  1. Because some people prefer Collie types and others Saluki, its nice to have a choice and not be prejudiced by what may better suit another. For my tuppence worth the addition of Border is paramount in my dogs, the addition of Deerhound and Greyhound,if balanced out, meets all my requirements now,i do miss my Saluki/Greyhounds,but they no longer meet my needs.
  2. That possibly came from the Greyhound side of the breeding, whilst a working Border,s feet are nearly second to none, the Saluki runs it very close. yes i am talking about 3/4 grey 1/4 collie on preban hares as opposed to saluki/grey /collie/lurcher. 3/4 greyhound. im not trying to say a saluki has better feet than a collie. I would,nt like to say that the Saluki as better feet than a Border, mind you,i would,nt like to say a Border as better feet than a Saluki. Both breeds probably have had the biggest influence on lurchers and have added more to the mix than any other, two worthy additions to a

  4. It possibly does, but a Saluki adds to a coursing dog and whilst im no fan of bull crosses, good ones will take some beating at their chosen sport, each to their own preference.
  5. With the mileage you put in to pick up that youngster, its a real pleasure to see it paid off for you, well done.
  6. My take on an allrounder,a dog capable of coming to terms with edible ground game including feather, day or night.Must be able to hunt up,find and mark.If you need to take a gun,get a gun dog and anybody longnetting does.nt need a lurcher, just a dog that won,t arouse unwanted attention,a little mongrel capable of pushing bunny,s back to the net.A dog that can account for Charlie is an added asset, but not crucial to an allrounder,if you need a drawing dog,get another terrier.By the time your dog becomes an accomplished allrounder,it will be nearly old enough to retire, its then time to start agai
  7. A lot of owners train their dogs during the day only, recall, retrieve, jumping etc.If you want the dog for lamping you will be better prepared if you also undertake the same training in the dark. The dog is more confident and less inquisitive, you will still get the dog hunting lost runs, but the more runs it gets the sooner it will learn to return,to run again.
  8. Forget the books, you seem to be doing all right without them.If you happen to be walking about at Hawksworth golf course[just over the hill from you]at last light, the dog may get a run or 2.
  9. Lord Lucan,he,s a bit secretive about it though.
  10. chuck her in a cage full of rats , that will bring her on abit more. i hate lap dogs , most lap dogs havent had the stuff put in front of them Why settle for a cage of rats?,surely a cage of really nasty Gerbils would help the dog along more?.

    hard choice

Youve got a job,you want to keep the mutt, let go of the apron strings and fly the nest, problem solved for you,the dog and your mummy.
  12. I think if your mate found himself some more experienced and loyal hunting partners, the dog may blossom.
  13. Just because a dog comes on heat does,nt mean it has to be bred from. You own a 3/4 whippet-1/4 beddy and you want to know what cross would be fast and agile?,spend some time with your dog in the field, you may both learn from the experience.
  14. The pup will love to play with the bunny,s,it will learn it a lot more than retrieving balls, soft toys etc.As you are in a garden you will have full control of the situation, make sure the dog learns that the bunnys belong to you and not them,as soon as the dog starts to chew into them, take them away, reinforce the ownership part of the training,it will all pay dividends when the pup eventually starts to catch.
  15. you cant put a ribbon in a stew mate. There is no F in stew.
  16. No mate as I'm breeding beddy x greys, but if he wants 1 when I breed my bitch then he can have 1, the price of fuel will cover the cost of a pup as I'm from north east england That's a very kind offer indeed and thank you very much.If they were beddy whippet x i'd have taken you arm off for one. It's taken me years to talk the missus round to getting a dog and that is what she has set her heart on, Thanks Again Andrew Take the offer, tell the missus its a Beddy/whippet,Beddy/Grey better option.
  17. I think its to give the owners a chance of getting a ribbon, because if they had to compete on a level playing field, with the other types, except the whippety,s,they would leave the ring empty handed.
  18. I know a lad with Collie bred lurchers, non Hancock. The lad keeps a low profile and quietly go,s about his business always under the radar,he,s not one for big bags or self publicity, thats possibly the reason the last litter he bred nearly all ended up in pet homes because when they were advertised he got very little take up on them. These dogs have generations of breeding and work in them,as good as and better than some better known bred dogs.Maybe there is a market for decent bred types, this lad failed to find them.
  19. People are paying silly money for crap now,in an ideal world people would take their time,do some detective work, view the parents at work, look at more than one litter, make sure they have the time and resources to take a pup on and then buy a mutt. But human nature being what it is,people buy on impulse and peer worship,a bit of poetic licence from the vendor is all it takes to lure in the unsuspecting fool and his hard earned dosh.
  20. If they were all £250/300,every numpty with a bitch would be shelling out pups to jump on the gravy train.
  21. Compared to the price of some of the coursing pups, they seem relatively cheap,in reality a pup will only sell for what somebody is happy to pay.Id be embarrased to have to pay those prices when with a bit of time and research i could possibly buy a superior animal for a lesser and more reasonable amount.
  22. Two of the best fox killing dogs ive seen,1 of them i had the fortune to own, happened to be ex track dogs, the dog took a while to come to terms with its fieldcraft,if it had been started from a pup it most likely would have fared better, excellent feet, adequate coat, could spot a runner at great distance, biddable and a real asset to the team. The dog did lack stamina. With all his good points i covered a Lurcher with him,the pups bar none all made the grade and with the cross the stamina issue was eradicated.I prefer lurcher to lurcher breeding, but, after a few generations the infusion of the right
  23. If your struggling to source a lurcher over there, why not start a line from scratch, yes you will need to source a decent type Greyhound as a base line, your chosen quarry and terrain will have a bigger bearing on the cross you use, than anything else.Only when there are other suitable dogs at your disposal, will you have the luxury of Crossing lurcher to lurcher to further the lineage, until then the Greyhound,as it always as done, will play an important part in the development of the lurcher.
  24. I personally would,nt use a pure Saluki as a base line for breeding a dog that is wanted for lamping,i don,t mind the idea of Saluki blood in the mix,but there are better options out there that would be better suited to the job.Id source a pup bred from tried and tested lampers, start off with a pup that will meet its potential rather than breed just for the sake of it.
  25. There used to be a few round S.Yorks,im sure a couple of them are still on the go.
