mine still pink , with a bit of blood dripping on my toast . I’m feeling hungry now , where’s my rifle ?

The Mrs has got a BMW320d does about 50 to the gallon on a run drives lovely and fairly quick , not much room in the back . The 520 is bigger , but the next one we get is going to be the Mercedes c class , I think they are some motor , can’t afford a new one but then I’ve never bought anew car in my life .
